Speed blinked. That would mean the commies would win. What other explanation could there be for all the degradation he’d seen? It wasn’t like Americans would defeat the Soviets and then just go pagan. He shook his head. “Are there other theories?”
“Not one that I would hold to, but a less sophisticated model would claim, if Karen played a major role in your friend’s escape, and he returned to his own time and commenced a relationship with her ancestor, that would lead to Karen not being born, therefore Karen wouldn’t be there to save you—or him and that would have disastrous consequences.”
Speed clanked his fork on the plate as he went for another bite. “What type of consequences?”
“The destruction of all of time and space.”
