Truth or Dare
“P
lease do not forget your assignment. There are only two weeks left before the due date. All of you should have completed the Literature Review by now,” Professor Mark said as he wiped the whiteboard clean. “I will not tolerate any late submissions. Use the few days over the holiday to work on it. Anyone who submits later than the due date will have their...”
I wasn’t paying attention. My mind was somewhere else. I was on top of a mountain, sitting on a huge rock together with Liam. Call me a pervert if you want, because I would admit that I am one. I was picturing us shirtless, our arms around each other’s waist, and our bodies against each other as we watched the beautiful sunrise after a long hike.
But instead of the sun, I stared at him. He was the cutest person I’d ever met. I’d ever seen. Without any makeup, he had the smoothest oval face. His hair was brown and coiffed. The hair color wasn’t a dye. He was born naturally with it.
I played with his hair. He would let me, even if I wasn't daydreaming. We were best friends, and we always did these kinds of things together. But the main reason I always played with his hair was that I was always jealous of him. Not only his face was flawless, but his hair was the same too, soft and silky.
He was more than cute. He was hot, having a lean chest and abs. It should really be a crime, honestly, for him to look so perfect. Even when I had almost the same muscled body as he did, something about him just seemed more. Most people would say mine was better defined, and even though I knew that, his made me want his body. It completely didn’t make sense.
It wasn’t only me. People in school always checked him out no matter the gender. There was this University of Buvekeli Confession Page, where people would post random gossip and stuff anonymously online, and Liam was always featured as one of the most-wanted guys by both males and females.
In my daydream, Liam’s arm around my waist moved. He pushed my head gently from the side and made me lean on his shoulder. I felt his warmth and was immediately tempted to kiss him. I didn’t hesitate. I leaned up from him and just kissed. After all, this wasn’t real. It wouldn’t do anything to him. But how I wish this was true. How I wish he was my boyfriend. If only I could—
“Bro? Bro!” Someone pushed my head roughly, bringing me back to reality. “Snap out of it.” It was Liam. He was sitting right next to me, like every day in class.
I turned around so hard that it pulled the muscle in my neck. I grimaced at both the pain and his annoyance. “What?”
“Is there a problem?” Professor Mark asked from the front. He was done with the whiteboard by now and stared at me.
“No, sir,” Liam quickly answered. “We’re fine.”
“Good,” Professor Mark replied. “If there aren’t any more questions, I’ll dismiss the class. See you all after the holidays.” He took up his laptop and book from the lecturer’s desk and exited the classroom.
The other students in class hurriedly went out after him, leaving both Liam and me alone in the classroom. Both of us had no class after this, so we didn’t have to rush.
“What’s wrong with you these days?” Liam asked. “You’ve been daydreaming a lot,” he said as he tried to reach his hand over to push my head again.
I pushed his hand out of the way. “Leave me alone. His class was boring.”
Liam’s phone rang and he picked it up. “Hi, babe.”
I sighed because not only was I interrupted from my sweet fantasy, but I felt like I just took a slap from his girlfriend, reminding me to stop dreaming the impossible.
I shook my head and focused on a text that had just come in. It was from Nathalie, my other best friend. We were best friends since childhood. She bombarded me with text messages.
Whr r u?
Y r u making me wait under the hot sun?
Don’t u know that it’s terrible for my skin?
What if nobody wants me anymore?
Hello?!
I know ure reading thr. Answer me right now!
WHR R U?!
“Oh, fuck!” I stood up, hitting the table and surprising Liam. “I gotta go, Liam. I forgot I need to do groceries with Nat for the party.” I rushed out of the classroom.
Liam removed himself from his phone for a second just to comment “Forgetful as always.” I was already at the classroom’s door. “Hey, did you forget to buy her present too?!” he raised his voice so that I could hear.
“Oh, crap,” I muttered to myself. I took a few steps back. “Can you help me with that?”
Liam laughed in triumph as if he had already expected that. “Just go, bro. I’ll settle it for you.” Then he was back talking to his phone. “Sorry, babe. As usual, Eth was…”
I exited the classroom, didn’t want to hear him bad-mouthing me to his girlfriend. I went to the building where Nathalie was supposed to meet me, but I couldn’t find her. She was nowhere. I looked up, because I couldn’t not do that after what she’d texted me. The sky was cloudy, like it was about to rain soon. And at the building’s entrance where I was standing, there was shade. I was standing under it with no possible touch from the sunlight. How was that making her wait under the hot sun?
“Where’s the sun?” I scratched my head.
Whr r u? I typed. Just when I was about to hit send, suddenly, my ear got twisted. It was so painful that it sent shivers down my spine.
“Ow, ow, ow!” I pushed her hand away. It was Nathalie of course. I didn’t even have to guess. This was her usual bad habit. “Where’s the sun?” I turned around to ask her.
Nathalie was almost Liam’s counterpart. She could easily be the most beautiful woman that I’d ever seen, but the difference was that Liam didn’t have to use any makeup. Nathalie used plenty. Her hair was golden brown and it was always kept long and wavy. Ever since her mom had allowed her to dye her hair during high school, her hair was that color. She said she wanted her hair to be that way because it would make h
er different from other typical school girls. In my opinion, she would have easily made it to the top most-wanted girls list if it wasn’t for her obsession with either twisting Liam’s or my ears.
“There.” Nathalie pointed somewhere in the sky.
I turned to see.
“Eh, Eth!” And immediately my head was smacked.
“Ow!” I exclaimed again.
“You’re so easy to get tricked.” She giggled and pointed to herself. “Nah, I’m the sun.”
“You?” I sniggered.
“It’s my big day, okay? I can be whatever I want,” she said and twirled once enthusiastically like some cartoon princess. She then held my arm like she was my girlfriend. “Let’s go, I still have a lot of stuff to buy. You’re coming to help me, right?”
“Mm,” I nodded.
“Good. Now first stop, to the superstore,” she said and took out her phone. She pressed the Notes app and read her checklist out loud. “Chicken, sweet potatoes, carrots, lemon, capsicums, sausages—”
“Nat,” I called out, interrupting her. “Read it when we’re there, okay? You’ll read it again when we’re there anyway.”
“What?” Nathalie complained but closed the app. “I thought of just telling you first what you’re gonna buy.”
“Wait,” I stopped. No one told me this. “I’m gonna buy? I thought we’re gonna buy.”
“Oh yeah, you’re right,” she said and pulled me by the arm she was holding to make me move. “We’re gonna buy,” she corrected. “But you’re gonna pay. Do you expect the birthday girl to pay? You forgot my gift anyway.”
My jaw dropped. How did she know? Did Liam just text her and sell me out? “Fine,” I sighed and let it go. I was the one at fault anyway.
Liam was almost as close to Nathalie as I was, ever since I introduced Liam to her during high school. The three of us spent most of our time together, and we bonded even quicker when the three of us ended up in the same home class by coincidence.
As we passed by the campus’s tennis court, Nathalie shouted, “Oli!” She waved her arm at one of the female players on the court.
The girl with a black ponytail waved back. “Nat, Nat!” With a spin, she smacked the tennis ball and scored. “Yes!”
Nathalie cheered so loud that I had to back away from her a little. But she never let me. She pulled me back to her by my arm she was still holding. “Don’t come late! We’re gonna get wasted!”
“See you later!” she said as she threw a tennis ball high up in the air before whacking it forward.
Nathalie and I resumed walking. She was back looking at her phone. She was scrolling through Instagram this time.
“Nat, if you’re always holding my arm like this, I doubt you’ll get a boyfriend anytime soon.”
“What?” she said and shot a glare at me. “Eh, Eth, so I can’t be your girlfriend?”
I laughed. “Don’t be ridiculous. We both know you and I are impossible.”
“You sound like you’re gay,” Nathalie commented.
“What? No! I’m not gay,” I quickly lied. I had never in my life told a single soul about my sexuality. Not even her or Liam. Mainly because I didn’t want to risk Liam finding out that I was gay. I was afraid we wouldn’t be as close as before, like there would be a boundary if he found out I preferred cocks over vaginas. I didn’t want Liam thinking that I would always want to have sex with him all the time.
Nathalie laughed. “Just kidding, Eth. I know you’re just afraid that you can’t find a good girlfriend like Liam’s, right?”
I knitted my eyebrows. I couldn’t see what was good about Liam’s girlfriend. I mean, I didn’t get Liam’s excitement. True, his girlfriend was kind, friendly and open-minded but she had boobs and a pussy. Those were nothing good.
“No,” I answered. “I’m just worried about you, Nat. You’re turning twenty this year and have never had a boyfriend.”
I was sure she was going to twist my ear or at least smack me, but instead she burst out laughing, looking at her phone. Totally missed what I’d just said.
“What were you doing in class, Eth?!” She showed me the screen of her phone. I couldn’t believe what I saw. I quickly snatched the phone from her hand. She was still laughing.
It was Liam’s Insta-story. I was staring into space, mouth like I was about to send a flying kiss to Professor Mark’s butt. Fuck Liam. He must have video recorded it before he pushed my head earlier.
Nathalie grabbed her phone back. And she’d caught what I said earlier. “You should be speaking for yourself, Eth. You’re turning twenty this year without a single crush.”
I felt the burn despite the fact it wasn’t the truth. I’d never dated anyone, but I did have a crush. It was only that it was impossible for us to be together.
The drive to the superstore was quick. It was located in one of Buvekeli’s malls, not too far away from the campus. Nathalie took the wheel because it was her car. I’d offered to drive since it was her birthday, but she said she couldn’t trust me because, for all her life, she had only seen me ride a motorbike, even though I had the license to show. She said she wasn’t going to risk me with her “baby.” I said if she kept talking like that, it would be no surprise if no guys would want her.
As I’d predicted, she was reading the checklist in her Notes app again. Not only that, she was calling me to go here and there to collect her groceries around the superstore like I was her maid. All she did was stand in one place and point her magical finger, north, south, east, west, at the items and I had to get everything for her.
“Next, Somersby, Eth.” She meant the alcoholic cider drink. “Two dozen.”
“Two dozen?” I repeated. “Nat, are you robbing me?”
“I was just joking earlier, Eth,” Nathalie said. “Don’t take everything so literally. Of course you don’t have to pay for any. I’m the one hosting the party.”
“Now you make me feel like a—”
“Sam, Sam!” she shouted over to the other side of the superstore. She waved her arm again.
I looked at where she was waving. It was Samuel and his girlfriend, Daisy, holding hands as they scanned the dairy area. Samuel was my housemate besides Liam. The three of us had been living in the same apartment since we started studying in Buvekeli. Samuel was a year-four student despite that his program, Mass Communication, was only a three-year program. He was also the topmost—not topmost wanted but brilliant—student in his department. Samuel’s favorite colors were black and white, and those were his wardrobe’s only colors, including his underwear. No one would see him in any other color.
“Hey!” Samuel waved back. He talked to Daisy for a short moment, probably explaining to her who Nathalie was, before they came to us. “Hi, Nat. Groceries for the party tonight?”
Nathalie grinned. “Yup. The later, the fresher,” she said and snapped her fingers. “What about you? You’re cumming, right?” Nathalie purposely teased him in front of Daisy.
“I promised you I’ll be there,” Samuel replied innocently. “Just thought of restocking our fridge first,” he said as he held up a big pack of parmesan cheese. He meant his, Liam’s, and mine—we shared the same place. “Hi, Eth,” he greeted.
I nodded friendly, greeting him back.
“Oh, and I’m sure you’re going to like the gift tonight.” Samuel grinned at Nathalie.
“Aw.” Nathalie sent Samuel a flying kiss in the most seductive way right in front of Daisy. “Thank you, Sammy.” Then, she was talking to Daisy, whose face was already half red. “Hi, Daisy. You wanna come tonight too? You can come with Sam.” Nathalie blinked her eyes multiple times quickly.
Daisy’s anger quickly turned into confusion. “I…”
“It’s okay if you don’t want to,” Samuel said to his girlfriend.
“I want to!” Daisy quickly said, almost too loudly. “Thanks, Nathalie. I’ll—we’ll see you tonight.”
Nathalie leaned over to whisper to her. “Make sure you remind Sam to
shower. He always forgets to shower.”
Daisy looked even more confused. I laughed silently from behind.
“I’m right here,” Samuel complained.
“Oh yeah, why are you still here, Eth?” Nathalie asked me. “Go get the Somersby before I Somersby you.”
I didn’t know what that meant, and I didn’t know why I pictured her sticking a bottle of Somersby up my anus. Wait, Liam doing it would be good... Fuck. What are you thinking, Eth? I shook my head, getting rid of the idea so that I could focus on getting the drink Nathalie wanted.
We started our journey home right after we finished groceries. The drive back from Buvekeli to our hometown, Eastville, was about ninety minutes long. I was bored in the car. Nathalie ignored me, busy singing karaoke to herself while blasting the stereo. I understood she needed that, though, so that she wouldn’t fall asleep from the long drive. And there was nothing much to talk to her about, especially when we literally had already talked about all the things in our lives.
I put my seat down into a lying position and viewed Instagram as I waited. I didn’t scroll. Instead, I searched for Liam’s profile to see his new posts directly. He did post something new. Two recent ones. One of them was a picture of him shirtless in the gym, his girlfriend, Joanna, beside him. And another picture of him was also with her in a cafe, having a post-workout meal. I gave both pictures a like. Even though Liam and I were impossible at becoming boyfriends, mainly because he was straight, I still wished true happiness for him. If he was happy with Joanna, then sure. I would let them be together without causing any fuss.
I was content like this, knowing the person I liked the most was happy.
“What are you smiling at, Eth?” Nathalie snatched my phone right away while she was still driving. “Eh, wait. Don’t tell me you like... Joanna?!” She jumped to the worst possible conclusion. She returned my phone by throwing it onto my lap. “Eh, Eth, what are you thinking?! You wanna snatch one of your best friends’ girl? You know there won’t be happy endings, right? It’ll be either him or her.”
