He cupped my face, holding me in place. “I am being serious,” he told me. “And at first, I wasn’t sure I could.”
My stomach dropped.
His hands tightened on my cheeks. “But you did nothing wrong,” he said vehemently. “I know you think it’s the end of the world, and I won’t lie and say it doesn’t look grim. But this is our best-case scenario. Between Beth and Ames, maybe we can finally stop them.”
“But can I really have my own parents locked up?”
“Can you live with yourself if you have the ability to stop them and you just let them walk?” he asked me.
I nibbled at my lip for a moment. “No. I couldn’t.”
We stood in silence again, just looking at each other. The odds were not in our favor, I knew that. But Ryder seemed to believe we could do this.
Only … I wasn’t so sure.
Maybe he saw something in my expression because he let go of my face. “I’ve been holding onto this for a few days, and it’s nothing special, but …” He reached into his pocket and held his closed hand out to me. “Whenever you look at it, I want you to remember that I’ll be with you through whatever else comes our way.” His fingers opened, revealing a pretty silver ring with a single purple stone.
My eyes rose from the small band to his hazel irises. “Ryder …”
He trailed his fingers down my arm in a calloused glide and lifted my hand. The ring slipped easily over my middle finger and rested in place, the little crescent moons twinkling merrily in the soft light from my eyes.
“Do you like it?” The question was quiet and unsure.
My head jerked upward and I flung my arms around his neck, holding him tightly. “Yes. It is beautiful,” I whispered, heart full to bursting.
But it was not the ring. Not really. It was the sentiment behind it.
Ryder believed in us. And so could I.
He wrapped me up in his arms. “It’s me and you in this,” he breathed next to my ear. “No matter what else has happened or will happen, I don’t regret meeting you.”
I closed my eyes to stop the burn of happy tears. “And I don’t regret a moment with you.”
He pulled back, and his grin was as feral as ever. Almost excited. “So … We heading South, vampire girl?”
I couldn’t stop my laugh as my head bobbed in agreement. “South it is, hunter boy.”
To be continued in Undead and Human Dances.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
A. Vers is an immortal being masquerading as a writer of dark fantasy. Georgia remains her stomping ground, where she resides with her husband, son, and their menagerie of pets in a backwoods town far from others of her kind.
Vers has an almond addiction, a lust for coffee, and her music of choice will always be heavy metal. Though she has held jobs in nearly every field (being immortal has its perks), writing and reading are her two dearest passions.
With a twisted sense of humor and a love of all things dark and wayward, Vers is known for creating worlds riddled with the kinds of heroes we all want to be, and the monsters that will keep you awake at night.
