Crucial thanks to Courtenay Harris Bond, Becky Cassler Fearing, Chaitali Sen, and Kim Wall. Erin McGraw’s generous advice on an early draft of this novel caused it to pivot. Thanks to my teachers Alice McDermott, John McPhee, and Edmund White, and, for friendship and encouragement, Max Abrams, Katya Andresen, Joyce Carter, Gregory Cohen, Justin Cohen, Jane Delury, Marian Heiskell, Lizzie Skurnick and the whole W. Amherst book club (and you’d see this nice mention, guys, if you ever finished a book).
Tanya Ramos’ lucidity and bonus emotional intelligence have enriched these pages, as well as my life. And thanks to my colleagues—Conch has nothing on them—particularly Karen Albright, Nichole Armstrong, Trish Carrington-Adkins, Keryn Lane, Lisa McQuiston, and Abigail Seligsohn.
I am grateful to my parents, Bonnie and Jay Cohen, for so much love and practical support. To my favorite disruptors, my sons: thank you for your many ideas on how to improve this book by adding car chases. Your input on vehicles went far beyond what I needed, but thank you.
And lastly but most of all, unfathomable gratitude to James. This book is for him, and never has an honor carried with it more obligation to provide childcare. His generosity, encouragement, and partnership have made so much, including most of the good parts of this book, possible.
