“I’m a fire starter. It’ll never work.” She felt the muscles along her torso stiffen in preparation for his agreement.
“I love barbecue,” he teased. “Swear, you can fire that thing up every day.”
She laughed when he continued.
“We can bedazzle the whole house with blue crystals, if you say yes.”
“Even the bedroom?” The tension left her body like cheesy goo sliding from a frying pan in a late night infomercial. Nothing stuck to her, but hope. It soared in her heart and the magic of love started to ripple over her skin…transforming her.
“Especially our bedroom,” he laughed, picking her up off her feet. “You know the drill, legs around my waist.”
She took it one step further and looped her arms over Nathan’s head. He jerked when the cold metal settled on his neck.
“Payback?” he grumbled.
“Not hardly, cowboy.” After being alone and rejected for most of her life, having Nathan’s love and acceptance obliterated the pain of those dark years with the magic eraser of true happiness.
He regarded her through half-lidded eyes and she felt his growing erection against her inner thigh. “The campground probably rented my spot.”
“You park the RV at the house and move in. Besides, Adam is one of Rachel’s minions. He’ll report back everything he pretends not to hear to the godmother.” Nathan’s laughter boomed in the small cell, shaking the foundation.
“Prince Charming is asking the princess to shack up?”
Nathan frowned and she giggled. This close, she could feel their hearts beating in time. She loved him… and he loved her.
“Zachary men are the marrying kind. You’re mine forever, so tell me you’re coming home, Blue.”
“Yes, I’m coming home.” Symphony had a home and the man she loved to share it with.
He blew out a breath. “Good, Rachel’s busy adding sparkly stuff to your gown for tonight’s ball.”
“Don’t I get a night off?” she teased. “After all, I’ve been framed, arrested, shot at, and almost burnt alive… twice.”
“Not a chance, Cinderella. I’m taking my hot li’l number to the ball.”
Symphony’s heart swelled beyond capacity as she regarded her prince charming. “Do I have to wear the cuffs?” she asked with a raised brow.
“Only if you want to,” he grinned.
And just like that, all the red faded to downy white with a glittery backdrop. Symphony surrendered to Nathan’s strength when he cradled her head in hands and covered her mouth with his.
Epilogue
6 months later…
Nathan stared out at the land in front of his home. Eyeing the Coachmen parked next to his boat trailer brought a smile to his face. He could smell dinner cooking on the stove and he wanted to finish his project before the sun went down.
“What are you working on?”
Symphony stood in the front doorway leading to the porch, wearing one of his shirts. The top three buttons were open, like she’d thrown it on in a hurry to reach him. Her four-legged shadow, Max, was right behind her. Nathan liked the image and wouldn’t have it any other way.
“A new piece for our bedroom.”
“You, Captain Jack Sparrow, now, hand-carving your own trunk?”
“Nothing that thematic, it’s something I dreamed up a few months back.”
Nathan watched as she stepped forward to run her fingers over the wood.
“It’s nice, but we have enough money to buy a house and furniture for the next fifty years,” she hummed.
“I’m glad you think so,” he grinned. “I wanted to make this for you with my own hands.” Nathan opened his arms. Symphony walked into his embrace without hesitation and his heart turned over.
“You’re too good to be true,” she said placing a kiss on his forehead.
When he palmed her bottom she moaned. “Dinner will be ready soon, so don’t start anything we can’t finish,” she joked. “And I want to visit Adam before my singing lesson.”
“You don’t need singing lessons to scream my name, Blue.” She ignored him and he loved that she still made him work for the taste of heaven only she could give him.
“What is it?” She pointed at his project.
He avoided her question. “I noticed your cigars in the trash.”
She started to squirm. “Yeah, well, I haven’t needed them in months. Smoke is bad for my health, anyway.”
“And for the baby.”
Symphony gasped, but she squeezed him tight, like she could never let him go. Time seemed to stop. Nathan held his breath, still in awe that this beautiful woman wanted him as much as he wanted her. That she loved him enough to overlook his flaws and offer him a chance at true happiness.
“You know?”
Nathan could hear the emotion in her voice, and it made him love her more. “I know your body inside and out, Little Blue.”
“You happy about the baby?” she sniffed.
“What man wouldn’t be happy to learn his woman is pregnant with their first child? Yeah, I’m happy. This dresser will be big enough to hold yours and the baby’s clothes.”
Symphony buried her face in his chest, “You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”
With that simple statement, his arousal roared to life. He settled her bottom on his legs, placing a hand over her baby bulge.
“I love you, Blue. Can’t wait to have a few babies crawling around the deck with fishing gear and a fire hose.”
“For real?” Symphony’s voice sounded tiny against the rustling nighttime.
“Real,” he said, lifting her chin until their eyes met, “and forever.”
“I love you, Nathan Zachary.”
“You better, Symphony Porter Zachary,” he smiled down at his wife. “Now, do you want a tour of the chest or our bedroom?”
“Both,” she grinned, claiming his mouth with hers.
