“Love never fails.” She whispered through the tears that insisted on falling yet again.
“That’s a promise from the best Authority,” Russ said. He turned her around, and they made their way toward the lodge.
Miss Angie stood outside the big, oak doors, watching their approach. The wash of sparkling sunbeams caught her hair and turned it into a bright halo. A dancing breeze toyed with her long, white skirt, moving the garment in graceful waves around her ankles. For a moment, she appeared to float a few inches off the ground. Behind her, two large shadows wavered on the side of the lodge.
Dalynn gasped and pointed. “Look, Daddy! Miss Angie has wings.”
Russ’s low laughter sounded a little uncertain. “Kinda looks like wings, doesn’t it, princess? But it’s just shadows, honey, that’s all. Just shadows on the wall.”
Miss Angie smiled. She took the child in her arms and whispered something into her ear. Dalynn’s eyes widened. One little hand flew up to cover her mouth, and she giggled.
Autumn opened her mouth to ask about the exchange and then closed it. She looked at Russ. His eyes reflected a wonder that she knew must also be displayed in her own. He gave her waist a little squeeze, and they followed Miss Angie and Dalynn inside.
“I have a ‘return to Paradise Pines’ gift for you, Autumn.” Miss Angie pulled a small box from one of the folds in her voluminous garment and placed it in Autumn’s hand. “Open it, dear.”
Autumn lifted the lid. Inside, a bracelet made of silver links lay nestled on a velvet bed.
“It’s for your charms. I hope you like it.”
“It’s beautiful, Miss Angie!” Autumn hugged the woman.
“When your little blue friend delivers God’s next love letter, the bracelet will be complete.”
“Oh, he already brought it…but you knew that, didn’t you?”
The woman smiled, and the sweet sound of an angel choir filled Autumn’s head. She blinked and looked at Russ. He and Dalynn both stared at the ceiling with puzzled expressions.
Autumn’s gaze flew to Miss Angie, who patted her cheek and leaned in close to whisper into her ear. “Love never fails, my dear. Love never fails.”
