  Epilogue

  Three weeks later

  - Vrax'ton -

He found Earth society strange, but perfectly healthy. They still used wheeled vehicles, and the immense variety of entertainments staggered him at first. But he liked it. It was dynamic and vibrant and rich in many ways. He knew that he was cutting the somewhat primitive planet some slack because it had produced his wife, and that otherwise he might have frowned at their lack of an obvious and all-pervading warrior culture. But the culture they had seemed to work perfectly well, so he wasn't going to judge it too harshly.

The cities took some getting used to, though. He had never seen anything like them, and the throngs of people everywhere made him dizzy. But he could probably learn to tolerate it. He doubted he'd ever like it. Even looking at them from above he felt vertigo at the thousands of lights below.

“What do you think?” Harper said from the seat beside him.

  “Hmm? Oh, wonderful. Indeed, perfect.”

“Yeah? You don't think I mangled that joke about the fire and the hot love that really means hot sex?”

“What? Oh, that. I don't know. They laughed. I understand that's the point.”

“Uh-huh. What did you think I meant?”

“I thought you meant your face and your scent and your voice and your body and your soul.”

He turned away from the window. She was peering at him as if she didn't know whether or not he was being serious. If only she knew.

Her brown eyes went moist, which seemed to happen a lot when they were alone. “You know, you say some things sometimes that just floor me. Because you sound so sincere. And I just forget where I am. What were we talking about?”

He stretched back in his seat. Whatever their failings, the Earthlings built comfortable shuttles. “Your joke at the entertainment show.”

“Yeah. Well, as long as they kind of laugh. I think it was okay.”

After they had come to Earth, Harper had immediately become the most famous woman on the planet for marrying an alien. An alien king, even. And so they both had to go on many entertainment shows where they were asked questions and had to answer them in humorous way. Vrax'ton had over-prepared badly for the first one, before he got the point: the people just wanted to see them. They could talk about geology for all they cared.

They would stay on Earth for a few weeks and then go back to Acerex. Earth had no alien threats yet, but it seemed that Acerex had little else, and Vrax'ton was needed to defend the planet from alien invaders. Harper didn't seem to have much against it, as long as they would come to Earth once in a while.

And they would. Vrax'ton found it refreshing. He just wished the Earthlings didn't wear such confining clothes. The suit Harper had gotten him looked good, even he saw that. But it was tight everywhere and he missed the reassuring weight of his axe in its belt. But Harper liked the way he looked in it. And he liked the way she looked in her elegant dress. He would like her in anything. He had fallen for her when she was wearing a garish jumpsuit, after all. More or less wearing, anyway.

Indeed he had known she was his Fated Mate. Right there in the Gulg ship he had known it with total certainty. It was just like the stories said – an explosion in the mind, a joy beyond anything else.

The shuttle touched down on the roof of the hotel, and they made their way down to the suite right underneath it. Here, the floor-to-ceiling windows gave them a perfect view of the city at night, and Vrax'ton wished he could have pulled the curtains shut to give his mind some rest from the dizzy feeling. But Harper liked it, and he wanted her to be happy. Just as she wanted his happiness and indulged him in many things.

He helped her take off her outer garment, then innocently proceeded to take off her dress, as well.

She turned and smiled. “Yeah? My stars, if I'd known alien warriors were so insatiable, I would have come to space much sooner!”

Her dress fell lightly to the floor and he unsnapped her bra. “Better late than never, as I understand is a common expression here. But of course I'd say that you were right on time.”

&nb
sp; The black bra joined the dress on the hardwood floor, and he cupped her naked breasts from behind and kissed her neck.

“You know,” she said and reached behind her to cup his hardness, “I think I pretty much agree. Speaking of that, there's something that's not right on time.”

He slid the panties down and she stepped out of them, then turned around and got busy on his suit.

“Really?” he said, not really listening. Her naked body always took his breath away. “I wonder what that could be.”

She unsnapped the very un-warriorlike buttons of his shirt and pulled the white fabric out of his pants. “I'll tell you later. By the way, completely unrelated, how do you feel about heirs to the kingdom? You like those, right?”

He stiffened. Something not on time and heirs to the kingdom? He wasn't an expert on these things, but it sounded like ... and that impish look on her face ...

His mind brightened with a sudden light and he grabbed her shoulders. “Are we ... I mean, are you ... No, are we ...?”

She gave him a sweet smile. “We are. I am. And we are. Heir to the kingdom expected eight months from now. I guess we must have done something right on that damn fire planet.”

He lost his ability to speak for a moment and hugged her tight, then quickly pushed her away. “Spirits, I shouldn't be too rough with you now that you're ... we're expecting.”

She rolled her eyes. “You know, I checked with the doctors, and nothing has to change for a good while yet. You were never that rough anyway.”

His mind was a turmoil of happiness and worry. “But can we ... can I ...?”

She took his hands and squeezed them, looking up at him with those clear eyes he loved. “Yes. You can. We can. Okay? And I'm thinking we can now.”

He was still stunned by the news, and let her lead him over to the bed, her naked, ample behind jiggling with each step in a way that made his manhood throb and twitch.
