Yates, Rose Lamartine 1
Robert’s time as Viceroy of India was personally and professionally very difficult.
Constance and her mother loved each other deeply, but their relationship was emotionally complex: Edith demanded Constance’s full attention.
Pretending to be someone else always gave the awkward and shy Constance courage.
Constance shown here as Prince Charming to Betty’s Cinderella.
The young Victor Lytton took this family photograph of Robert surrounded by – from left – Emily, Neville, Constance, Betty and Edith.
Edith was both a grande dame and a loving mother, shown here with Constance (left) and Betty.
The imposing view of Knebworth House, as Constance would have known it at the turn of the century.
Dogs were always an important part of Constance’s life: she found them much easier to relate to than people.
Constance’s frequent illnesses are very apparent in this picture.
In 1908, Victor could finally afford to move back to Knebworth: this picture taken to mark the occasion gives some idea of how large the extended family had become.

Her imprisonment at Holloway was a transformative experience for Constance. © Museum of London
A rare image with a smile: Constance is wearing the medal earned as part of her ‘Holloway degree’.
Victor, around the time he was working on the Conciliation Bill.
Betty was a leading Conservative supporter of extending the vote to women.
Emily joined the WSPU before Constance but left the organisation when the women turned to violence.
Neville at work in his studio: he was less politically active than his siblings.
‘Jane Warton’ – the infamous disguise that Constance adopted to prove the government’s double standards. Constance Lytton was not forcefed; Jane Warton was. © Museum of London

After her stroke, Constance was confined to bed and unable to write: her friends clubbed together to buy her this typewriter.
Constance’s note, written in her left hand, to commemorate the Representation of the People Act 1918.
