“Ah, you made it,” one of them spoke up. It was an older man with graying hair. He wore casual clothes, but his eyes spoke of authority. He stood in the center of the group with his hands in his pockets. The man holding Elina walked forward with her, stopping in front of this new face. The older man gazed down at Elina with particular malignance.
“Thanks to you, my men have been in a frenzy,” he began. “Do you have any idea what your article will do to my people?”
“First of all,” Elina began, feeling angered, “I don’t have any idea because I don’t even know who you guys are. I don’t know about whatever this article is, and I don’t even know who you are.”
He frowned, deepening the lines across his face. “Your little game of playing stupid won’t get you far, girl.”
“I’m not playing--!”
“Tell us the location of your client,” the older man ordered.
“I don’t have a client. I’m an online program tester named Elina Childs. I’m Carla’s sister,” Elina responded sharply.
He paused in confusion.
“Look, I don’t know what my sister’s gotten into. I know absolutely nothing. All I know is that some crazy man came into my apartment last night and tried to kill me.”
He studied her for a few moments. “I don’t believe you.”
“My name is Elina Rose Ann Childs. I test software to pinpoint program bugs. I don’t know anything about journalism. The only papers I ever wrote were technical reports.”
He was silent, a finger to his lips. Another Soldier a few feet away spoke up.
“This can’t be, Max. We were careful. We had the correct address!”
“No you didn’t,” Elina retorted. “That was my address.”
“So then what do we do with her?” asked the kidnapper.
“Well, she can’t just leave,” the one named Max answered. “This girl, whether she is Carla Childs or not, has seen too much. We have no option but to do away with her.”
“What do you mean ‘do away’?” Elina exclaimed.
Max eyed her coldly. “I think you know very well what it means.”
For a brief moment, Elina noticed the gleam of a silver zipper reflecting the light of one of the dim lamps. She turned her head just a little to spot Alec in his bike clothes skirting around one of the large machines. Her kidnapper behind her hadn’t seemed to see the same thing she had, but she kept quiet and pretended not to notice. Whatever Alec was doing, she didn’t want to mess it up by drawing attention to him.
“Take her to the back and dispose of her,” Max ordered.
The kidnapper jerked at Elina, leading her away from Max, but a sudden shout from behind the group turned everyone’s eyes back to their gang leader.
Alec stood with his arm hooked around Max’s neck in a headlock, his handgun jammed partway under the leader’s jaw. Alec’s eyes blazed, no longer the cool sea spray look he’d given Elina so many times before.
“Let go of Elina,” he ordered. “Let go of her, or I’ll kill Max.”
Elina’s kidnapper laughed. “You couldn’t possibly be serious, Alec.”
Alec jabbed the muzzle harder against Max who grunted in discomfort. “I am serious! The Blue Soldiers have gone too far. Who cares about a little publicity? This wasn’t our code when I joined.”
“Whatever Max says is what we do, Alec. You know that. You’ve done this sort of thing before.”
“I’ve never been this persistent about killing someone. Not until now. And I’ll do what I have to,” Alec threatened.
A click of another gun sounded from off to Elina’s right, and Alec was swift, catching the sound as well. He jerked Max to the side before the gun went off, and Max shouted in alarm.
“Tray! You idiot! You shot Max!” an unknown face exclaimed.
Amidst the confusion, Alec let go of Max to let him drop to the floor, and the entire team of members threw themselves at each other. Even Elina’s kidnapper was lost in the sudden scramble. Two of the members ran to Max’s side while the others threw punches and furious kicks at the one named Tray. Tray was sided with a few others who fought back. Elina was knocked into and shoved around among the chaos. Fearing she’d be thrown to the ground and trampled if she didn’t do something, Elina threw her own weight into several of the Soldiers, pushing them out of her way. A couple of the men swiped for her, but she countered by biting one of their arms and throwing a kick at another.
“Elina!”
Elina whipped around to see Alec just as he grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the exit. She stumbled over her own shoes, trying to keep up.
Alec shut the door to the hideout, muffling the outraged noises from inside, and led Elina to his bike. He helped her on and then rode back onto the roads.
“What if they follow us?” Elina wondered as she wrapped her arms tightly around him.
“They won’t,” he replied. “I know them. They can’t function without Max, which is why I used him to my advantage.”
Elina pressed her face to his jacket and closed her eyes. “What are we going to do now, Alec?”
Alec was quiet as he made his way out of town. Elina only hoped that she could put her trust in him yet again, and she felt that it was the right choice to do so. Lacing her fingers together around his middle, Elina held on tightly and left the decisions up to Alec.
4| Vacation
Elina’s phone buzzed on the bedside table. Alec had retrieved what he could from her apartment over the last couple of days, but he’d told her that they wouldn’t go back to the town from anymore. It was much too dangerous.
Elina stepped across the hotel suite and picked the phone up to check the number.
“It’s my sister,” she said as Alec looked over her shoulder to read the numbers.
“Just be careful,” he advised. “You never know what tricks they’ll try to pull to track you down.”
Swallowing, Elina answered the call and placed it to her ear. “Hello?”
“Elina? Is that you?”
Elina couldn’t feel happier to hear her sister on the other line.
“Carla! How are you? Are you okay?”
Carla’s voice was cheerful. “I’m just fine. My client told me everything that happened. I got so scared for you. I’m so sorry that I mixed you up in all this.”
“It wasn’t you,” said Elina. “If the Soldiers hadn’t gotten us confused, you could have been in my place.”
Alec sat down on the bed listening. He clutched a forest green strip of fabric in his hands.
“Are you safe?” Carla asked. “My client got me out of the country. He said the Soldiers would do anything to follow, so it was the safest option.”
“We’re okay,” answered Elina.
“‘We?’“
She looked at Alec. “Well, yes. One of them ended up on my side about the whole thing, and he even saved my life.”
“I’m glad to hear that you’re alright. Why not do what we’ve done and get out of the states? Even if you’ve escaped them, they’re relentless.”
“I’m sure we’ll get out of here soon and find safety. It was really good to hear your voice, Carla. Stay safe, okay?”
“Will do. And same for you.”
After Elina had hung up, she looked back at Alec. He was in the process of stringing the piece of fabric out and wrapping it around his hands tightly. He unraveled it and then repeated.
“My sister says we should leave the country,” said Elina.
“Smart decision,” he uttered. “The Blue Soldiers won’t try anything with Max down for a while, but there’s no guarantee that we’re safe. For now, though...” He looked up through his lashes at her, and Elina bit her lip at the fluttering sensation that enveloped her stomach. Alec stood from the bed and let the fabric dangle from his hands. As it unfolded, she realized it was a nightgown.
“What are you...?”
Alec snatched her hand and pulled her closer to him, smiling just a little. “How’s you
r shoulder today?”
“I barely feel it.” Her eyes couldn’t leave his as he stared deeply at her.
“That’s good.” His hands found the hem of her shirt, and he lifted it up and over her head, tossing it to the mattress. “Put this on.” He handed the gown to her and then turned his sights to the other side of the room so she could dress.
Elina frowned as she unhooked her bra and dropped it to the floor. “Why are you looking away? You’ve seen me naked already.”
“I don’t want to ruin the anticipation for myself,” he answered softly as Elina slipped the gown over her head. It clung to her breasts, but was open and airy near the bottom.
“I’m finished.”
Alec looked back, his eyes immediately moving to admire her defined nipples through the thin fabric. His fingers found her pants underneath the gown, and he unfastened them and inched them down her hips until she could kick them off.
“Are we going to do this at every hotel we stay in, Alec?” Elina asked. Over the last couple of days, they’d stayed at a different hotel room every night just in case there was anyone who’d decided to follow them.
“I like the idea of turning it into a ritual,” said Alec with a smirk.
Elina ran her hands over his firm chest before helping to remove his own shirt. Alec’s smirk grew a little, and he grabbed her around the sides and tossed her to the bed. Elina yelped in delighted surprise as he climbed over top of her and kissed down her throat.
“What are you going to do to me tonight?” she whispered.
Alec looked at her face. “If I tell you, that spoils the fun, don’t you think?”
His lips moved to the thin fabric of the nightgown, and he brought one breast into his mouth, licking at it through her clothing. She felt her nipples stiffen from the attention, and the sensation only intensified as Alec took her wrists to hold them above her head, pinning her to the bed.
“Alec, that’s torture!” she exclaimed. Her body writhed involuntarily, and Alec pressed his hips down to hers to hold her in place.
“So squirmy,” he breathed as he lifted his head from her breasts. “I’m beginning to think that you want something more, Elina.” He removed one of his hands from her wrists to glide it down her body and rested it just lightly between her legs. “Could this be true?”
Elina panted with pulsing want as Alec lifted up her lingerie to tug down her panties. He pressed his middle finger to her soft folds and dabbed at her wetness. The touch of his finger sent electrifying want through her. Alec removed his hand to bring the finger to his lips. He sighed contentedly. “Here is my proof.”
Elina widened her eyes as she watched him taste her nectar, and then he tore off her panties with a snarl, tossing them across the room.
“I’m going to take you hard, Elina. You’re going to be completely mine tonight.”
Elina spread her legs for Alec, but he closed them and shook his head. “Oh, no, we’re not done yet. I’ll have you screaming my name before I’m even inside you.”
Elina sucked in a breath of shock as she watched him use his shirt to tie her ankles together. He repeated the process with her wrists, binding them with more apparel, and then flipped her over onto her front. Elina wriggled helplessly as Alec brought his hand down in a swift pat against her backside. Though the slap was light, it sounded loud in the small hotel room. He lifted her hips upward until she rested on her knees, and his light touches across her exposed skin caused her to whimper with expectation.
Elina heard him climb off the bed and circle around to come into her view. He still wore his pants, but he had his thumb hooked in the top, and with a deft swipe of his fingers, he popped the button from the hole, and the zipper skittered downward halfway from the force. Alec remained in front of her, slowly moving the zipper down the rest of the way. The bulge underneath his boxers became clearer, and Elina watched him slide his jeans down one hip.
As she watched him, she recalled just how astounding it was that she was in this state just after a little less than a week. Just a few days ago she’d told her mother that she didn’t want to fall in love, and now here she was with a man she still barely knew...falling in love with every movement he made. She felt as if she’d known him for much longer than reality claimed. Alec inched his jeans lower, and then moved to his boxers. Should she be grateful that the Blue Soldiers had brought them together like this? Elina wasn’t so sure that she would ever be comfortable with the thought of the crazy man attacking her in her apartment, or of Max standing before her demanding information she didn’t have. Alec, though...she would always be comfortable around him.
Finally, he pulled the stretchy band of his boxers over his manhood, exposing his proud, curving shaft. He stepped closer to Elina, allowing her to gaze at him in curious apprehension. She watched as he touched his fingers to the underside of his member, and he pressed his tip to her lips.
“I’ve tasted you, Elina. Now I want you to taste me.”
Elina opened her mouth slowly, and Alec slipped his rod between her teeth, moving to the back of her throat. Elina was afraid of choking, but Alec’s movements were easy and gentle, and so she closed her lips around his member and suckled him tenderly. He sighed again, only this time of pleasure, tangling his fingers into her hair to hold her in place while he softly pumped his hips. Elina twisted her wrists, wishing to touch his skin, but remembered that she was still bound. She could only remain in one state while working her lips over his flesh.
Some time later, Alec removed his shaft and climbed back onto the bed. He placed his hands to her hips, and his thickness touched her opening.
“Do you want this now, Elina? Are you ready to beg me?”
“Please, Alec. Give it to me,” Elina whimpered.
“I don’t think you want it badly enough.”
“Please! Alec, pierce me! Give it to me!” Elina tried again, her voice rising.
He chuckled, and his member slipped into her throbbing center. He slid easily in and out of her entrance, and made sure to pull completely out a few times, waiting for her to mewl for him before he penetrated her again. His thrusts came quicker and heavier with each pounding moment, and Elina cried in growing pleasure.
“Yes! Yes!”
Alec threw his weight into the thrusts, growling and gasping as he worked his shaft harder. Elina arched her back, pressing her hips against his in utter abandon, wailing his name. Several more chafing thrusts of Alec’s hips, and Elina had already hit her peak. She let a scream escape her lips as her body shuddered with orgasm, and at that moment she felt a warmth spread inside her cavity as Alec released his seed.
Not having realized she’d lifted herself up from the bed from the sensation, Elina dropped back to the mattress panting. Alec withdrew himself and then immediately untied her and pulled her into his arms. Elina turned around to bury her head in his chest.
“Let’s go to Italy,” said Alec after a couple of minutes.
She looked up at him.
“My family owns a vineyard there and there’s a beautiful house we can make our own. I didn’t tell you, but I have money, Elina, a lot of it. You won’t want for anything for the rest of your life.”
Elina smiled wanly. The revelation startled her, but she should have figured as he was paying for them to stay at a different hotel every night. Nice hotels. “Will be safe from the gang there?.”
Alec looked into her eyes, and at that moment every ounce of dark humor left her. Those misted eyes were full of seriousness and determination. “Elina...” Alec began. “Wherever we go, I will keep you safe.”
And at that moment, Elina knew that she could trust Alec with more than just her life. She could trust him with her love.

Sample:
Meredith Bentley stared into the beautiful colors on her computer screen. She idly chose a brightly colored piece of candy and watched as it switched places with its neighbor. It clicked as it locked into place and then vanished in a poof of animated magic and sing-song sound effects. She was leaning over awkwardly in her seat, resting her chin in her hand as she propped herself up with one elbow, her head cocked to one side in a disinterested gaze.
She only indulged in silly computer games like this when there wasn’t anything going on at work – which is to say, fairly often. Well, more often than she’d have liked, anyway. When things did get busy at work, she loved her job. Most of the time, though, she had to find ways to keep herself entertained.
Meredith’s boss was Gabriel Miles, a successful young entrepreneur who ran a number of local businesses, including a print shop, a custodial staffing agency, a small chain of dry cleaners and a lunch stand downtown across from the courthouse. As his executive assistant, Meredith sorted his mail and managed his calendar. She often responded to his email and made calls on his behalf, but when he wasn’t in the office, she usually didn’t have enough work to keep herself busy.
At first, she’d tried to occupy her time by organizing the small cache of office supplies she kept in a cabinet behind her desk, but that job was finished a bit too quickly. Then she’d discovered the label maker and labeled everything she could think of. Shelves in the broom closet were for Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, and Soap. There was Sugar and Creamer next to the Coffee Maker and Cups in the break room, Printer Paper on the shelf next to the printer, which Meredith decided not to label, and miniature bins for Paper Clips, Binder Clips and Thumbtacks. She had just made up her mind to label her Stapler when she ran out of label tape and wisely decided to abandon the effort altogether.
