I ride back to the house thinking about the kids. The pussy had them thinking they were meeting Drake, but he was already dead. I shower and walk over to Sheila's. Walking in, she smiles up at me from the floor where she's signing to Stella. “She picked up five more words today. At this rate the boys will be a better teacher than I am.”
I laugh and sit by her. “Jason come by?” He was pretty low when Prez was done with him. He did chain him to the yard and read him up and down for putting himself and the Teams in jeopardy.
“Yeah. He's sorry for what he did. I'm glad Prez talked to him. I won't ever have to worry about him pulling that shit again.” She signs, 'Jax' and points to me.
“I'm proud of you for taking that from him today. He wouldn't have been able to deal with it.”
She smiles at Stella and signs it again. “No. He's trained, but he's not meant to run with anything but IT.”
Stella signs, 'food.'
I kiss Sheila and stand up. “I can cook or take you to dinner.”
“I ordered Chinese. It should be here at six.”
I nod walking into the kitchen for a beer. It was a good day. We found the killer and stopped the pussy from hurting more kids. I look out her back door. She's got a nice set up. We all do, but I like her trees and walkways around her garden. I look at the deck. It's got a toy box.
“Suzy homemaker did you know they got a toy box on the deck?”
“In your dreams and no, I haven't been out there.” She comes up behind me with Stella in her arms. I move and she looks out. “Fuckin’ sweet!” She walks right out making me smile.
I get her a beer and sit on a lounge chair. She gets Stella settled with toys and sits with her legs hanging over the side in front of me. I reach down and pick her beer up handing it to her.
“I like this.” She smiles up at me.
I do too. I throw her chin thinking I had no problems with kids and her taking Stella shows all that I've ever thought about her. She'll do whatever it takes to help the hurt.
Chapter Nine
Two weeks
Sheila
I walk out of therapy smiling. She thinks I've made good progress and is letting Prez know. Jax has been coming up behind me and I don't freak the fuck out. Life is definitely looking up. Now if I could get him to touch me, in all the places that want to be touched, life would be fuckin’ great. With him at my house every damn night I get no chance for any kind of relief. I need that relief. He's treating me so sweet and his kisses leave me wanting to feel those hands and lips all over me.
I make the Center as Eliza is walking out. “We got a call.”
I switch my helmet on and hear PD dispatch rogering Eliza and letting the PD team know we’re their backup. We're sent to the same fuckin’ house as last time. “I got back.” PD isn't here yet, but this pussy had a gun last time.
She nods and rides to the side of the yard and parks her bike. I go right to the back stairs.
“On the porch ready to knock,” she whispers.
“Roger.” When she knocks I open the back door and run. The pussy is shooting this time. At the living room I stop with my gun pointed at his head. “Let the boy go.” He swings his arm and the kid swings back hitting the wall. I shoot the bastard. The woman screams and I want to shoot her. “She Dog clear.”
I move to the boy and tell the woman to shut the fuck up. “Kicker?” I ask while I pick up the gun. I need to get this kid out of here.
“Yeah.” Her answer is clipped.
Fuck. I lift the boy and open the front door. “Fuck. I need a medic.”
PD turns in the driveway. Nice of them to show.
“It's just flesh.” She's holding her side just above her hip bone.
I bend to set the boy down but he won't let me go. PD walks by me and I shake my head. “Perp shot, I just got the kid out.” I take her helmet off and look at her face. She's good and I'm relieved. I sit and pull my shirt cutting a strip off the bottom and hold it on her. Jessie shows. The woman is getting louder with her crying and we all ignore her.
Jessie smiles. “Transport is on the way.”
“I just need a Band-Aid, I'm not going to the fuckin’ hospital for what amounts to a boo-boo,” Eliza says making me smile.
The little boy laughs then we do. An ambulance shows and two shots are fired. I cover the boy and Jessie covers Eliza. Pushing the boy behind me I lean into the door gun first. Jessie walks right in. He's fuckin’ crazy.
“Call Driscoll,” he says.
He pulls Margie out of the house. She wrenches her arm away and leans toward me. “You left the gun in there! You have no fuckin’ training! You don't belong in PD!”
What the fuck? She's screaming as if I'm a yard away. I pull the pussy's gun and hold it in my fingers. “Got the pussy's gun. You didn't show to your fuckin’ call and yell at me? I told you I shot the perp and got the boy out. Get the fuck away from me before I shoot you!”
Jessie pulls her away and she starts crying. Eliza looks at me. “You did right Sheila, she's in the wrong here and needs someone to blame.”
I nod, but I'm fuckin’ pissed. The EMTs walk into the house. “My partner needs a Band-Aid.” One looks at me and keeps walking. I move the boy to Eliza and walk in pointing my gun while I open the case and get the fuckin’ Band-Aid myself. Assholes.
I clean her up with alcohol wipes and put some cream on her then the Band-Aid. Driscoll shows and waits until I'm finished. “You okay Eliza?”
“Yep. Right as rain.”
I laugh. He looks at me. “You have the cam on?”
“Always.” He nods and goes back to his truck. I flip my mic on. “She Dog to HS Ops; Driscoll is going to call for my feed.”
Josiah: “Roger She Dog.”
Jessie motions us to come away from the house. I take the boy's hand wondering what the fuck is going to happen to him.
Driscoll walks to Margie and says something low. She starts screaming about me a-fuckin’-gain. “One more fuckin’ time and I'm shooting her ass.”
“You didn't respond. You walked in and didn't secure the scene, didn’t check the woman for a weapon. You watched your fuckin’ partner get shot then watched the shooter turn the gun on herself never drawing your weapon. Explain to me how this is someone else's fault. She told you she shot the perp and got the kid out. Securing the scene was on you.” Driscoll's voice gets louder with every word. He puts his hand out and takes Margie's gun.
“Thank fuck!”
Jessie laughs and pulls me closer giving me a man-hug. “You did good Sheila. If she was fuckin’ trained, we wouldn't still be here.”
Eliza agrees and I'm relieved. Driscoll looks at me. “Justified. Good fuckin’ job.” I throw him chin and he looks at Jessie. “The old officers need more fuckin’ training. I'll talk to Prez.”
“Some just need to be replaced,” he says looking at Margie.
“Yeah.” He walks closer and I put the pussy's gun in his hand. “I've got transport coming for the boy.” I nod. He bends and talks to the kid. I have no idea what to do here. Since it was a PD call Driscoll is in charge. I guess we stay until we're dismissed.
I walk to the back and get my bike pushing it beside Jessie's. Eliza does the same. I hope this gives someone a hint for us to leave. Darren shows and I roll my eyes.
“Shit,” Eliza says turning around.
Jessie laughs. “His glasses pick up everything.”
He checks to see if she's good and tells us to get to Security. We do with smiles. In Ops we wait at the back. Prez is talking to Dakota and Abel on Air Ops. Waiting in here is never a problem for me. I like watching the boards while we wait.
Prez hands his mic to Josiah and walks to us. “You did good. VP is there because this shows bad for the PD. While HS looks good here, it's a problem for Princes all the same.”
“I don't think it is Prez. She was old PD. If we fired every officer and replaced them it would have been a problem. We kept some and weeded
out the bad. Poor training would show on them not us. A two week re-train wouldn't show anything but new procedures.”
Prez takes that in and we wait. “That will work. I'll get Dakota to work a statement in case it comes up.” He looks at Eliza. “You good?”
“A little sore, but I'm okay. It was just flesh.”
He nods, but has something running through his head. We wait. “Outside town five, a meth house is up and running. We have an Op scheduled in a little more than an hour. Get something to eat. Eliza you'll run a lead at control.” We nod and he walks back to Josiah telling him to get Jax on his headset.
Eliza looks at me. “Deli?”

Jax
“I'm going to need someone full time if I keep getting pulled into Ops.”
He looks at me for a couple of seconds. “Are you looking to go back on Ops full time?”
Am I? I think about Sheila and Stella. I like how things are working right now. “Not yet.” He nods smiling.
Jessie, Eliza, Dakota, Sheila and Taylor come in. Sheila slides a grinder toward me. “Thanks, Bella.” I know it's an Italian.
She laughs. “No fuckin’ way.”
I eat while Prez gives us our jobs and we go over the maps and movements of each team. Looks easy enough. We get our guns and ammo and I kiss my girl before we get our helmets on. “Why isn't Eliza running?”
She waves her hand. “She got shot earlier and Prez sidelined her.” She's not happy with this.
“She got shot earlier.” I need to make sure I heard her right, it was an offhanded comment.
She looks at me. “Yeah flesh. Pussy shot through the door.”
“Where were you?”
“Shooting the pussy.” She puts her helmet on and starts her bike.
I shake my head. They've been running all day and she's already killed a man. She went to eat and came back like it's an ordinary day and her partner gets shot. I fuckin’ love her. Eliza asks for check-in and we all respond. The whole way there I'm thinking about Sheila and how this all happened. She's a Brother through and through, but her sweet is so fuckin’ deep.
It takes less than an hour to get the house clear of people then Dakota blows it up. Fire has been hosing the grass and trees the whole time. We're called back to Security and told to go to the Club. I look at Sheila not sure what to do. “Jess has her.”
I nod as we pick up our clean guns. I guess we're going to the Club. I can't get the thought out of my head. I've never felt this way and Patches' lists don't cover talking to your woman unless you’re in bed.
I hold her hand walking in the Club. She asks if I'm okay and I smile at her wondering if I am. Dakota laughs behind me. “He is wondering if you are all in too.”
My head snaps around. I can't believe he just fuckin’ said that. She squeezes my hand and I look at her. “Yes.” She pulls me through the door and Dakota laughs. Holy shit!
“Wait!” I stop her and wait for the fuckin’ nosy bastard to walk by. He laughs slapping my shoulder. “Yes you're all in? I'm trying to figure out what the fuck I'm feeling and you're all in?”
She looks at me and I think she's going to hit me. “If it's a fuckin’ problem for you either get over it or walk away.”
She turns, but I don't let her go. I lean down. “It's not every fuckin’ day I'm hit with this. I love you are not words I say. Give me a fuckin’ minute to get it and we're good. Throwing bitch at me isn't the way to handle this and you are not walking the fuck away. All in means you find the common ground and deal.”
She looks up at me. “You're against my back and I haven't shot you. I think it's safe to say I found the common ground.” She turns. “I love you too. Let's get this fuckin’ done and maybe I won't be wishing you slept at home so my vibrator gets some action.”
She pulls me in the fuckin’ door. Jesus. I'm hard and she's drinking a beer with the Brothers. Shouldn't we be talking or something?
Dakota slaps my back laughing. Fuckin’ readers. “Relax Brother. It is enough for her to know. She does not need anything more right now. You will have plenty of time not to talk later too.” He smiles. “Show her. She will not need all the words, but she will need you to show her how you feel every day.”
I nod. She isn't a talker so that sounds right. “I can do that.”
“You can. Follow the list and it will be easy for you.”
I nod and he looks at the door then does his war cry. I smile as everyone looks around. Prez laughs. “All right Dakota. Let me get a beer in my hand and I'll give you status.” A Prospect runs up to him with a beer.
I watch Sheila as he tells about the Op then goes into the people. She shot a pussy that was going to light the whole house up just so he wouldn't be taken in. Thank God she got him because we were all in the house busy with the other pussies. The cheer goes up and I realize I didn't hear a fuckin’ word after Sheila. I am so fucked. People talk to her slapping her back and touching her arm. She never lets my hand go and I'm happy to stand here watching her get hers. She's fuckin’ good and everyone knows it. Them putting hands on her again has her eyes shining and a smile on her face. She's happy.
Driscoll comes up to her. “One a day isn't enough for you anymore She Dog. I need a fuckin’ team just to keep up with you.” Everyone laughs. “You did a good fuckin’ job. Thanks for not shooting Margie. She has a choice to train or walk. I hope that training is with you and Eliza.”
My girl is beaming. “The therapist sent Prez the go. He's putting me back on next rotation.” I squeeze her hand fuckin’ glad to hear it.
“You getting that is more important than my wayward officers. Fuckin’ nice Sheila.” He hugs her then steps back.
“Where'd the boy go?” she asks after clearing her throat.
“Deirdre has him for right now. I'm waiting until Prez decides what to do with him. He doesn't want him in care, but my kids are grown. I don't mind a few days, but I don't want to be weighed down again. It's getting good for us now.”
She nods but doesn't say anything. I'll have to ask what this is about later. It's bothering her right now and I want her back to happy. Eliza taps my shoulder. I bend to her stretching my arm out so I can keep Sheila's hand. “Take the boy.” I look at her. “At least think about it.”
I move away from her before she throws anything else at me. Too many fuckin’ new things are going through my head and she's pushing another kid. I haven't even thought long term with the first.
I need to get out of here. I lean in while she's talking to Brantley and Driscoll about the cams. “I'll be right back.” I walk out the back door and put my hands up on the porch molding. I hear the door but don't turn. It's a full house so Brothers moving around would be normal. Arms go around me and I smile. Then move away fast. That ain't Sheila's rings. “What the fuck?”
“Aww come on Jax it's been too long and you're needing someone to drain your hose. I saw you hard inside.”
Her head snaps back. “You don't touch Officers unless you're invited.” She falls when Sheila lets her go. I'm smiling the whole time. Definitely love her.
I look down. “You're lucky she didn't shoot you. She's on a roll today.” I laugh when the blood drains from her face.
“Come on Chuckles. I want to go home and need a ride from Security.”
I step over the whore and laugh. “Chuckles?”
She pulls my hand. “All I could think of for that clown smile you were wearing. Just get me fuckin’ home already.”
I pull her back to me. “Yes ma'am.” I kiss her long enough to get her moaning. “Thanks for saving me from whores and drug addicts.” She looks dazed and I pull her through the common room and out the door throwing chin but not stopping. “Why are we going to Security?”
“My bike has a warning light on.”
I stop and call Vinny to come get her bike and drop it at the shop. “Done.”
She slides in behind me and lays her head on my back, her arms tighten around me. “Thanks.” I don't
move loving the feel of her right there. “We fuckin’ sightseeing now?”
I laugh and start my bike. “Was just taking it all in.” She squeezes me and I head for home. Even the fuckin’ word home has me smiling. I'm glad Tiny isn't around. This would make his fuckin’ year.
I pull into the Compound and laugh going down her road. She looks around me. “Fuckin’ Brothers.” She's off the bike before I shut it off. “They're on my fuckin’ grass!” She pulls her phone. “Get this fuckin’ trailer off my grass!” She listens then starts yelling. “I don't care where the fuck you put it as long as it's not on my grass! If it rains, it's going to sink and make a fuckin’ mess of my yard. Get it out or I'm coming up there!” She hangs up smiling. “I need to get Stella I'll be right back.”
All I can do is laugh. She walks across the street and through the yards happy to go get her girl. I call Deirdre and tell her what Eliza said. I ask her to bring the boy to the shop tomorrow, but not say anything to Sheila until I can think this through. She agrees.
I get a beer and set three in the table I made for her then sit on the lounge chair wondering what's taking her so long. After a half hour I pull my phone but hear her husky laugh and put it back. She's walking behind Stella making noise and laughing. Stella is clapping and doing a little dance every couple of feet. I pull my phone again and record it. They're fuckin’ cute. This kid has to be older than one, she's smart and walks better than a baby would.
Sheila looks up at me with that happy smile. “Jess made her ear pieces like Darren.”
Fuckin’ women, they're too much sometimes. “That's awesome.” Stella looks up and smiles, making a noise. She claps and dances making me laugh. She likes getting the noise. I put my phone down and walk to get her. “You like the noise Tiny Tot.” She touches my chest. “Yeah baby. That's me talking.”
“I have to tell Tiny and Nancy,” Sheila says from behind me.
“Use my phone. I just took a video of you two.” She runs up the stairs and watches it making happy noises. “Guess she likes it huh?” I kiss her little cheek. “I'm happy for you Stella. You're in the right place.” She kisses my cheek and claps. She's a cute kid.
