  Chapter 10

  Southampton, England.

I know my name is Catherine McConnell. But, I have no idea where I am. Everyone calls me Cat, and I’m a Hockeyroo Striker. With no memory of how I got here.

All I know is I am awake. And scared.

Moving is difficult. My arms aren’t cooperating. When I try shifting, my right knee shoots pain up and down my leg.

The fluorescent lights above sting my eyes. I open and then squeeze them shut. Noises; a slow rhythmic beeping is following the beats of my heart. There’s a sound of rapid footsteps, running.

  “Cat! Thank God!”

Despite the fogginess, that voice is familiar. It triggers my own. “Mum?”

Her arm’s on my shoulder. Her face in my neck. One arm, I can get that around to hug her. She sounds happy. So what’s making her cry?

  Then the questions start.

Where am I? Why’s mum so happy? Why is there so much pain?
