And then, the first day they saw sunlight, they all squinted and closed their eyes. It was snowing. Danny felt the cold dots first, and cried. Thomas sucked in his breath. Ellen slept through, and Grace smiled.
Then all four of them slept in the van on the way home. There weren’t many other cars out because it was Christmas Day and people were at home opening presents.
Ellen was the first to see the house they’d grow up in—and someday bring her own babies home to for Christmas. She, along with her brothers and sister, didn’t get to see their room right away, though.
Daddy plopped little Santa hats on their heads, put them in little baskets under a huge tree that was all lit up with pretty colors, and took their picture.
The picture became famous. A card company bought it and it went all around the world with the caption Merry Christmas, Babies.
Mommy and Daddy got richer and had clients all over the country and lived happily ever after.
