Then he got down on a knee.
The crowd let out a collective gasp, but Sydney barely heard them. Her heart was in her throat, pounding hard enough to echo in her ears.
Cam took her hand gently. “The first day we ever talked, the day you came out to the ranch on a field trip, I said something to you when you left. Do you remember?”
She nodded, unable to speak as tears slipped from her eyes.
“I said you were worth it. You still are.” He smiled and opened his hand. In it was a slim, elegant engagement ring with a small single diamond, sparkling in the light of the street lamps. “I loved you that day, and every day since. I’d like to love you for the rest of my life, if you’ll have me.” He drew a shaking breath. “Sydney Davis, will you marry me?”
“Yes.” Her voice broke on the word, and she reached out to touch his face. “I love you,” she said. “I’ve always loved you. And I always will.”
He slipped the ring on her finger, and the whole town cheered.
Sydney’s face heated instantly. “I forgot they were there,” she half-whispered. “Oh, God. We’re going to be gossip fuel for weeks.”
Cam straightened, wearing a wicked grin—and scooped her off the ground.
She laughed breathlessly. “Put me down,” she said. “I told you, this is not dignified.”
“No, it’s not. But I figured if they were going to talk anyway, I’d give them something to talk about.”
“This is going to be on YouTube, too.”
“And? So is this.”
He leaned down and kissed her.
She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him back, ignoring the explosion of cheers and whistles. The only thing that mattered was holding her tight, making a ridiculous spectacle out of himself—and not giving a damn what anyone thought. Because he loved her. He always had. And he’d saved her not just from Tommy, but from herself.
There would be no New York City for her, no leaving her family and friends behind. Everything she ever wanted was right here.
She’d never really left it…but she’d finally come home.
