Siegfried motioned the other folks to step back and leaned down to help me up. “Who is it, Professor?” His blue eyes flashed into mine. He steadied my arm.
I stared at the remains of the man who’d been missing from our little town since the previous fall. “I’m afraid it’s Colin Springer.”
A collective gasp went up among the small crowd gathered at the edge of the trench.
I stood rooted to the spot, staring into the trench unearthed by the most unexpected means. An electric tingle of weakness flooded my body. I moved back a few feet to take stock and replanted my feet on the wet wheat to steady myself.
The mystery surrounding Colin’s disappearance had been laced with much speculation and a good measure of spiteful comments. There had been talk of money being mishandled, and people often whispered about Colin having deserted his wife, with further gossip of him living in the Caribbean with another woman.
The only companion he lay beside now was the cold steel of his hunting rifle.
How had a day hunting in the woods turned so tragic? And who had buried him in this field?
I swiped at a buzzing horsefly that persistently tried to land on my head, and shuddered to think his body had been buried only a few hundred yards from our church the whole time .
Had it been a hunting accident? Maybe someone panicked and buried him out here at night, figuring no one would ever find him.
Until a rogue twister touched down.
I shivered, nodded to Siegfried, and we trudged back to the church.

Reviews
You’ve just finished Upstaged , book 2 in the LeGarde Mystery series. If you enjoyed it, I hope you’ll consider leaving a review. It doesn’t have to be long or fancy—just a few lines about what you liked best or how the book made you feel is perfectly fine.
Authors really do read the reviews and love to hear what their readers think and feel about the characters, the story, or the writing. It’s validating, especially if you enjoy what we work so hard to produce!
Thanks in advance for taking a few minutes to write a review. ;o)
