Sarah felt as if she had lost her rational thought. She fought against him, squirming and wriggling her legs, despite the fact he was still embedded deeply in her. Her arms flailed, and she grunted madly, gasping for air as if she were drowning. The climax was too much, every nerve seemed to have been hit with a hammer at the same time, and she could only shiver and let the paroxysms overtake her.
She was thankful for Dylan’s strong grip on her. He held her tightly until the shudders finally subsided, and at that time her jaw was set like a sharp row of white picket fences, and her lips were drawn back over them. She closed her eyes, and continued to grunt in shallow breaths.
“H-hold me, don’t let go,” she said, slowly relaxing against him.
Gavin sat down on the chair next to the two lovers and stroked her legs and stomach where sweat and other fluids were already drying in the night air. It was a long time before she finally opened her eyes. The back of her head was nestled against the crook in Dylan’s shoulder, and he pulled back a few blonde streaks of hair.
“That was something,” he said.
“That’s an understatement,” Gavin said.
She murmured something but neither of them got it.
“What did you say?” Dylan asked again.
“I said I think… I think I almost transformed there. I know, hybrids can’t. But just at that moment, for a second… I could almost feel something else inside me. It was like looking inward, like being able to see inside yourself. And, something looked back.”
“I’ve heard of people having spiritual experiences during sex, but...”
“What did you see?” Dylan asked calmly, but both he and Gavin had already guessed the answer – even before they’d gotten to know Sarah, even before they’d all made love for the first time, the two partners had sensed it. There was more to her than met the eye, an awareness of her own biological potential.
“I saw a dragon,” she replied after a pause, “a shimmering white one, with blue eyes, and four wings, overlapping like a dragonfly. It was beautiful. Heh, weird, though, right? I’m sure I was just imagining it – all of this is probably rubbing off one me. I’m starting to see dragons everywhere.”
“No,” Gavin said brusquely.
It was Dylan, though, whose words finally reached her.
“What you saw wasn’t a dream, or a hallucination,” he explained. “You are a hybrid, albeit a unique one, but even so… dragon blood runs in your veins. What you saw was a reflection – a metaphorical image of the spirit that lives within you. Just as I’m a green dragon when I transform, and Gavin is a black one when he transforms.”
“You mean, what I saw…?” Sarah eyed both men carefully.
Gavin put his hands behind his head and his gaze disappeared into the mess of stars that wandered north to south along the Milky Way, and sagely replied, “The white dragon was you, Sarah.”
She settled back against Dylan’s chest and reached for Gavin’s arm, stroking it as the sullen man continued his star watching. She had doubted herself before, that she truly could fit into a dragon’s world, and realized now it was Mara’s threat and warning that had stuck with her. She felt sorry for the other hybrid. You were wrong, sister, she wanted to say, and felt a sliver of sympathy.
Now, whenever she closed her eyes, she could see the white dragon staring back, its azure eyes following hers. She knew, without a shred of doubt, where she belonged.
