Luca smiled. “Was Silas wrong? Did you not indeed call the whole pack and make them shift while still in human form?” Without waiting for an answer, he continued. “I have a very clever wolf called Gabriel that’s working through all our old books. I understand that some Alphas had very specific gifts in years gone by. Nurturing the pack was one of them, and those types of gifts naturally come by seem to have been forgotten in the rush for gold.”

  “Sire—” Alpha Senekal started.

Luca ignored him. “Sam?” he addressed his beta. “How many people did we encounter making their way here?”

  “Seventeen, Sire,” Sam answered promptly.

  “And why were they coming?”

“Because they have heard the Alpha doesn’t turn anyone away,” Sam replied with a smile.

“There you have it then.” Luca stood up, depositing Gia into Caleb’s arms and brushing cookie crumbs from his pants. “Sounds like a gift to me. You are clearly an incredibly gifted Alpha with no need of an omega.”

Caleb shot a look at Taegan.

“Sire?” Taegan started to clarify but Luca interrupted him again.

“I have very specific goals for Askara. The most important one is that both species — wolves and humans — learn to live together. Human and wolf matings are not only allowed, they are encouraged.” His lips twitched. “I have it on authority by one of my advisors — between me and you she’s only fourteen but is running rings around wolves seventy years her senior — that in the future it won’t matter what people are born looking like, what pack they belong to, or even what species.” He took a breath. “It will be who they are not what they are. Labels are adequate for cooking ingredients not people.”

Hope unwound the tightness in Caleb’s chest. For the first time in what seemed like forever, he could breathe.

“Oh, and my mate says you are invited to the coronation next month. Children very welcome,” he added, and with that Luca beamed and strode outside to where a gamma was holding the horses. “I would stay but we are meeting Christoph Tor in a few hours, and he will be preparing dinner for us.”

The rebel leader? Caleb was entirely sure by this time nothing the King would say was going to shock him.

“So, unless you’re desperate for a ceremony, let’s just say you’re the ruling Territory Alpha and have done with it.” He looked at Sam. “I can do that, right?”

Alpha Senekal threw up his hands in defeat and announced to the nearest servant that wine should be served now, and muttering, he left the room. Taegan strode towards him and took Gia from his arms. He hadn’t even noticed the little boy had fallen asleep. He laid him on the couch and covered him with a blanket.

Then he held out his hand waiting for Caleb to clasp it. He didn’t keep him waiting. Taegan pulled him from the room and beckoned a servant, asking her to tell Renee where Gia was. He then turned and practically dragged Caleb up the stairs until they were safely behind a closed door. He held out his arms and without hesitation Caleb walked right into them.

“I don’t believe it,” Caleb whispered as he nuzzled Taegan’s throat.

Taegan tightened his arms. “You’re the Alpha,” Taegan confirmed. “By royal decree,” he teased, gently pushing a knuckle under Caleb’s chin and lifting it.

“Which means you’re the Alpha-mate,” Caleb grinned. “I believe you are in charge of approving all ceremonial robes, cleaning schedules, furnishing replacements, and a weekly conference with the cook to discuss dinner menus.”

Taegan chuckled. “I’ll get Mom right on that.” He sobered and looked at Caleb. “Are you sure? You don’t know what you might be turning down.”

“I was giving it all up for you anyway,” Caleb replied.

“I know. I heard you. Half the pack heard you.”

“I know that means they might not think I care, but it was the exact opposite,” Caleb said quietly. “You have my heart. You have from the very first, and if you leave you will take it with you. I can’t love the pack without it.”

Taegan smiled and bent his head. He patted his heart. “Safe next to mine,” he murmured just before his lips met Caleb’s, and Caleb sighed happily knowing it was exactly where it should be.

  The Alpha King

The Kingdom of Askara has been torn apart by conflict for centuries, where humans exist as subservient beings to their werewolf masters. Legend says it will only be able to heal itself when an Alpha King and a pure omega are mated and crowned together, but a pure omega hasn’t been born in over a thousand years.

Luca is an Alpha-heir eagerly awaiting the choosing ceremony on his twenty-fifth birthday and the gifts granted by whichever omega he mates. His small pack is destitute due to the decisions of its ruling council, but being only an Alpha-heir, he has no authority to challenge them. Not until now — this moment he has waited a long time for.

Kit grew up as a street-rat, an unlicensed human who would never be more than a slave for whichever master owns him. Then one day he came across a young Alpha-heir, attacked and dying of poison, and found out their fates were suddenly entwined.

Luca needs to take over his pack and save his people. He cannot afford to be distracted. But when he meets Kit, he develops abilities indicating he is not just a pack Alpha, but the King his world has needed for a thousand years.

Is Kit really the cause of Luca’s newfound power, the true mate he needs? How is it possible when the young man isn’t even a werewolf, and as merely a human, a mating is not only forbidden, but for Kit, a sentence of death?
