Char’s the expert at dodging bikers and strollers; Shani keeps turning around as if trying to see everything at once. “I never truly believed buildings could be this tall,” Malou says. “I’ve seen pictures, but—it’s splendid. It’s as if someone towed down the stars and strung them like lanterns on rooftops…”

The weather is perfect, the sky a sweet blue with a scattered ripple of soft grey clouds, the sun just beginning to set on the horizon. And there’s so much fantastic food! Cotton candy, funnel cake, fresh lemonade, the best caramel popcorn ever…

A wooden playground of cleverly built structures, a haven for children, presents itself; the moment you step inside, it’s as if you’re on some grand adventure.

You run through the wooden castles, climb ladders, slide down poles, walk across bridges of wobbly tires and climb over nets. The skills you develop while goofing off with your friends will serve you well when fighting monsters—and, more importantly, you’re having fun.

When you get to the apartment, the e-door buzzes you in, but there’s no one there. After a few minutes of searching, Char discovers a little note stuck on the fridge with a magnet in the shape of a pink high heel.

Called away unexpectedly—Maroon’s daughter is about to give birth to her third boy. Hoping she doesn’t drop before we arrive.

  -xoxo darlings

  Maroon, Bechette, and Alice Iris

The paper smells like old-lady perfume, flowery and powdery, and there are three lipstick kisses at the top of the paper—one plum, one light and vivid purple, and one bright pink.

On the other side of the piece of paper, there’s a list of nearby cultural events that are happening that night, and a list of good places to eat in the area.

A forest…that’s a place with lots of trees, right? Like, many trees? Shani and Char have firsthand experience with them, but Malou is just as curious as you are. After all, seeing pictures of something is way different from actually being there. You can just imagine the susurrus of the leaves whispering to the wind and the smell of the earth after a light rainshower. That seems like the coolest thing, and definitely an amazing experience.

Although you grew up by the ocean, that ocean wasn’t the sort of sea you could swim in. It was too stormy, too rocky, too rough. In comparison, the waves here—though they seem big to Malou—are gentle. You learn tricks for holding your breath longer, how to free yourself if you’re trapped underwater, and how to surround your eyes with captured wind so you can keep them open while swimming.

The spaceport is kind of located in the middle of nowhere. So you trek through the woods, marveling at how fantastic everything is, the moss and the fallen leaves and the little twigs and the sound your steps make, the light that filters through the green canopy.

You get to the cabin, but there’s a note on the door.

Hey! We’re out dealing with a river that flooded recently—the locals need help repairing a bridge and a barn that were damaged. The doors are locked because wildlife will get in otherwise—sorry about that. While you’re waiting for us, why not drop off your things and check out a local attraction?
