Suspicious Behavior

  Darren blinked. “Wait, what?”

Erin laughed. “Dad gets ‘combative’ when he comes out of anesthesia. Nailed Zach right in the cheekbone.”

  “‘Zach,’ huh?”

“Well yeah. He does have a first name.”

Darren chuckled, patting my arm. “And you must’ve known he was going to be interested in your daughter.” He beamed. “Look how protective he is, Erin. Even when he’s drugged out of his mind.”

  She snickered.

“Shut up, both of you,” I grumbled.

Darren laughed again. “Since when do surgeons come by four times to check on patients in post-op?”

Without an ounce of shame, she said, “When they’re single?”

  “Fair point,” he said.

Erin grinned, but then she turned serious. “Do you need anything? Food? Pain pills?”

“I could use some water, actually.” Now that I thought about it, my mouth was parched. “I’m not all that hungry, but if you and Darren want to get something to eat, go for it.”

  They exchanged looks and shrugged.

“Your dad’s got some take-out menus in the kitchen.” He stood. “Why don’t we have a look?”

She nodded. To me, she said, “I’ll be right back with the water.”

  “Thanks, kiddo.”

  She disappeared into the kitchen.

Darren gave my shoulder a squeeze. “Sure you don’t need anything else?”

  “Just you.”

He smiled and came down for one more kiss. “As if you could get rid of me.”

As if I’d ever want to.

We exchanged smiles, and he went into the kitchen to figure out some food with Erin. While they chatted about burgers and Chinese food in the next room, I closed my eyes and let out a breath. I was looking forward to the day when our lives were uneventful and boring so we could actually enjoy each other and just be together. When downtime wasn’t in short supply, and sex wasn’t something that had to be snatched up in frantic, stolen moments during which we prayed like hell our phones didn’t ring or the sky didn’t fall.

But, for now, the bullets weren’t flying. Our serial killer was on his way to prison. Brian and Jenna were safe. Darren and I had made it out in one piece, give or take.

He was here now, tired and frustrated but okay. And when things finally did calm down, when things did finally get boring and the only thing I had to lose sleep over was who my daughter was dating, I had no doubt Darren would still be here.

And I sure as hell wasn’t going anywhere.

L.A. WITT is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn't lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don’t tell Lauren. And definitely don’t tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut . . .
