In other words he will kill them or do something very bad. “That is the only warning you’re going to get.”
“Produce the kid and I be on my way.”
“Let them go, William.” I demand.
Chapter 20
“Now why would I do that? This is so much more fun.”
“William you are never going to get your hands on the child.” Lazarus states.
“If I don’t get the kid, then these two will bring me a lot of money.”
“Let. Them. Go.” I grit out.
“Adrian. Is the chopper ready?”
“Yes Sir.”
“Good. See you on the flip side, Ty.”
“William. If you make one more move I’ll blow a hole through you.”
William holds Jessica in front of him. Blocking any kind of a shot. He and Adrian back away slowly. I aim down the barrel of my gun. I squeeze the trigger slowly. Before I can fire, he pushes Jessica into me. I catch her before she falls. Adrian throws Aaron over his shoulder carrying her to the chopper. Lazarus fires hitting Adrian in the leg. It doesn’t slow him down. Quickly pushing Jessica to the floor. I fire twice at William clipping him in the shoulder.
“Damn it!” I roar.
Lazarus and I run out after them. I fire one more time hitting William in the leg. Adrian climbs in the pilot’s seat lifting the chopper off the ground. We don’t shoot anymore. If we hit the chopper then Aaron could die in the crash. How the fuck did I let him get away again?
“Son of a bitch!” Lazarus yells.
“This can’t be happening.” Not only did he take Aaron, but they disabled Lazarus’s chopper as well. Parts and pieces are scattered all over the ground. If we want to get off this mountain we will have to fix it. I run back in the house where Jessica is sitting on the floor looking…shocked. I kneel down beside her. “Honey are you okay?” She doesn’t look at me. She doesn’t even acknowledge that I’m even talking to her. “Jessica?”
“I remember everything. Some of it anyway. He took me from the hotel that I was supposed to meet him at. We were going to work on a project. I was going to be making a hell of a lot of money from it. He had different ideas though. He was going to sell me to a guy. I don’t know his name. Vancard bought me instead. I overheard a lot. Vancard didn’t know, or at least I didn’t think he did. That’s all I remember. I think they are the ones who tried to kill me.”
“William. Did William take you?”
“Yes.” She starts crying hysterically.
“Jessica. I need to know where Sara is.” I know she is having a meltdown right now, but I need to find Sara.
“S…She’s still in the room. We locked her in. They said they would blow us up if we didn’t come out. A...Aaron and I gave ourselves up. I…I didn’t want her too. I was going to go out alone.” She continues to cry.
Lazarus comes in. “Take care of her. I have to get Sara.”
He nods his head taking Jessica in his arms. I run to the den and pull the lever. The door opens and I run down the hall to the small room. “Sara honey. Its Daddy open the door. Can you do that?” Silent meets me. I try again. “Munchkin. Will you open the door?”
Suddenly the door opens and Sara throws herself in my arms crying. “I didn’t let them in daddy. When Jessica and Aaron walked out I locked the door. I wouldn’t let them in. I’m scared Daddy.” She buries her face in my neck.
“It’s okay honey. You’re safe. You did really well. I love you sweetheart. I won’t let them hurt you.” But I did. I let them get close, I promised that I wouldn’t and I did. I take Sara in my arms carrying her out of the room.
Once I’m back in the living room. I wipe the tears out of her eyes and off her checks. She kisses me on the cheek. “I love you too Daddy.” She hugs me again.
“I’m so sorry honey.” I say to Sara. She snuggles into me hiding her face. She’s shaking all over. Looking over I notice that Jessica isn’t doing so well either. She is trembling and mumbling. Lazarus is holding her tight trying to soothe her. I’m at a loss here. I don’t know what to do. Sara pulls away from me enough to look me in the eye. “Is Jessica okay?”
“Sure honey she’s just scared. Just like you. She will be okay.”
“They hurt the puppies, Daddy.”
“I’m sure they are okay.”
“No I heard them. They hurt the puppies.” She cries harder.
Walking over to Jessica, I take Lazarus’s place by her side. “Lazarus you want to check on the puppies?”
He stands walking out the now splintered front door. I wait until he walks out before I turn my attention back to Jessica. “Jessica honey. There was nothing else you could do. You did great. You kept them for getting Sara.”
“They have Aaron. It’s all my fault. I should have done something.”
“There was nothing you could have done.” I know exactly how she feels. I didn’t protect them like I should have.
“Yes. They could have taken me instead. I could have done something.”
Sara wraps her arms around Jessica hugging her tight. They have been through more shit than they should have had to encounter and it’s all William’s fault. Sliding to the edge of the couch I contact Tango.
“Ty. Where the hell are you? William has left the mountain heading east. We have people after him.”
“Lazarus and I are on the mountain. We came up the back way. They have Aaron. I shot William three times. Twice in the shoulder and once in the leg. He and his pilot are injured. I don’t know how badly they are. We need to get Aaron back.”
“Damn it. How the fuck did this happen?”
“You don’t think I tried?”
“I’m not blaming you, Ty. He is a tricky bastard. But don’t worry he’s injured. If the pilot is smart he will land close. They will have to take care of their wounds before they continue.”
“They disassembled the chopper it’s going to takes us a hell of a long time to repair it.”
“Where is the back entrance?”
“You can’t come up that way. Lazarus has land mines set.”
“Son of a bitch!” Tango roars.
“How the fuck did they get past everything in the first place?” I question.
“I don’t know. Can I land a chopper up there?”
“Yes.”
“It will take some time to get another one. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“Ty!” Lazarus yells.
“I have to go. Keep me informed of the progress up the mountain and get that chopper as quickly as you can.” I say to Tango.
I run out of the house to where Lazarus is bent over one of the puppies. He is bleeding from his side. “They fucking shot him!” Lazarus is furious.
I run back into the house heading to the bathroom. Grabbing an arm load of towels I take them to Lazarus. Sara and Jessica are right behind me. They have finally stopped crying. “Sara honey I need you to stay back okay.” I don’t want her seeing this. Jessica wraps her arms around the front of Sara holding her..
Lazarus applies pressure to the wound of the puppy. I help Lazarus carry him inside. “Jessica clean off the table in the kitchen.” Lazarus orders.
Sara and Jessica run inside to do as told. Once we are inside we lay the Puppy gently down on the table. We uncover his wound, it doesn’t look good. There is a giant hole and he is bleeding badly. I apply more pressure to the wound as Lazarus grabs his tools. We are all trained in the medical field. So we will have to do surgery on the puppy.
“Baby. I need you to keep Sara in the other room. She doesn’t need to see this.” I inform Jessica.
“Come on Sweetie. Ty and Lazarus will fix the puppy up. He will be as good as new.” She throws a worried look at me.
“Daddy.”
“It’s okay honey. Go with Jessica. Everything will be fine.” I go for a smile that I’m in no way feeling.
She and Jessica go in the next room. Lazarus returns with his tools. We fix an IV in the puppy’s leg putting him to sleep. Lazarus tak
es the plyers extracting the bullet from the puppy’s side. I look in the wound making sure it didn’t hit any vital organs. Once I’m satisfied that it didn’t. Lazarus sews the wound after cleaning it. “He’s going to be sore and won’t be able to move around. I’m going to keep him sedated for a little while.”
“Where’s the other one?”
“He’s fine. I found him hiding in the bushes.”
“How the hell did this happen? How did they get up here?”
“I wish I knew.”
How the hell did they know Sara was here in the first place? They would have had to track her or something. “Shit. Why the hell didn’t I think of that before?”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Lazarus looks at me confused.
“They knew Sara was here and how? They have a tracker on her. William was one of us once. He thinks like us. What would you do if you had someone worth a fortune and you didn’t want to lose them?”
“Son of a bitch. That’s how he knew. He fucking tracked her.”
“We need to find that tracker.”
After patching up the puppy and making it comfortable, Lazarus bring out his tracking device. It will find the tracker on Sara. “Sara, Jessica.” I call out to them.
Sara comes running with Jessica limping behind. “Is the puppy okay?”
“Yes honey. He is just sleeping. Come her sweetheart.” I lead her by the hand to stand in front of Lazarus while he scans her for the tracker.
Sure enough there is one just below the skin on her right arm. “What is it Daddy?”
How will I tell her that we need to take it out? That if we don’t William will only come back again and again until he succeeds. “Honey. Do you remember how you got this?” I ask her gently.
“No.”
“Okay.”
I look to Lazarus. He and I both know we are going to have to put her to sleep to take it out. I just don’t know how to tell a six year old child what we are about to do. She won’t understand. She is so small and fragile. I don’t want to do this. I wish there was another way. “Ty. We have to get this out.”
“Sara honey,” I say getting down to eye level with her, “Lazarus and I need to take this out.” I point to the tracking chip.
“How?” She whimpers.
“Just like we did Max.” I point to the puppy.
“Oh.” She says looking scared.
“It won’t hurt. I promise. It will be like taking a nap. It will be okay sweetie I’ll be right by your side.”
“I don’t want to Daddy.”
“Jessica and I will be right by your side.” I repeat.
She wipes her eye with her hands and I hug her tightly. “Sara. If you want I can sit beside you while your daddy and Lazarus takes it out.”
“We won’t leave you. I promise.” I whisper in her ear.
She wipes her eyes again and nods her head. I take her hand and sit on the couch beside her. Lazarus brings out his kit and inserts the IV in her arm. “Ouch.” She cries.
“I’m sorry honey. I promise it will take it out before you wake up.” Lazarus reassures her.
After a few minutes she closes her eyes. Jessica and I lay her on the couch and extending out her arm so I can take it out. My hands are shaking and I have to take a second to calm myself down. I make a tiny incision with the scalpel. Lazarus gently pulls the tracking chip out dropping it in a cup. The incision is so small that I can put a band aide on it. It doesn’t even bleed. Lazarus pulls out the IV and we wait for her to wake up. Jessica smooth Sara’s hair from her face so loving. I can tell she really cares about Sara. Hell, we all love Sara. I can see there is a connection with her and Jessica though.
It isn’t long until Sara’s eyes pop open. “Hey Munchkin. How are you feeling?”
“Good.”
“That wasn’t so bad was it?”
She shakes her head no. I sit her in my lap holding her. Lazarus takes the tracking chip in the den. I’m sure he has a plan for it. Jessica sits down beside us. I take her hand in mine and just hold it. I feel as if I have let them down, especially Aaron. I’m stuck on this mountain and no damn way to get off. There’s no word from Tango yet and the chopper. I feel helpless.
“Stop beating yourself up. It wasn’t your fault.” Says the woman blaming herself for William taking Aaron.
“Aaron is fragile. She won’t be able withstand the things they will do to her.” I know Aaron and I haven’t gotten alone after our divorce, but I still care and I don’t want to see bad things happen to her.
“She’s tougher than you give her credit for.”
“I hope your right.”
“Ty. Come look at this!” Lazarus yells from the den.
“I’ll be right back.” I set Sara down beside Jessica.
“Look at this.” Lazarus says turning the chip over.
“Why is it glowing?”
“It’s something new. I’m guessing when they want to find out where she is they hit a button and the thing lights up.”
“So they are trying to track her now?”
“That’s what I’m thinking.”
I smile. “Let’s bring William to us. As long as he doesn’t know Sara isn’t carrying this around with her anymore, we can lure him in.”
“You took the words right out of my mouth.” He laughs.
“Tango is trying to get a chopper up here.”
“Good. I don’t think William is going to go too far away. Not as long as he thinks Sara is close by. He’s going to come back.”
“Yeah and when he does we will be waiting.”
Chapter 21
Jessica
When William came crashing in the bunker. I’ve never been so scared in my life. Aaron and I had held them off as much as possible, but when they had threatened that they were going to blow us to hell, well I believed them. I should have called their bluff. I should have known they wouldn’t do that because Sara was in there as well. I opened the door intending to be the only one to come out, but then Aaron pushed out as well. I made sure that Sara locked the door behind us.
William and his men threatened to hurt us unless we gave them Sara. No way was that happening. The memories came flooding back when I saw William’s face. Who knew that was all it would take to start remembering everything. He grabbed me by the arm forcing me to the floor. Aaron tried to scratch out his eyes, but he swatted her away like a fly. William is a big guy and scary as hell. I tried to fight back, but the man named Adrian slapped me hard. Shooting pain seared through my injured arm and leg. I felt the burning and ripping of my tissue.
William tied Aaron’s hands behind her back and her feet together. She fought with everything she had. I kicked Adrian with my good foot he only laughed. Once they had us at their mercy they started questioning us about Sara. Punching me in the stomach and slapping Aaron around, we still didn’t tell them where Sara was. No way was I going to let them take her. Ty and Lazarus came alone just in time. I thought they were going to kill us.
“Jessica?” Ty waves his hand in front of my face.
“Yes. Sorry.”
“Come on let’s get you some cloths.”
He, Sara and I walk to Ty’s room. He digs through his bag coming out with a pair of sweats and a huge t-shirt. I won’t complain because I’ll take whatever I can get. I’ve been running around this house, I don’t know how long, in a sheet. “Can I grab a quick shower?” I must stink to high heaven.
“Sara honey do you remember when you and Aaron made brownies and you used the plastic wrap to cover them. Could you please get it for me?”
Sara runs out of the room. “What are you going to do?”
“Make sure you don’t get your bandage wet.”
“Oh.”
“Here let me help you.” Ty turns on the shower making sure it’s the right temperature.
He unties the knot I have made in the end of the sheet. Sliding it down my shoulder. His hands graze my skin. His touch feels hot and electrifying. He
looks into my eyes and I see wanting there. He leans in close to my lips.
“Daddy. I found it.”
Ty jerks his head back quickly. I pull the sheet over my breast. That was close. I sure don’t need to be doing this anyway. So in a way I’m glad Sara interrupted us. Ty looks over his shoulder smiling at Sara. If I’m not mistaken I can see a light blush covering his cheeks.
“Great. Thanks sweetie.” He clears his throat.
Ty kneels down on his knees parting the sheet at my thigh. The bandage is a little bloody. It must have broken lose again when we were running from William. Instead of taking off the bandages he takes the plastic wrap wrapping it around the bandage. Once he is satisfied that he has enough to keep it from getting wet, he tears it off.
“Wait here.” He demands.
Sara and I watch as he leaves the bathroom. “Are you going to take a bath?” Sara looks up at me.
“Yes. I think I need one don’t you?” I smile at her.
“Was Daddy kissing you?”
What? That question caught me by surprise. What do I say? “Umm…Umm…” I swallow.
“Got it.” Ty comes back in the room holding duct tape and not a minute too soon.
“What are you going to do with that?”
“This will hold the plastic wrap in place.”
“Oh.”
“Daddy. Daddy?” Sara tugs on Ty’s shirt.
“Yes sweetie?”
“Was you kissing Jessica?” She make a funny face.
He looks at me with the same expression I had worn when she asked me. “Umm… What to help me Munchkin.” He avoids her question.
Sara gets down on her knees holding the plastic wrap while Ty rips off strips of duct tape. Gently placing the small strips on the plastic wrap, he makes sure they are secure enough so they don’t fall off. He does the same thing to my injured arm. After he is satisfied with his handy work he and Sara leave the bathroom. Finally dropping the sheet to the floor I step in the warm shower. It feels as if I haven’t washed my hair in months. I lather it twice. Making sure it’s clean, I condition it, running my finger through the knots. I take my time washing the rest of my body. I find a razor and save my legs and the rest of the body hair that has grown since I have last shaved.
