Jakob came up beside me and caught my attention. “Are you almost ready, Doc?”
“Yeah, after I give him his fish tank, then I’ll announce the final surprise.”
Jakob nodded and winked at me as he walked over to Sam to take care of the mess Sam had already made out of himself. As far as I could see from here, he already had cake in his hair, and there was frosting on his cheek.
Shortly after we served the cake, Josh started to open his presents. He was blown away by what he got from his friends and family. And I had to admit the gifts were amazing. There were lots of stuffies and toys, and even a Lego set from Ray. Josh declared every present to be the bestest ever, and I watched him with a smile, knowing very well that the best was yet to come. As he finished up, I gave Jakob a nod, and he went to the kitchen while I walked over to Josh and the table full of presents.
“I believe my gift is still missing, Baby.” I motioned for Jakob to bring in the fish tank. We’d kept it in the kitchen to avoid that someone accidentally knocked it over. It was empty, but it was still glass. Instead of a real fish, though, there was a picture of a clownfish inside. “Josh, you can now be a real fishie daddy.”
Josh squealed and clapped his hands. “Really? I get a real fish? I’ll be a fish daddy?”
“Yes, Baby. A real fish. Just for you. We’ll go to the pet store tomorrow, and then you can choose one.”
“Woohoo.” He jumped up and cheered, then ran to me and gave me a huge hug. Before I could even respond, he turned around and grinned at Sam. “I’m going to be a fish daddy!”
“That’s so cool! I’ll bring Tate to visit your fishies!”
I cleared my throat to get Josh's attention before they got lost in planning playdates between Tate and the fish. Blinking, Josh turned and looked at me again.
“That’s not all.”
“It’s not? Wow, talk about the best birthday ever.”
“Josh, please forgive me.” His eyes got big, and I saw tears gather in them.
“W-What do you mean?”
“Oh, no! No, sweetpea. It’s not bad.” I hugged him and held him close to my chest for a moment and drew strength from his warmth. Then I pulled back and took a deep breath. “What I meant was, please forgive me. I should have done this a long time ago.” Glancing at my Mom, who nodded with a huge smile, I pulled a box out of my pocket and dropped down to one knee in front of him.
“My sweet Josh. We always say that we love each other to infinity, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that you are my heart and my soul. You’re my everything, Josh. You’re my partner, my best friend, my Baby Boy. You’re my whole life, and I don’t want to spend a single day without you.” Taking a deep breath, I opened the lid and presented the ring. “Will you do me the honor of becoming my husband?”
There were gasps and awws from around to room, but I only had eyes for my Josh, holding my breath while I waited for his reaction. At first, he didn’t react at all, and then he shocked the hell out of me when he threw his head back and laughed. Ok, that was not the reaction I was expecting. Before I could start to panic, Josh knelt in front of me.
“Oh, Daddy. I was wondering how I was going to pull this off. I almost gave myself a heart attack when I thought about doing this because I was so scared that you’d say no.” Then Josh pulled a box out of this pocket, opened it, and winked. “I don’t have such a beautiful speech, so I’ll make it short. I’ll be yours if you’ll be mine.”
I glanced down at the box in his hand and blinked at the ring. The ring was almost identical to what I had chosen for him. Platinum, with the infinity symbol, etched into it. Now it was me who laughed out loud.
“Oh, my sweet Boy.”
“I love you, Daddy. Will you be mine forever?”
“I love you, too, Josh. Of course, I will.”
He pulled his ring out of the box, and I did the same with mine. We exchanged rings kneeling on the Rainbow Room floor, and it could not have been more perfect.
