“Go change out of your uniforms,” she shouted. “Give me a minute, and I’ll be in to get supper started.”
They headed for the front door and disappeared from sight.
What was she going to do about Burt? She couldn’t live with him even another day, and in this century, it was illegal to simply kill his stupid ass. What then? What were her options?
She looked straight at Tobias Moiré and smiled. “I’m going to walk through that door and feed my children, and then, later tonight, after Burt’s asleep, I’m going to pack up myself and my kids, put us all in this car, empty all the accounts, and find a new place to live until I’m free to take myself and my children to Alaska. I divorced the creep once. I can certainly do it again. It’s just, this time, I’ll be a whole lot smarter about it.”
Fate chuckled. “So, he doesn’t frighten you anymore?”
Beth shook her head. “If living with Quinton taught me anything in the almost fifty years we were married, it’s that I have no reason to fear anything or anyone. He helped me understand I’m strong, smart, and capable. Burt Anderson is in for a very big surprise when he wakes in the morning.”
“And after you rid yourself of your deadbeat husband? What then, madam?”
Beth thought for a moment and smiled. “First, I’m going to raise those two little boys to be fine, honorable men, the same way Quint and I raised our children. And then, I’m going to sit back and enjoy the show as they fall in love and marry. I’m going to bounce a brand new set of grandbabies on my knee. And when the good Lord does sees fit to call me home, I’m going to run straight into Quinton MacLeod’s waiting arms when he meets me at Heaven’s gates. After all, he did tell me not to hurry.”
Tobias Moiré, third generation event manipulator, better known as Fate, began to shimmer. “That sounds like a splendid plan, madam, and I do wish you luck. But for both our sakes and just to play it safe, I implore you, please stay out of Scotland.”
With a tinkling of laughter upon the wind, he was gone.
Beth opened her car door, breathed in a lungful of muggy Miami, Florida, air, looked toward the heavens, and blew a kiss. “We’ll be back together before you know it. I love you Quinton MacLeod, and I love our family, our entire family with all my heart, and I always will.”
She sighed. “But right now, there are two little guys inside this house who need their mommy more than you need me to take a stroll through Heaven or even upon the surface of the moon, and I know you understand that better than most.”
Beth smiled. “I also know that, of all the people who’ve lived in any time period ever, you’re the one who understands best when I say, I am a MacLeod and I will hold fast.”
She straightened her shoulders, stiffened her spine, put one foot in front of the other, and headed into the house. It was time to get the next chapter of her gifted, very unusual, completely blessed life started.
