“Oh-kay,” Trent says, breathlessly. “I thought you had a plane to catch.”
“I did…I mean, I do.”
“Then what are you doing here?”
“Funny,” I smile and inch closer to him. “I was just asking myself that very same thing. I said, ‘Becca,” my mouth trembles. “What are you doing driving away from everything that’s ever meant anything to you?’” I gasp. “And then I opened this box that this wonderful guy gave my Aunt to give me.” I show him.
“You weren’t supposed to open that until you were gone.”
“Which I know wasn’t supposed to until I was gone. But technically, I was gone.” I jerk my head. “And inside it, I found this incredibly sweet message, from the same incredibly sweet guy, along with this incredibly awful cupcake—” I hold it up.
“That bad, was it?”
“No, actually, it tasted pretty good, it just looked like crap—which surprised me, considering it was vegan. You must give me the recipe. Anyway, I thought to myself, ‘self,” I ramble on, “clearly this man has no idea how to make cupcakes, you can’t possibly leave him now. After all, who better to teach him how to make a cupcake than myself?” My arms swing out at my sides. “So, here I am.” I shrug. “That is, if… you’ll still have me.” I blink.
Tossing aside his mop, Trent charges across the room, after doing a two-hand spring over the countertop mind you, and scoops me up into his arms. Crushing me to his chest, he envelops me in the warmest, richest, most ravenous kiss I’ve ever experienced.
What remains of the cupcake tumbles from the box.
“You had me at hello,” he whispers to my mouth, still kissing me.
“But I didn’t say hello.”
He brushes the hair from my eyes. “You never have,” he says, drawing me back into the trance of our kiss.
