“He’s a good kid.” She sat down next to him, entwining her fingers in his. “He looks a lot like Mac actually.”

“None of us thought it was possible. It wasn’t supposed to be, we were told that we couldn’t mate with full humans and produce healthy offspring.” He squeezed her hands. “I guess we need to be careful then. Birth control, number two priority.”

  “What’s number one?”

“You. You’re my number one priority now. I know you’re still going to have moments where you freak out. This whole relationship thing is new to both of us, but we’ll figure it out together. As long as we trust each other, and I trust you, Elle, implicitly.”

Her breath caught in her throat. She could feel the start of every lock she’d built around her heart shattering. It would be slow, she had no illusions about that, but it was happening. Someone loved her enough to try. She fought back the well of emotions that had begun to erupt. She turned her head to the side she he wouldn't see her fall to pieces. She was strong and resourceful, not weak and emotional.

He led her gaze back to him and smiled. Kissing her lips. “We need to get ready. We fight her together now.”

“Good,” said Elle. “She needs to know that she can’t keep manipulating people like she does. And she certainly can’t go around inciting violence. Not anymore.” She squeezed Lyson’s hand. “What’s Mac going to do about Blaze?”

“He doesn’t know yet. He wants to see him of course, but he can’t rush it. It’s delicate.”

“We can’t hurt Tessa can we?”

“No.” Lyson shook his head. “We can’t hurt the mother of Mac’s child. But we can stop her doing what she has been doing. We have to stop this.”

  “Together,” said Elle.

  Lyson grinned. “Yes. Together.”

The little boy wondered where his mother was. She was never far away, even though at times she disappeared and he didn’t know where she went.

“Blaze, honey, come and eat your breakfast.”

He crashed the flying dinosaur toy into the blocks causing them to explode and scatter around the floor. “Coming,” he called to Nina, his nanny. He picked up his toys and returned them to the toy bin.

Blaze shuffled his feet as he walked down the carpeted corridor to the kitchen. The slate tiles were cold under his feet. He didn’t like cold. He liked hot. Everything was better when it was hot, hot, hot.

Nina piled three pancakes onto his plate at the table. He sat down and picked up his fork waiting until she poured the warmed syrup on them. “Where’s mommy?” he asked.

“She’s gone on a trip.” Nina smiled and sat next to him. “I’m sure she won’t be long.”

“Where did she go?” He frowned as he stabbed his fork into the top of the pancake stack. “Why didn’t she take me?”

“It was business,” said his nanny. “Don’t worry, she’ll be back before you know it.”

“Can we go to the park today?” He looked up hopefully even though he knew what the answer would be.

“You know we can’t leave the building without your mother. It’s the rules.”

  “I hate the rules.”

Nina sighed. “Well, they are what they are, although why a young boy isn’t allowed outside to throw and kick a ball is beyond me. In my day that’s all we did.”

“One day I’m going to live outside. I’m going to climb the trees and roll in the grass. And I’m going to fly like a dinosaur, and have big wings, and no one will be able to catch me.”

Nina nodded. “Eat up. You won’t be able to do any of that if you don’t eat your food and get big and strong.”

“Yeah, I’m going to be big and strong,” he repeated. He pretended his hand was a flying dinosaur and crashed it into the palm of his other hand, making a swooshing sound as he did. He laughed when his hands hit.

He stuffed his mouth with a forkful of pancakes. “I hope mommy comes home soon.”

  “I’m sure she will.”

“Maybe she’ll find me a daddy.”

Nina sighed again. “It would do that woman good to find a man to help look after everything. So sad that he died when you were born.”

  “Yeah,” said Blaze. “He exploded.”

Nina chuckled. “I’m not sure that’s exactly what happened.”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. Mom doesn’t say. I think it makes her sad.”

“Such a shame. Hard working single mother running a multi million dollar corporation like she does. She must love you very much.”

“Yup, we love each other,” he said. He looked thoughtful. “I hope she comes home soon. I might draw her a picture for when she gets back.”

“That sounds like a wonderful thing to do.”

Blaze grinned. Yup, his mom would like that. She’d be back soon and she’d tell him all about her adventures. Until then, he had lots to do up here. “I’ve finished,” he said, pushing the plate away from him.

“Okay, you can go and play while I clear up.”

Blaze walked into his bedroom. He looked out his window to the city beyond. He could see for miles from up here and often spent time wondering what was further than he could see. One day he’d find out. When he grew up, he was going to explore this place and see everything.

  One day.
