Gerrard: My Autobiography Page 42

by Steven Gerrard

Home fixture My mum loves looking after my girls.

Next generation My brother Paul’s boy Louie was born last year.

Beautiful My life changed when Lilly-Ella was born.

Sweet It was a wonderful moment when Lexie was born.

Three lionesses Alex Curran has changed my world, settling me down and giving me two beautiful daughters.

Side By Side Alex and the girls make me so proud.

In Safe Hands Having my family close by during the World Cup was a real help.

Helping Hand Gérard Houllier was my manager, mentor and father figure at Liverpool.

Team-mates And Soul-mates Jamie Carragher and I share a passion for lifting Liverpool to great heights.

Looking At What Could Have Been Jose Mourinho is a brilliant manager but I decided to resist Chelsea’s lure

Demolition Derby I pile into the Blues’ Gary Naysmith and see red.

Arms And The Manager Rafa Benitez continues to inspire and challenge me

The Guv’nor And The Gladiator Paul Ince and me get told to cool it

The Treble, Step One Beating Birmingham City’s Stan Lazaridis to win the Worthington Cup in 2001

The Treble, Step Two Me, Danny Murphy and Robbie Fowler celebrate the FA Cup final win over Arsenal.

The Treble, Step Three Shooting to thrill, I batter Alaves’ defence in the UEFA Cup final.

Silver Service Me, Robbie Fowler and Sami Hyypia bring home the Treble.

No Focus In Basle Off-field distractions brought misery in Europe.

Shooting Star I needed all my strength to break down Olympiakos’s defence at Anfield and keep Liverpool on the road to Istanbul.

Mission Impossible? The half-time score-line in Istanbul made bleak reading in the 2005 European Cup final.

Heading For A Comeback I climb high to make it 3–1 and give us hope against AC Milan in Istanbul.

PENALTY! The real fall-guy is Milan’s Gennaro Gattuso as he brings me down. Xabi Alonso scored to make it 3–3.

Mission Impossible Accomplished After an unbelievable final, I get my hands on the European Cup.

Back Where It Belongs Me and Rafa Benitez land with the European Cup. That’s Liverpool’s fantastic chairman, David Moores, on the right.

Wave Of Euphoria So many people came on to the streets of Liverpool to see the European Cup that our bus could hardly move.

Letting Fly I had just enough energy left to make it 3–3 in that amazing 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham in Cardiff.

Romance Of The Cup I have always loved the FA Cup and lifting it as captain was a schoolboy dream come true.

Capped Crusader I will always be grateful to Kevin Keegan for giving me my England debut in 2000.

National Service Sven-Goran Eriksson did me a great honour by making me England captain against Sweden in 2004.

Friends Re-united Give me the ball with England and I will find Michael Owen, my old Liverpool team-mate.

Power And The Glory Not a bad way to open my England scoring – against Germany in the 5–1 win in Munich.

All Smiles Me and Wayne Rooney hit it off immediately with England, on and off the pitch.

French With Tears My pass-back against France at Euro 2004 gifted the ball to Thierry Henry, who inevitably scored.

Up For The Challenge I was determined to get England off to a winning start at the 2006 World Cup, which we did by beating Paraguay 1–0 in Frankfurt.

Left In No Doubt Not my strongest, but my left foot found the target in the 2–0 win over Trinidad & Tobago in Nuremberg.

Happy Days I’ve scored in Nuremberg, Wayne Rooney is back in the team after injury, and all appears right with England in Germany.

Mersey Dash Frustrated at being on the bench, I finally sprint on to replace Wayne Rooney against Sweden in Cologne.

Head Master Shortly after coming on in Cologne, I net my second goal in the 2006 World Cup from Joe Cole’s cross.

In With A Shout After making it 2–1 to England with five minutes left in Cologne, I was convinced we’d beaten Sweden but Henrik Larsson equalized.

Big Appeal My passion for England to do well in the World Cup was immense.

Spread The Word I join in the celebrations of David Beckham’s second-round winner against Ecuador in Stuttgart, helped by Ashley Cole, Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.

On The Move Here I lead the charge against Ecuador in Stuttgart.

All For The Cause I slide in to stop one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s long runs in Gelsenkirchen.

Down And Out I can’t hide my despair after England’s penalty shootout defeat to Portugal as Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and Frank Lampard try to take in our bitter exit.

All Played Out I couldn’t move from the centre-circle after the shootout in Gelsenkirchen, just sitting there shell-shocked.
