Blood Heavy (Blood Heavy Series)

Roach reached down and grabbed Steve’s hand, holding it tight. “See you on the other side man,” Steve just smiled at him. Roach got back up and went to check the other door to the lab and make sure it was clear.
“I’m sorry,” Goose whispered.
“For what?” Steve asked, honestly not blaming him for a single thing. “Do me a favor, check in on my folks for time to time...it’s gonna be hard on them,” he said, a few tears escaping his eyes. He hated to think what this was going to do to them.
Goose nodded, trying to hold back his own sadness. Joe walked past him and pulled out a grenade. He pulled the pin on it but kept hold of the spoon and carefully handed it to Steve. “All you gotta do it let go...good luck kid.”
“Shouldn’t be too hard...”
“Come on Sarah, time to go,” Joe said. She was still holding onto him and weeping into his shoulder.
“No.”
“Sarah, you gotta go, baby,” Steve whispered.
“I’m staying,” she said simply.
“No, you’re not. Go!”
“I’m not leaving you!” she declared. Her voice was shaking and her eyes were red, but there was conviction there. She loved him more than anything, and if he was staying, so was she. “You guys get going.”
“No, Sarah! You’re coming with us!” Goose yelled.
WHAM!
There was a sudden smash at the door and the barricade began to fall apart. They were coming in.
“Go, go now! Move!” she screamed.
“No! I’ll drag you outta here if I have to!” Goose yelled.
“If he’s not going, I’m not going! You have to get out now! You have to protect Jerry!” she screamed back with tears running down her cheeks. “There’s something inside him that needs to be saved, and I’m not talking about his blood. Something saved him in that hospital and it did it for a reason. He’s special...save him.”
WHAM!
Joe had to actually pull Goose away and the four of them rushed to the second door. It led to a second biology lab which they moved through as quickly as possible. They checked the adjoining door before opening it and moving through.
Sarah sat down next to her boyfriend and gripped his hand with the grenade in it. She held on tight while resting her head on his shoulder. “I love you,” she whispered. It wasn’t supposed to end like this for them. They were supposed to get married and live a long happy life. She had dreamed about it so many times before that it had become more of a pre-written plan than just a hope.
That was never going to happen now. But if they were going out, they were going together.
WHAM!
Another hit smashed more of the barricade apart and buckled the hinges of the door. She held Steve even tighter and kissed his cheek. It was only then that she noticed his head was drooped down and his eyes were closed.
“Steve...baby?” no response. She burst into tears and clutched his hand harder. “It’s okay...it’s okay...I’ll be there soon...”
WHAM!
The barricade exploded apart and the door flew off its hinges, smashing into one of the desks. A huge hulking vampire walked through, his eyes reflecting the low emergency lights. It was Devlin. He was flanked by his little Goth, Sasha.
A moment later, eight other vampires entered the room behind them, all grinning, their fangs showing as they saw the lost lovers’ embraced. Some of them actually laughed. They moved over and surrounded them.
The smile on Devlin’s face suddenly vanished as he caught the scent of something else lurking beneath Steve’s blood.
“Gas!” he growled.
It was Sarah’s turn to smile now. “Bite this, you ugly son of a BITCH!” she let go of Steve’s hand.
Devlin and Sasha made a running dive for the window, but not before the grenade exploded and ignited the gas tanks. The entire classroom went up in a ball of fire which incinerated the vampires and blasted Devlin and Sasha outside into the pouring rain.
They rolled around on the ground in agony as third degree burns covered most of their bodies.
About a hundred feet away, Joe, Goose, Claire and Roach turned to see the explosion engulf that section of the school and light up the night sky. They had made it outside and were running through the downpour, heading for the car park.
A biting pain rang through Goose’s body, as he realized his friends were dead. He hadn’t really thought about how this night might turn out, but never in his darkest nightmares would he have believed something like this could happen. Steve and Sarah were gone. It just didn’t seem possible.
“We gotta move! Now!” Joe said, snapping Goose back to reality.
He turned to run for the car park, but didn’t get so far as a foot. Something hit Joe so hard, it sent him flying ten feet through the air before he collided with the ground. Goose raised his weapon, but he was also struck before he could get a shot off. He flew backwards and hit a tree with a horrible thud. Before his eyes glazed over, he caught a glimpse of giant bat-like wings.
Selena.
Roach opened fire on her, but she spun around behind him and with one slashing movement, she ripped his back open with her nails. As he fell to the ground, Claire pounced on her. She landed at least three punches, but none of them fazed Selena. She was too powerful.
She slammed Claire in the chest smashing her backwards like a rag doll, causing her to lose her Ginsu knives. She landed near Goose, who was starting to regain consciousness because of the rain on his face.
“Where do you think you’re going?” she teased and started advancing on Claire.
She shifted backwards and tried to get to her feet.
“Where is he Claire?” Selena asked, almost looking excited.
Joe crawled over to Claire and Goose and pulled his sidearm from its holster. He unloaded straight at her, but he might as well have been firing a BB gun. The bullet holes in her body healed up instantly and she continued to move towards them.
Suddenly, something she didn’t expected happened. Roach dived on her back and began shoving one of Claire’s Ginsu knives into her side while screaming, “Is that all you got bitch?!”
Selena growled as she tried to grab hold of him and pull him off. Her wings flapped all over the place, but she couldn’t reach him where he was. He continued to stab wildly at her in every place he could. “Go! Get out of here!” he yelled.
Claire jumped to her feet, grabbing Joe and Goose in the process. She dragged them away as quickly as she could, while Roach continued to go slash frenzedly at Selena’s back.
Suddenly, she kicked-off the ground and into the air, spreading her wings out. She rose at least thirty feet into the air before slamming back down into the ground. It was enough to finally shake Roach off her back and send him falling to the deck. Powered by insane adrenalin, he got straight back up and ran at her with the Ginsu blade in hand, but she was too fast.
She sent her right arm at his chest so hard, she punched straight through his rib cage and into his body. Blood sprayed from the hole in his chest as he fell to the ground with blank eyes. She snarled at his pathetic attempt to attack her and then licked his blood off her hand. She spat it straight back out instantly.
“Junkie!” she hissed and then blasted herself back into the air.
As soon as she was up, she got a fix on Claire, Joe and Goose, thanks to a streak of lightning that shot across the sky illuminating the whole area. She swooped down and landed straight in front of them.
They all moved backwards, but they couldn’t run from her. Goose gritted his teeth together as he saw Selena’s blood soaked hand. She had killed Roach, she had killed Parker and Steve and Sarah. She didn’t care if she killed him too; she just wanted to make him suffer.
“Now, where were we?” she grinned.
Goose started moving towards her, but Claire forced her way in front of him.
“Just tell me where he is and I’ll let you all go,” she smiled.
“Go to hell!” Goose yelled.
/>
“Funny, that’s what the other guy said, right before I ripped his guts out,” she grinned. “Haven’t you people gotten the message yet? You can’t beat me!”
WHACK!
Selena was suddenly smashed round the face by a metal pole, causing her to fall backwards and look up in shock.
“Maybe not, but I can make you uglier, bitch!”
It was Cassandra.
She was standing there with what looked like a road sign pole she’d ripped out of the ground. Her clothes, face and long brown hair were soaked with rain, but she still looked beautiful and ready for a fight.
Selena immediately noticed that her eyes weren’t glowing anymore. “You’re not all hopped up on his blood this time Cass,” she growled and got to her feet.
“Who says I need it?”
Unfortunately, Joe and Goose had been rendered pretty much useless at this point. They’d lost their heavy weapons and Joe was down to his last few rounds for his pistol. Claire stepped up and took a position next to her sister.
“Well, isn’t this sweet. The White sisters, back together again,” Selena chuckled.
There were no more words. Cass and Claire launched themselves at Selena. It was almost as if they could read each other’s thoughts, because they moved in perfect balance. Claire took her from the left, while Cass went for the right. Selena was way stronger, but they were still making it difficult for her. As soon as she went for one of the sisters, the other would land a hit.
Cass continued to smack her with the pipe while Claire landed high kicks into her face. They were tough as hell on their own, but together they were incredible. Selena couldn’t seem to keep up. She swiped at Cass with her wings, but Cassandra just somersaulted over them and landed behind her.
Another barrage of hits from the sisters flew at Selena, and their movements became so fast they blurred. Joe took aim with his pistol, trying to get a clear shot at Selena’s head, but she was moving too quickly.
He fired but the bullet sailed past her. He tried again, but again she dodged it. Selena’s eyes suddenly locked on Joe and she broke away from her fight with the sisters. She shot straight for him, but before she could get there Claire tackled her. It was the opening Selena needed.
She grabbed Claire by the throat and slammed her into the ground so hard it sent a small tremor through the dirt and left an impact crater. Cass rushed to her sister’s aid, but Selena managed to grab hold of the pipe and pulled it from her hands. Cass laid a punch into her face, but it barely stunned her. Instead, she suddenly grabbed Cassandra by the arms and kicked off from the ground.
Selena’s wings opened up and she flew through the air, holding Cass in front like a battering ram. She went straight at a tree smashing Cass’s body into the trunk. Cass let out a gargled scream. A branch was stuck straight through her shoulder.
Claire weakly picked herself up and turned to see Selena snap the branch off and ready it to strike at her sister’s heart. “NO!” she screamed, but the stake never came down.
Selena had frozen in place. Slowly her head turned and her eyes locked on the source of the incredible fragrance. Blood was dripping from a boy’s hand.
“Hey bitch. Remember me?”
Jerry had arrived.
CHAPTER 24 – LIGHTNING ROD
Newton High School – St. Cloud
“No! Jerry, run!” Joe screamed, but was ignored as the pureblood let go of Cass and turned.
Jerry and Selena stared each other down. Both of them were smiling.
“There you are,” she purred.
“You look thirsty Selena...need a drink?” Jerry smirked.
“Honey, you have no idea,” she licked her lips.
Suddenly, she launched herself at him, wings outstretched and arms reaching forwards. Jerry didn’t move. She rocketed towards him with incredible speed, just as he pulled the sawn-off double rifle from behind his back and took aim.
BOOM!
The sound echoed louder than the thunder and the recoil forced him to take a few steps back. The .700 Nitro Express round caught Selena in the chest and sent her shooting backwards so hard and fast that she slammed straight through the wall of the high school. He had missed her head.
With his ears ringing, he couldn’t help but look down at the gun and say: “Whoa...”
He immediately rushed over to the others. They had pulled Cass off the tree and were holding her up.
“How is she?” he asked, while reloading the empty barrel of the sawn-off.
“She’ll be okay. We’ve gotta get out of here!” Claire said instantly.
“Jerry, I’m so sorry,” Cass cried in pain.
“I’m not,” he said simply. He brushed her emotional state away as if he were swatting a fly. He had bigger fish at that moment. “Where are the others?” he was looking to Goose for that answer, but his best friend couldn’t find the words.
His lips pressed together and he shook his head.
The crushing realization washed over Jerry, but was instantly replace by pure uncontrolled fury. “SON OF A BITCH!” he yelled at the top of his lungs. He gritted his teeth together and tried to focus. His friends were dead, he had to stop Selena. He had to end this now. “Get her out of here, I’ll lead her off.”
He jumped up, but Joe grabbed his arm. “Jerry, wait!”
“No! She’s all mine!” he growled and shoved his arm away.
He ran at full speed towards the car park where the Boss was waiting. “COME ON SELENA! COME AND GET ME!” he taunted as he went.
He got to the Boss and fired up the engine. She growled to life and the wheels screeched as he pulled out of the car park. A second later, the wall of the school exploded and the winged vampire shot out. She completely ignored the others and went straight after Jerry.
He gunned the gas and pushed the car up to a hundred, speeding down the wet streets straight past a bunch of cop cars with sirens and lights blaring. They swerved and jolted as Selena flew past them.
He flicked the windscreen wipers on full as the rain poured against the glass. The slippery roads were making the car hard to control, but not impossible. He shifted gears and put his foot down, bringing her up to one thirty. In the rear view mirror he saw the monster’s wings flapping hard as she flew to catch up with him.
He didn’t have time to be safe about it and took a hard right causing the wheels to spin out. He rolled the steering wheel over, struggling to regain control. He managed to line her up again, as Selena pressed forward. She was less than twenty feet behind him.
Jerry turned again, this time on a smoother corner. He was heading towards the river. The sound of screeching metal rang out, followed by a thump on the roof. She was on the car.
Without thinking twice, he turned the wheel hard left causing the Boss to spin around. It was enough for Selena to lose her grip and fly off. She steadied herself in midair and shot back after him. Jerry pulled the hand break and turned the wheel right, regaining control.
He shoved his foot down on the pedal and sped up again, but so did Selena. She climbed higher into the sky, then dive bombed straight at him. She swooped in over the roof of the Boss and grabbed hold again. This time she dug her hand into the metal and began ripping the roof off.
He had to think quickly and the only idea that came to mind was an insane one. He had no choice.
“I'm sorry baby!” he said to the car, before pulling out the sawn-off and pointing at the passenger side under the glove compartment. He fired and the bullet shot straight through the metal and into the tire, blowing it out.
He pulled the hand break, turned the wheel over and grabbed hold for dear life. The Boss buckled and flipped over into a roll. Glass smashed and the frame groaned as the vehicle went out of control. Selena was crushed as the roof hit the ground. The car flipped over four times before coming to a rest.
It had landed on the wheels, but the poor thing was completely destroyed. Very slowly, the driver side door opened and Jerry fell out. His head was
busted open and blood was all over his face, but as far as he could tell he didn’t have any broken bones. He tried to get to his feet, but felt dazed and groggy.
He looked over to see Selena still lying in the middle of the road. She was in way worse shape than him, but he could already see that she was healing. The bones in her wings were snapping back into place and she was starting to move.
“Ahh, will you just die already!” he groaned.
His eyes scanned the area, telling him exactly where he was. A few yards away, rising into the sky, was the Apollo clock tower that they drove past everyday on their way to school. It was the only thing resembling cover at the moment, so he ran towards it as quickly as he could after grabbing the sawn-off and the shock machete from the car wreckage.
