Heart of a Runaway Girl

It was late morning, and Mabel was working the counter of the diner when the phone rang. “It’s for you,” Kevin called out from the kitchen.

Assuming Kerry was calling to let her know she was still at Lisa’s house, Mabel picked up the phone and offered a cheery, “Hi, dear!”

The man on the line sputtered. “Oh, hi Mabel.”

Mabel smiled and said, in her singsong voice, “Lavi! Good to hear from you. I thought my niece was calling me.”

“Ha ha, no worries there. How are you doing?”

She looked around her diner, with her customers content and Fred and Hector doing their homework, and said, proudly, “Just fine.”

“Good,” he said. “Because I have a case for you.”

Mabel scoffed. “Lavi, I’m done with all that. I’ve got lots of work to do.”

“I know, Mabel. But it’s about a girl. Sixteen and a runaway. But it’s not the girl I’m representing, it’s the mother. She attacked a police officer when he refused to believe her daughter was in trouble, and now she’s frantic. She’s a poor, single mother and hasn’t got anyone to help her. If I can prove the police were negligent on this, it might help reduce her sentence some. But that’s not why I’m calling. She wants her daughter back, and I can’t help her there.”

Mabel leaned against the counter for strength, saddened to hear about another girl in trouble. “I’m not an investigator, Lavi. There are better people than me out there.”

“No, Mabel. You’re my best,” Lavi said. “I want you to take it.”

  Mabel struggled to decide.

“Mabel?” Lavi prompted. “Will you take it?”

Mabel opened her mouth to speak but then looked upon her children, with their heads down studying together, and they looked so beautiful. Her heart ached, and then she knew.

  The End.
