Frozen Stiff Page 29

“We’ll do it,” Glory spoke up, and Enten’s chest filled with pride. Damn straight they would help the king. They had the rest of eternity to get physical with each other, and now knowing the closeness of a god and his Chosen, Enten felt the king’s pain at Ereshkigal’s absence as if it were his own. He nodded to the king.

“I thank you both,” Nergal replied, and immediately went back to planning. He exhibited a new eagerness to get on with things now they had information and a plan. But his brow furrowed. “Once I am able to speak to my queen, and track them, we’ll still be unable to get close. Beletseri will feel our presence the minute we are anywhere near.” He looked over at his glowie Champions. “The same goes for you. You all have a highly detectable god-like energy.” His face twisted with frustration.

“She can’t sense me.” Huxley, who had remained in the shadows, stepped forward. “I’m human, and indistinguishable from the other seven billion people on the planet.” He planted himself squarely in front of the king. “Use me. I can do this.”

The king’s head reeled. He looked at Huxley as if seeing him for the first time. “My gods. Now I know what she meant. Ereshkigal’s talk of the prophecy.” Nergal shook his head. “I don’t know whether to cheer or to weep.”

The king did neither. Instead, to Enten’s utter astonishment, he dropped to his knees before Huxley, bowing deeply to the floor. He uttered two very strange words, “My prince.”

  Epilogue

Ereshkigal was tied up again, this time with an osmium infused rope. She had almost succeeded in freeing herself during the last location switch, and cursed her luck that Nedu-the-useless had been fucking Beletseri instead of the more astute Matthew.

The queen wasn’t sure how, but Matthew had noticed that the magic collar, two of which existed, hung loosely on her neck; Ershkigal having worked the combination again and again during hours of darkness, lining them up correctly and finally succeeding. Nedu was such an incompetent that had it occurred on his watch, she would have misted out and been long gone by the time Beletseri had been notified. Not so, Matthew.

Now, with the osmium, she was bound hand and foot. This was not good, but Ereshkigal refused to give up. Surely one of these nights, during a necessary move, Nergal would be awake and hear her call. True, she had less than a minute to impart anything to him, but just to be able to hear his voice would lift her spirits immeasurably.

She wondered if he’d heeded her last words to him. They had been fairly cryptic, but if he thought on them long and hard, Ereshkigal had no doubt he’d figure it out. There was only one person who could save her now, and it had long since been preordained.

She wished she had seen the problem coming and had thought to set things in motion herself, but being a queen and a goddess did not necessarily mean she had such foresight.

Ereshkigal fought for a more comfortable position. Two more nights and she could try her husband again. It would take all she could do to keep a civil tongue in her head for the next two days as she was constantly mined by Beletseri for the strangest and most personal of information.

The queen sensed, however, that this was the reason Beletseri kept her alive, to glean all the small details of her life. And that, for Ereshkigal, had become the most important thing. Stay alive. Stay alive until help could come.
