“Michael actually recommended you to us. He told us that you’re the better candidate.”
The second shock hit me just as quickly as the first one did. This time I didn’t drop my phone.
“He said what?”
“It’s true. We were surprised as well, given his resume. However, the things he said about you, how he detailed your work ethic, your personality, and your drive to get things accomplished, convinced us that you are the better candidate.”
“Oh, wow…”
“So, Ali do you want the job?”
Chapter 11
Michael
It’s been a week since I’ve seen Ali. Every time I’ve seen her in class, she would sit on the opposite side of the auditorium, and out of class, she would ignore me and go the opposite way. I haven’t even seen her in our usual library spot. There was no doubt that she wanted nothing to do with me.
I didn’t mean to get a higher grade than her. Honestly, I thought we both knew the material well. If I could, I’d take a time machine and go back in time to fail the test. Hell, I’ll do anything to be with her again. That’s why I didn’t take the job at Forrest & Young. Call me crazy, but I never had a day like the one I had with Ali. I’ve never grew close to someone in such a short amount of time. It’s crazy to think that I’d catch feelings for a person once considered my rival, but hell, crazier things have happened.
I’d heard rumors that Ali had taken the job at Forrest & Young. I was happy for her. She deserved the job. I wasn’t worried about my job prospects, because just as I closed the door at F & Y three more doors opened up. Life was funny like that.
Even though, I was still getting the job I wanted, there was a part of me, that still felt like I’d gained nothing. Was it crazy to to want more? To want someone in your life that made you laugh, have fun, and pushed you to achieve?
That was what Ali was to me. God, did I miss her.
Outside, dozens of college students rushed by me as I stood at the fountain remembering the day that Ali and I had. The fountain was how everything started. It was the spark, the catalyst, and the push for my new feelings for Ali. It all started here. I was deep in thought when someone nudged my arm.
“You need a quarter?” A familiar voice asked.
Looking up, I saw the smiling face of Ali, with her hand stretched out with a coin.
“Sure,” I grinned.
I took it and flipped it into the water.
“What did you wish for?” She asked.
“I wished for you.”
She looked down and rubbed her arm.
“Michael…”
“No, Ali, please…” With two fingers I lifted her chin and grabbed her hands. “Hanging out with you the other day, I’d never felt something like that before. I didn’t think I’d catch feelings for you like this, but I did. I know it is crazy, but I have to know where this goes. Don’t you?”
“I want to but…it doesn’t change what you did.”
“I know. I’m sorry. If I would’ve known, I’d never would have passed that test. Hell, I would have left it all blank. I don’t care about a stupid job. I care about you.”
Ali stared into my eyes. I couldn’t read her emotions as they seemed to be all over the place.
“Why did you not take the job at Forrest & Young?” She finally asked.
“I didn’t want it. Jobs come and go, but love is eternal. Love is something you fight for. Love is something you give everything for. I love you Ali, with all of my heart. I love you. I can’t stand being apart from you.”
A wide grinned spread on her face as she looked back at me. Tears fell down her face as she squeezed my hands.
“I love you too. I know it’ crazy but…”
“It’s not crazy., it’s love.” I dragged her close and bent her over giving her passionate kiss. Breaking apart, we gazed into each other’s eyes as she caressed my chin.
“I guess you got your wish.”
“And a whole lot more.” I grinned, kissing her once more.
