Danny Rivas - He is a solider fighting for the HBCS (Hybrid Biohazard Countermeasure Service) who is in charge of rescuing survivors in New York City. He is in a squad with Istvan Ginovaef and Nicolai Putin. He believes he is ordered to rescue survivors, but when he meets Maria he finds out the true nature of the mission and begins to question whether he is a pawn to Hybrid. At first Maria and he don’t get along, but as they work together Maria eventually trusts him. It’s Nicolai he begins to lose his trust with. Armed with an assault rifle, he can clear out a horde of zombies easily. He can take more damage than Maria can and he can move heavy objects that she might not be able to move. He is a spunky fellow who tends to flirt a lot even if the situation doesn’t call for it. However, he is a team player who puts others over himself. He is from the Dominican Republic.
NPC’s (Non-Playable Characters)
Istvan Ginovaef - A member of Danny’s squad led by Nicolai. He is from Zagreb, Croatia and is a tough cookie who will try to complete his mission no matter what condition he’s in. In fact, he would rather sacrifice his own life to save those on his squad than back away from a challenge. That would end up being his downfall.
Nicolai Putin - Also from Croatia, he is the leader of the Bravo team of the HBCS. With gray hair and a heavy Slavic accent, Nicolai looks to be middle aged around 45. Unlike Istvan, Nicolai tends to think only for himself and that begins to concern Danny. He tends to be arrogant and quite bullish in attitude when it comes to talking to others. Nevertheless he does provide vital information to Maria and tells her what Hybrid plans to do to her hometown. However as the adventure deepens he begins to become secretive and it turns out that Maria learns the many dirty secrets this man is hiding. Some of which will leave her breathless…
Bill - Angel’s mentor during the events of the second book, he is the one that saves Maria in the second book. A middle aged man, he is rather brave but his age is starting to show. He meets Maria once again. However, he has no time to catch up with her. He is being chased by Hybrid’s newest weapon, Nemesis. Eventually the story doesn’t end well for him as he becomes Nemesis’s first victim.
Richard - A Hybrid Corp. supervisor, he was one of the only “clean” supervisors who tried to expose Hybrid for their sins. He wanted Hybrid to operate like they said they would and actually help mankind instead of destroying it. He is ordered to Cypress Hills to gather live data on the creatures, but he tries to take pictures to send to the FBI. He is spotted by a member of the HBCS and is shot for dead. Richard realizes that the person who shot him is a traitor and the HBCS along with its members are done. He spots Danny and is ready to reveal the person who shot him before he is shot dead by the assassin.
The Mystery Pilot - This is the man who rescues Maria and Danny before the missile hits. Maria recognizes the man and thanks him, but never spoke to him by his name.
Other Characters
Rita - A young police officer that Maria meets in the 75th precinct. She is in her 3rd year as an officer. She helps heal Maria when she takes a painful zombie bite. She warns Maria that she will probably end up the lone survivor of the outbreak. After heading out of the dark room, she becomes the second victim of Nemesis.
Charles Dickerson - He was the undertaker of the undertaker of the funeral home that was located inside the popular bell tower of Cypress Hills. According to his journal he was a nice man and really cared about taking care of the bell tower. He would safeguard the important things through puzzles throughout the Bell Tower. He would end up dying only a month prior to the third outbreak.
Angel - Maria’s Husband, he is the one responsible along with Luis in uncovering Hybrid’s true nature. Maria searches for him only to find out that he’s on a dangerous mission to Croatia to Hybrid’s HQ to expose them up close and personal. He has taught Maria everything she needs to know about defending herself.
Bernard - An ex employee of Hybrid, he was a scientist of Hybrid before finding out what they were really up to. He was disgusted that he put in his resignation quietly and began to talk with the FBI. However they did not believe his story, he considers suicide when he figures Hybrid would have him killed for quitting. Maria doesn’t know that Bernard died in the police station back in the second adventure.
George Fisher - His full name is George T. Fisher and he is the janitor of IS 302 J.H.S. He comes from a well respected German family in Cypress Hills. He, Maria and Angel got along very well. What people don’t know is that at night and on weekends he was an investigative writer for the Cypress Hills tabloid. To make the long story short, he found out the president of the tabloid was making secret dealings with Hybrid to keep the underground lab and reservoir plans a secret. In fact, George was ordered to not write about the second outbreak in detail. George knows what Hybrid has been up to as he was probing in the underground laboratory and got a glimpse of the lab in the reservoir when he was captured by Hybrid. He broke out and was determined to destroy Hybrid with the evidence he had gathered. Hybrid knowing he was a dangerous man and was friends with Angel and Maria ordered Nemesis to kill him in the school where Maria attended Junior High School.
Tyler - He is from Canada and is killed by Nicolai after being exposed to the Broken Arrow virus. He was a member of the HBCS Alpha Team.
Matthew - A member of the HBCS Alpha team, he meets Danny in the hospital. He is African-American and in his lower 30’s. While the two get along well, they don’t have much time to bond. That’s because Matthew gets his head bitten off by an ivy.
Creatures
Zombie - Your basic lost undead human that has been infected by the Broken Arrow virus. They come in many forms, from police officers to naked flesh. Once a human become a zombies they only have one mission, eat the brains of a person who is still alive.
Zombie Dogs - These dogs act like regular dogs, except they have a bigger appetite for human flesh. No use keeping these canines in your house!
Flea Drainers - Somehow the Hybrid Corporation managed to test on fleas as well. These fleas have grown in size ten-fold and they now have deadly claws used to slash their victims. Their signature move is to get on their victims and suck the blood out of the neck area.
Web Spinners - These huge spiders only look dangerous, they are dangerous as well. They can tackle their victims and kill them with their huge legs. They can also spit a poison spit causing the victim to become dizzy and vomit. The poison is capable of putting a stop to a person’s organs causing them to die.
Fleshers - They are humans who were exposed to the Broken Arrow virus so much that they lost their ability to walk and see. They also lost their skin and only show their flesh. However, they make this up by having the ability to crawl up walls and sonar hearing. They also have a sharp tongue that can cut anything like butter except metal. Also, they carry a dangerously sharp claw that is able to slash a human being in seconds.
Lizarda - A fellow creature from book one. This is a mutated lizard that has grown in size and is able to walk on two feet. With its deadly claws and agility, it’s a formidable adversary. You cannot afford to blink you eyes even for a second if you see this creature. One false move and the next second you will lie in a pool of blood possibly beheaded.
Frogger - Just like the lizarda in its nature, only in the form of a frog. It has an extra ability, which is to eat a whole body without any effort. This creature is found mostly by environments where there is water.
Neptune - A mutated shark that was being researched inside the lab located in the reservoir. It never made it past the experimental stages, so it was left in a tank only to be scrapped later on.
Ivy - A huge plant that is able to walk slowly using its vines to grab its victims. It can spit a toxic spit poisoning its victim. Its huge mouth makes it able to bite of a human head in only one bite. It’s susceptible to fire as its genes still represent that of an actual plant. Its slow speed prevents it from being classified as anything more dangerous.
Bosses
Nemesis - The main boss of
the book, although it makes its appearance as a mini boss chasing Maria, Danny, and the other survivors. It has the appearance and has similar traits to Mr. Z from the previous two adventures. However this particular Mr. Z has been exposed to 10 times the amount of the Broken Arrow virus than the others. Instead of a red trench coat, it wears a black trench coat. Unlike the pale face of Mr. Z, Nemesis has a fleshlier and mutated look to it. It has a tentacle on its left hand and is capable of inserting the Broken Arrow virus into the host. Unlike Mr. Z it has faster movement and is harder to run away from. It can also use its tentacle to grab its victims and throw them around. It’s basically an improved version of Mr. Z. It always seems to be calling out Maria’s name and is chasing her around. Nemesis has been programmed and sent to kill everyone that puts Hybrid in danger of being exposed, which includes Maria. Imagine an enemy that will stalk you non-stop and is almost impossible to kill off, that is Nemesis.
Giant Earthworm - A mutated Earthworm that has grown into a giant. It’s capable of digging itself underground and popping out. Its huge mouth makes it able to eat anyone in one swift bite. Finally, it can shoot off fire from its mouth burning its victim to ashes. The Earthworm is found in the flower garden in middle Highland Park.
Appendix B
Weapons, Pickups, and Basic Gameplay Topics
Weapons
Pistol - Maria’s basic weapon that was given to her by her husband to help her defend herself against possible thieves. Now she must use it to defeat the many Hybrid creatures roaming her hometown. The weakest of the guns, but is highly accurate and best for zombie head shots. There is an upgraded model that has a scope and makes it easier for Maria to land head shots.
Shotgun - A great close ranged weapon, not so much for long range. The shotgun takes a long time to shoot, so not the best weapon for faster creatures. The shotgun can be improved with shotgun parts that are found during a battle with Nemesis that can increase the power and tighten the spread of the blast for increased accuracy.
Grenade Launcher - A powerful explosive weapon capable of blowing up enemies. Rounds come in four flavors. They are your standard rounds that shoot off a conventional explosive round, great for clearing out a huge horde of zombies. However, they are not as good against the experimental creatures or bosses. The second is the flame rounds, which are good against ivies and Nemesis itself. Not recommend vs. Zombies. The acid rounds are good against experimental creatures and Nemesis, not as good against zombies who are less affected by acid. The final type is the Freeze Rounds. They are a special kind of ammo capable of freezing enemies. Effective against ALL enemies, however creatures do not die of hypothermia.
Survival Knife - Also given to Maria by Angel, this is used for those sticky situations that require fast action. While it should not be used as a primary weapon, it can be more useful than a gun in certain situations. Note: Danny also carries a knife.
Colt Python Magnum - A classic six-shooter magnum. It is capable of dealing a high amount of damage to the target. Maria encounters this weapon during the final battle vs. Nemesis.
Assault Rifle (Danny) - The standard SMG assault rifle that is issued to all HBCS units. It’s capable of shooting at a rapid pace, making it perfect for a huge horde of zombies and fast enemies.
Incendiary Grenades (Danny) - These grenades are capable of letting out high heat and burning the intended target. Useful vs. ivies and Nemesis.
Gunpowder
Gunpowder A - When loaded into a reloading station and the reloading tool it gives out pistol ammo. When combined with Gunpowder C it gives out acid rounds.
Gunpowder B - When loaded it gives out shotgun shells. When combined with Gunpowder C it gives out flame rounds.
Gunpowder C - It’s created by mixing A and B together, it’s rare to find a jar already made. When loaded it gives out standard grenade rounds, can be mixed with Gunpowder A and B to created the other grenade round types. Or it can be mixed with another jar of Gunpowder C to create Freeze Rounds.
Health Pick-Ups
Green Herb - When used it heals one condition up. For example it heals from Caution (Level 1) to Fine or from Danger to Caution (Level 2)
Blue Herb - Heals Poison Condition, can be combined with a green herb to heal health as well.
Red Herb - Useless by itself, however when combined with a Green Herb it creates a mix that can heal the person back to full health no matter their condition, minus the special conditions such as Poison. It’s considered the rarest herb in Cypress Hills.
First-Aid Spray - Heals up to full health when used
First-Aid Kit - Contains three first first-aid sprays. Another rare find, only two exist in the book. There’s one in the end of the game and another after a Nemesis battle.
Vaccine - Found in the hospital, its used to heal Maria from the effects of the Broken Arrow virus.
Health Conditions
Fine - Normal Health, little to no injury.
Caution (Level 1) - A few minor hits that an herb should take care of.
Caution (Level 2) - The character has taken a significant amount of damage and needs to find healing items. The character is about 2-3 hits away from death.
Danger - The character is only 1-2 hits away from death, healing is paramount at this point.
Special Conditions
Poison - The character has been poisoned and will continue to lose health at a slow pace until a blue herb is found and used.
Burned - A special condition where the character has been burned and will lose health quickly until they can find water to cure the condition.
Virus - Only occurs when Maria has been infected by Nemesis by the Broken Arrow virus. Can be only cured when Danny finds the vaccine.
Note: There are several alternative endings to the story… Those will be coming soon in a separate time!
