David led her to the kitchen. The light dazzled Gwen. Light seemed to leap off the stone countertops, too bright, maybe like the light in an operating theater. Everyday objects—canisters, teakettles, a few people wearing jeans—seemed unfamiliar and out of place.
“Stay here,” David said and placed her in a chair at a wide round kitchen table.
Gwen reached for him, suddenly alarmed, but he moved out of reach without noticing.
“I’m Lisa,” said the girl across the table. “This is Cathy. And you?”
And me what? Gwen wondered, and looked from one to the other. Metal collars on the girls’ throats sparkled with light and she realized they were slaves and that, for whatever reason, here in the kitchen it really was just sort of a normal party.
“Gwen,” Gwen said.
“You look like you’re having a really nice time,” the first girl said and Gwen said something in return and the conversation turned to collars and somehow Gwen got lost in it and a little bit of time passed. Then David was back with a disposable cup of hot chocolate he pressed into her hands.
“Ladies, if you’ll excuse us.”
They found Angel and there was a flurry of conversation before Angel asked David something and then gave Gwen an unexpected hug and said she hoped to see her again, and shook David’s hand and said no, it wasn’t normally policy but she’d seen the shots and it was okay. Gwen stood, bemused, not really listening. Her attention was riveted on the hot chocolate.
Then they were outside where reality wasn’t any more real because the fog had come in, shrouding streetlights and buffering reality away from them.
David laughed suddenly and Gwen pulled herself from her long introspective stare at a halo surrounding a streetlight and said, slowly, “What?”
“Let’s get you back to the hotel and get you some sleep.”
She sharpened, then, a little more aware of the world and a lot more aware of herself. “Let’s get back to the hotel,” she agreed. “But sleep is the last thing I want to do.”
This time when David tied her to the bed he didn’t keep her hips suspended. He threw her down over the pillows so she could grind and probably only tied her up because the restraints were still on the bed.
“I don’t think this is going to take long,” he said, and thrust inside her.
Gwen felt her head roll up in pleasure as David slammed into her. She ground her sex into the pillows and felt his hands come down, slapping her ass, nothing like earlier. Everything like earlier. She felt him stiffen and go still in the instant before he shot into her, making a sound that tore from his throat. He shuddered and Gwen tightened around him as waves of orgasm began to roll over her and David leaned over her, gave her collar one tug, and said, “You’re mine.”
Gwen buried her face in the bedcovers and came, screaming.
She woke slowly the next morning. Hotel rooms always confused her, blackout curtains giving lie to the day outside. David was already awake and when he saw her open her eyes, he smiled and drew her to him, his arms cradling her close. “There are parties everywhere,” he said. “I’m sure—”
She stiffened and pulled away from him. Just that fast the early morning lust seemed replaced with fear again. She’d wanted it. She’d done it. Surely now as fantasy material she could—
He startled her by laughing. “Backtracking, are you?”
She stumbled over her words as all the panic and planning and fear that had built up, like stage fright, flooded back in. Her stomach twisted. Once, yes, she’d managed it one time. That was enough.
“David, I loved it. It’s just, I’m sure it’s just a game to you and I can be happy—”
But he’d made a sort of conciliatory sound and pulled away from her, crossing the room to fetch the laptop and bring it back to the bed.
“David?”
He held up one finger, scrolled a bit, and turned it so she could see the screen.
Gwen’s own face filled the screen, her eyes half open and as distant, dreamy and dazed as anyone’s she’d seen at the party. She couldn’t remember when the shot was taken but she knew, as he clicked through, she’d been attached to the cross, David using the crop on her and someone else taking pictures he’d had to get permission to take in the first place. When he got to the end of them, she eased the computer off his lap and started going through them again, seeing a Gwen she didn’t remember being, remembering something she hadn’t quite understood the first time around. She felt warm, glowing, safe and content. She nodded, and knew he understood why she nodded, and she didn’t look away from the screen. Her face, flushed. Ecstatic. Full of lust.
Gwen smiled and made plans for the future.
