  In 2014, Jefferson County, New York, elected the first woman sheriff in the history of the state.

  The motto of the New York state police really is Excellence Through Knowledge and has been since 1917. I think it should be adopted nationally and used as a beacon for progress.

  DEREK B. MILLER has worked in international peace and security for think tanks, diplomatic missions, and the United Nations. He is the author of two novels, Norwegian by Night—which won the Crime Writers’ Association’s John Creasey Dagger Award, was an Indies Choice Honor Book, and was included in the The Millions’ “Hall of Fame”—and The Girl in Green, which was a Shelf Awareness “Best Book of the Year” and a finalist for the Gold Dagger. He lives in Oslo, Norway.
