Hot Mess Page 17

by Emma Hart

  “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was afraid that if I did, everything would have gone so fast. We’ve only known each other a month as it is.”

“I never would have forced you to do something you weren’t ready for. Hell, three weeks ago, I wasn’t ready for more. Even if you’d said you were staying.”

I swallowed. “I’m sorry. I just needed time.”

“Don’t apologize for being selfish. You had your world pulled out from under you. You didn’t owe me anything.” He covered my hand on his face with his. “I’m sorry.”

“For what? Wanting an answer?” I raised my eyebrows. “Well, here it is: I’m not leaving. I’m not going anywhere. I’m moving to Creek Keys permanently, and if you tell me now you’re not interested in dating me, I’m going to bury you under that goddamn deck. Alive.”

He grinned, pulling me tight against him. The tip of his nose brushed against mine, and his breath tickled across my lips. “Oh, we’re dating. And just you try to get rid of me.”

He tilted his head and kissed me. My entire body was on fire as I wrapped my arms around his neck and plastered my body against his. This kiss felt like the first one, except this had so much more emotion behind it. It was deep and real and hungry, and I melted into it.

My heart thundered against my ribs. Goosebumps prickled over my arms, and a shiver shot down my spine when he deepened the kiss.

It was like a switch that had flipped. Until now, we’d only kissed. Neither one of us had wanted to take our relationship any further, just in case.

Just in case I changed my mind.

Just in case he decided he didn’t want Ari around me.

Just in case, just in case, just in case.

And I was happy for that just in case. It meant we’d moved slowly, without expectation, without any demands from the other.

  Until now.

Theo broke the kiss and grabbed my hand. “Fuck this, let’s go.” He dragged me toward the stairs and up them. I fought back a laugh as he abandoned me at the top and peered into Ari’s room. She was clearly asleep because he gently shut the door, then flipped a switch and once again dragged me across the hall.

He pulled me into his room that I’d only ever been in once and that had been because I’d gotten lost on the way to Ari’s room and mixed them up. He paused to quietly shut the door, and I laughed.

That laugh disappeared the moment Theo pulled me against him once again. This kiss was harder and hotter than before, and he wasted no time in exploring my body with his hands. My skin came alight under his touch, and in no time at all, my dress was on the floor and so was his shirt.

Together, we fell back against the bed. I bounced a little on the mattress, but I barely had a chance to squeal before Theo’s lips covered mine once again and I was lost to him. It felt like no time at all until we were both naked and running our hands over each other, touching every inch of each other’s bodies.

We broke only for Theo to go to the nightstand and open a box of condoms. A new one, I noted with a grin.

A grin he noticed and returned.

He pulled one out and put it on, then climbed back over me. I parted my legs for him, and I gasped as he positioned himself at my entrance and slowly pushed inside me.

Theo groaned when I clenched around him, and I wrapped my legs around his waist to help guide him inside me. Heat flushed through my body as he moved, thrusting in and out of me slowly. He peppered kisses down my neck and over my collarbone, all the while heat built in my body.

Tingles moved across my skin. My muscles clenched on and off as pleasure built inside me, and Theo’s breathing was harsh and heavy in my ear.

Moans escaped my lips until he swallowed them with his own, stopping me from crying out too loudly. My orgasm came thick and fast after that, swamping my entire body with an intensity that made my eyes water.

Theo’s followed quickly, accompanied by a groan that vibrated across my lips.

Then he collapsed on top of me, breathing heavily, and I wrapped my arms around his shoulders.

  Yep.

I was exactly where I was meant to be.

  EPILOGUE – ELLE

  Eighteen Months Later

Theo wrapped me in his arms tightly outside the courtroom, and I buried my face in his neck.

It was over. It was finally, officially, over.

Mitch would spend the next two years in prison, plus have to pay me damages that would go entirely to charity once I received them.

But it was over. I was vindicated.

The jury took twenty minutes to convict him.

“I’m so happy for you,” he murmured into my ear.

I wasn’t going to cry this time because I’d wasted enough time crying over it all. I was just happy it was over.

Theo released me into the arms of my brother-in-law and then my sister. Emily hugged me tighter than she ever had.

“I’m so proud of you, Elle. You worked so hard for this.” She pulled back and squeezed my hands. “I wish we didn’t have to run, but we have to get Amelia from school. We’ll see you in a few weeks, okay?”

“The house is waiting for you,” Theo assured her, accepting the hug she gave him before she pulled back and we waved them goodbye.

I took five minutes to hug and thank my team, and then Theo and I left ourselves from a private exit. Media was waiting outside as they knew it was the trial day, and even though I’d pulled back massively from such a public life, they were still interested in it because of everything that had happened before.

It was a bit of a precedent in terms of cases, and I was thankful that I had a great partnership with a charity to help other people.

The charity wasn’t the only person I had a great partnership with.

I rested my head on Theo’s shoulder. His parents had traveled to New York ahead of going to Creek Keys to celebrate Christmas there solely to look after Arielle while we attended the court case. Considering I’d only met them a few times last winter because I’d gone to spend Christmas with Emily, it was sweet of them and I really appreciated it.

It took us forever to get through the city and back to the hotel on Times Square. We’d made the mistake of letting Ari pick a place to stay, and while we’d talked her out of some of the extortionately priced hotels, she wasn’t willing to budge on Times Square.

I didn’t blame her. It was the first place I’d visited when we got there.

Unfortunately, there was media outside the hotel, waiting for me.

Theo tossed the cab driver some money and asked him to wait a second. He did, and Theo removed his coat and tossed it over my head so I could enter without too much harassment.

  In theory.

It didn’t stop the shouts or the yells for my attention, but Theo kept me tucked tightly against his side and guided me into the hotel. And he only threatened to punch someone once.

  Not bad.

I shrugged his coat off the second we were inside. “Well, I guess we’re not going anywhere for dinner tonight.”

He smiled at me. “I didn’t plan it anyway.” He took my hand and guided me to the elevators. We only had to wait a moment for it to arrive, and we traveled up to our floor without encountering anyone else.

Thank God. I’d had enough people today.

I yawned as we walked down the hallway to our room. Theo whipped the keycard out of his pocket and inserted it in, then held the door for me to go in first.

There were… candles. Everywhere. The room was dark except for the candles that covered every flat surface, and Ari sat in the middle of the bed, grinning, with something in her hand.

“What’s going on?” I looked behind me at Theo.

“I have a question,” Ari said, drawing my attention back to her. She made a ‘come here’ motion with her hand, and I did as she asked, going to the edge of the bed. It was an envelope. She was holding a little box. “Elle, you are my most favorite person in the whole world. Apart from my dad, of co
urse.”

Theo grinned from next to her. “As it happens, aside from Arielle, you’re also my favorite person in the entire world.” He reached behind Ari and pulled out a small box, one that made my heart jump into my throat. “I never, ever thought you would be the person to bring a light into our lives. If I think back to the day we walked into the diner, I never would have imagined we’d be here with you, right now.”

A lump formed in my throat. I could barely breathe, because while I knew what was happening, I also had no idea.

“I know that today has been one of the best days of your life, and now I’d like to selfishly ask that you consider making it one of mine.” He dropped to one knee and opened the box, showing off a simple band with one diamond in the middle.

“And mine!” Ari jumped off the bed and knelt next to Theo. “Dad. Help. The box is stuck.”

Theo fought a laugh while I tried not to cry, and he opened Ari’s box. Hers was bigger than his, and hers had two necklaces in it like the best friend ones you gave your best friend when you were five.

But that wasn’t what hers said.

One side of hers said daughter, and the other half said mom.

“Oh, get on with it, Theodore,” I whispered, trying not to lose it.

His lips twitched. “Elle, you would make me the happiest man alive if you’d agree to be my wife.”

  I choked on a breath.

“And you would make me…” Ari paused as tears filled her eyes. “Really really happy if you’d adopt me and be my mom.”

I dropped to my knees and hugged them both into me. I sobbed into Theo’s shoulder as Ari cried against my chest, and it took all my strength to whisper, “I would love nothing more in this world than to be your mom,” into her ear.

“Don’t leave me hanging,” Theo joked, his voice cracking.

“Well, I guess I can’t have her without you, can I?”

Together, we all laughed, breaking through the crying.

“Yes,” I said, touching the side of his face. “Yes. A thousand times yes. Forever.”

There’s nothing like starting your Monday morning with a positive pregnancy test.

Trust me, I know. Because I’m looking at one right now.

This might just send her to an early grave, so there’s only one option—pretending the father is my new husband.

Kai Connors was supposed to be nothing more than a one-night stand. A long, dirty, one-night stand fueled by one too many tequila shots, where the only promise was to never speak of it again.
