“What happened to taking things slow?” Aubrey asked.
Sam wrapped his arms around her waist. “Let’s see. You arrived back in Maplesville about two months ago, and moved into my place this week. You need to accept that we don’t know how to take things slow.”
Aubrey kissed his chin. “I’m not complaining.”
A few minutes later, Dale and Nyree walked through the cafeteria door, hand in hand.
Ian made a production of sizing them up as they approached the group. He circled the couple, looking them over from top to bottom. “Her hair’s in place and his shirt buttons aren’t messed up,” he said. “Damn.”
Sam held his hand out. “Give me my five dollars.”
“What’s going on?” Nyree asked as Ian handed the bill to Sam.
“These two bet on whether or not you and Dale went somewhere to make out.”
Nyree’s eyes went wide and her cheeks instantly tinted pink. Aubrey and Sonny both burst out laughing.
Sam grunted and slapped the five-dollar bill back into Ian’s outstretched hand. He looked over at Dale with a look of pure revulsion. “You disgust me.”
“Shut up,” Dale said, punching him on the arm. “So, are we turning this into a going away party?” he asked.
“Hey, we’re not leaving just yet,” Aubrey said. “I still have a couple of singing commitments to fulfill. And I want to finish up this summer session of school before making another big move.”
“He knows exactly when you all are leaving,” Nyree said. “He’s already booked a flight to come out there in the fall.”
Dale hunched his shoulders. “I’ve never been to Disneyland. Besides, Aubrey said I’m invited any time I want to come out there.”
Sam’s brows rose. “Any time?”
“That’s right,” Aubrey said. “Every single one of you is invited whenever you want to come out to see us.”
“Just call first,” Sam said.
Aubrey pinched him on the arm again. “Stop being mean,” she said with a laugh.
He swooped down and kissed her neck, whispering in her ear. “You know that every time you pinch me it means I’m going to pinch you harder tonight, right?”
“Why do you think I keep pinching you?” she returned.
He gave her a light pinch on the ass before going over to join Ian and Dale. The trio stood side by side, their arms draped over each other’s shoulders.
Aubrey’s heart swelled with emotion as she watched Sam and Ian belly laugh at something Dale said. They’d been this way since high school, leaning on each other, having each other’s backs. It was a friendship that even two thousand miles would not be able to sever. Aubrey had no doubt about it. Distance could never come between those three. Nor would it come between Sam and this town.
Maplesville was in his blood. It was in her blood too.
No matter where life took them, this place, these people, would always be home.
