“A son, is it? You just might have a daughter.”

“And what a beautiful girl she will be.”

Her smile stayed with her long after he left the cabin. Still aching and sore, she did need to rest. The bed felt like a cloud, and Corin kept her thoughts on their child and Dèsirèe as she drifted into a light sleep.

  ~ * ~

“Yikes!” Corin reached out to stop from falling out of the bed. She grabbed the beam as the ship swung back the other way, leaving her dangling above the floor. She waited for another roll back before letting go and dropping to the floor.

The air stopped in her lungs over the excruciating boom that rocked the Tempest. All of a sudden, the ship came alive in one ka-boom after another and Corin realized it wasn’t thunder she heard. “The cannons—oh no!”

She grew furious over her failed efforts to rise and get to the door. Crawling became the only way she could navigate the room. The flaying of the ship came from the storm waves, but the cannons could only mean they met up with pirates.

As she reached the deck, she said a prayer it wouldn’t be the Orchid when she spotted the other set of sails. “Nooo…”

She swung back around and searched the deck for Rogan. Terry stood at the wheel. She heard Dan’s booming voice above the roar of cannons and storm. The hands closing about her arms sent her scream out over the deck.

  “Corin, it is me, love.”

  “Rogan?”

“Aye, I do wish you would stay below, my cat.”

His try for lightness failed under another round of cannon fire. “It’s Diamond!”

Rogan knew he couldn’t lie to her. “Yes, and he must be mad to start a battle in this hurricane.”

  “Where is the Raven?”

“There, she just tacked around us. Brian and the boys are still on her.”

  “Then he has seen her?”

“Yes, Corin.” He didn’t have the heart to tell her the schooner probably would sink under the storm waves. But then, Corin knew that.

His lips felt warm on her brow, his arms a haven, knowing she would moan over the loss.

“You need to go below, Corin… please love.”

She nodded, unable to find her voice. He only wanted her safe. Rogan helped her get back to the gangway where they struggled to part.

A cannonball blasted through the railing where only moments ago they had been standing. Corin couldn’t help but wonder if Diamond’s aim were deliberate. “He’s insane.”

She heard the Orchid’s cannons fire again, only this time none hit the Tempest. Corin stifled her scream as she caught sight of Raven’s sail. She saw a landing hook snap tight on the rail.

Corin spun about to try and warn Rogan, but she couldn’t see him or Dan. The rain started beating down… each drop felt like a pebble hitting her as she ran to try and dislodge the grappling hook. Her hands were bleeding from cuts the barbs made on her skin, but the hook refused to move. She realized the weight on the line prevented her from moving it. Corin took a chance and looked over the rail.

  “Jacob!”

The man looked up, calling out, “Aye, Caleb and Jess are behind me.”

She stepped back as the three men made it to the deck. Anger glared out of their tight gazes as they came aboard. Corin knew she wouldn’t see Brian; her heart stopped beating as she looked over the rail to see him steering the Raven toward the Orchid.

Rogan held her arms and pressed his body into her back. Her hand reached up to hold his. “I am sorry, Corin.”

“Is there any way to get him back?”

A sad smile eased some of his anger at his brother. That her concern was for Brian, and not the Raven that she loved shouldn’t have surprised him. “No, he has sealed his fate.”

It only took a few minutes to realize what Rogan meant. Brian steered the Raven right in beside the Orchid and dropped the anchor, cutting the main sail. She realized the schooner was dead in the water.

They couldn’t hear what Brian called out, but when Diamond came to the side, Corin sucked in her breath.

She could hear Jacob’s curse. Brian’s challenge to Diamond drew the man over the rail and onto the Raven. She tightened her grip on Rogan’s hold. “Can’t we stop him?”

“No, I did that once. I’ll not interfere again.”

Jacob came over to them, “I am sorry, Rogan. I was at the wheel when he found my sword and forced us off Raven.”

“You couldn’t have stopped him any more than I could, Jacob. Right now, we need to get ready to blow that ship of Diamond’s out of the water.”

He squeezed Corin’s arms before letting her go. “When the cannons start again, Corin, I want you to get below.”

  “I will, Rogan, promise.”

Rogan’s orders to reload all the cannons rang out on the deck. She saw Diamond’s head turn to the Tempest, knowing he must have heard Rogan’s order and realized what would come. That one second of turning away from Brian became a grave mistake for Diamond.

Brian’s sword came swift, driven under the angry force Brian carried. Rogan’s brother slashed at the man, driving him back across Raven’s deck. Even in the wind and rain, Corin could see the red bloodstain on Diamond’s shirt spreading. The man’s movements were failing, and Brian continued with his relentless attack. Again and again, he struck Diamond until the man fell face down on Raven.

The roar that came wasn’t from cannon fire. Corin felt the hair on her arm stand straight up as the blue fiery light swept over the Raven.

Silence captured everyone except Corin. She climbed up on the rail. “Brian! Jump! Jump now and swim to us!”

Rogan yelled the same thing. His brother seemed stunned by the eerie light but finally looked up. “Jump! Get off the Raven!”

Rogan’s large hands gripped Corin about the waist and pulled her down. They both watched as his brother ran for the rail and jumped over. At the same time, the Raven disappeared from view. Corin’s gasp joined the others… only Jacob moved as he threw out a rope to Brian and started pulling him through the huge waves.

A crack of lightning snapped them out of the trance they had fallen into. Rogan’s hand reached out to grab his brother and pull him on board. His order to fire on the Orchid set off a round of explosions that rocked Corin.

Her small scream at being lifted off her feet ended when she realized Rogan carried her. Before he went into the companionway to the cabin, his order to reload and finish the job echoed across the deck.

Corin’s arms held on about his neck as she buried her face in his shoulder. She didn’t let go until he set her feet on the floor.

The blanket he placed about her wasn’t as comforting as his arms. She didn’t need to tell him what just happened to the Raven.

He wondered if someday they should tell Brian. “Not unless he changes.”

  “Who, Rogan?”

“Nothing love, just stay here for me.”

“He wouldn’t have liked my world…”

“No, I think you are right.”

She wished she could keep him with her. “You’d best go back and finish it.”

His hands brushed back the wild waves from her beautiful face He squeezed her hand before backing slowly away and out of the room. He stood on the other side of the door and thanked God for leaving Corin with him.

  Chapter Twenty-eight

  Home

“Mmm, it feels so good, I am not sure I can get up.” Corin’s yawn ended the conversation with herself. She gathered her gown about her and forced herself to get out of bed. “I don’t even know how long I slept.”

  “This is the third day.”

She spun about to find Rogan in the chair. “Rogan! You didn’t sleep in the chair. Heavens!”

He stretched out his long legs… his black riding boots looked wonderful, for they meant they really were here on Dèsirèe.

  “You look happy, my wife.”

She moved slowly to him, unbuttoning her gown with each step. She slowly ran her finge
rs down the opening, spreading it wider so he could see her nakedness. Sultry and sexy is exactly how she felt. “Oh, but I am, my husband.”

Corin slowly maneuvered onto his lap. Her legs wrapped around him as she pressed her sex against his. She could feel the stiff rod beneath the surface of the material and couldn’t hide her satisfaction from him. Her fingers started unbuttoning his shirt. “We are home, Rogan, and I want to spend every precious minute with you, my loving husband.”

Her hands slipped into the opening she made and roamed over his chest and muscled abs. “Mmm, you turn me on, husband. I’m on fire wanting you. Do you know how sexy you are?” She leaned in and kissed his tanned chest.

“Do you, my cat?” The warm breath from the giggle he brought from her spread through him like a blaze. As she ravaged his flesh with nips and kisses, his fingers delved into her hair, loving the silky feel of the long tresses.

Rogan buried his lips in her hair when she started to move over his hardened rod. The roll of her small hips could do crazy things to his male ardor. His own lips traveled to her earlobe, sucking in the delicate flesh as his tongue played in endless caresses. He smiled over her moan, knowing well how to excite Corin.

“You spoil me, Rogan.” Corin’s hands cupped his large jaw. “I wouldn’t survive without you, my love.”

His arms wrapped around her, bringing her up against his body. Corin let her head fall back, allowing him free rein. His kisses grew bold and impatient. She moved her hands down to unbutton his pants.

Once she released his thick rod, she moved over him, letting her heat encase his sex. When his hands took hold of her hips, she smiled into his gaze. Gently rising, Corin worked his stiff rod until the pulsing head pushed at the entrance of her sex.

Her kiss felt like a flame he couldn’t extinguish. His hip rose, and he held himself just inside her, letting Corin move down over his sex. The slow way she took him into her velvet heat made him want to ram into her. Her tongue demanded entrance and dominance as she slid herself down the full length of his shaft. She drove her tongue deep inside his mouth, playing out with her kiss each devouring thrust of her sheath over him.

It wasn’t long before he could barely keep hold of her hips. She ground herself down to take him inside and hold him there.

Corin pulled her lips from his and looked deep into his eyes. “Can you feel our child?”

Rogan smiled, and his hand moved over the growing mound… it was then that he did feel a movement. He looked from her to the rounding of her belly that had just come to life. “Corin…”

“I think he hears us.” She started a slower dance up and down his rod. His arms wrapped around her to keep her against him as she drove harder, wanting him to feel every slight tremor of her love for him.

When she cried out, Rogan let his own release come. Buried deep inside her, he could feel her grip him; the tremors did more to excite him, and Rogan groaned out in ecstasy. He never realized how powerful their climax could be. “Corin, sweet woman, I love you.”

“Aye Rogan, my love for you is as strong as the sails in time—forever.”

  FALLING IN TIME

  Prologue

“Damn it all Cassie, you don’t have to do this!”

Unruffled by his outburst the exasperating woman stuffed another file into her already crammed briefcase. “You’ll have a coronary if you don’t calm down and Mable will blame me.”

“I don’t give a good Gawd d…!” John silently finished his heated thought. For all her I’m an equal attitude, Cassie Malone blushed like a trooper. God, she was a constant headache for him. With a rueful smile, he knew she was also the one thing in this dilapidated newsroom that kept him young and sane.

Watching her unorganized search for what must be another vital bit of data, hidden somewhere in the mess Cassie called a desk, his temper began to cool down. Cassie usually got her way. Grumbling to himself, somewhere young lady there’s a man that you won’t be able to wrap around that pretty pinky of yours. Though, as often as he wished it to happen, John Cummings didn’t think there was a man around that could accomplish the feat.

At twenty-five, Cassandra Malone was the epitome of the independent woman.

Ah, James, if only you’d not left her to her own devices. To this day, he wondered if his friend could have changed his daughter. Probably not, even if he’d lived after that plane crash five years ago, she’d still have gone her own way. As her Godfather, John gave up trying to control her and settled on lending advice and guidance.

Proud as he was over her abilities he couldn’t help but worry. Cassie possessed a powerful need to prove herself. Sadly, John knew it stemmed from her dad’s death. Always a driven man, James Malone liked to push too far in order to get an inside story. He feared his friend’s daughter was bent on doing the same thing. Once she flew out of Chicago he would lose all control to prevent any disastrous course she might decide upon. “Look, Cassie, Tim is already over there…”

“And he’s scared of his own shadow. Gees, he’s spent more time in the shelters than on the wire. We haven’t had a story in two days from Riyadh. You’ve heard the reports, nothing has really happened, so what’s holding him back?”

Arguing when she was so right wasn’t possible!

“Where is it?” Cassie tossed another file onto the desktop.

John watched as she impatiently pushed back the long spiraling hair. The girl only concentrated on what she perceived as important and her looks weren’t part of the goals. In fact, she’d probably say it was an annoying nuisance. A striking combination of dark and light, an artist couldn’t have captured a more perfect balance. Black as a moonless night, the long thick curls fell in a satin curtain about her slim shoulders, nearly reaching her waist. He’d seen her efforts in the past to capture the full-bodied waves into some kind of order, but as usual, they always broke free with a will of their own.

  “I found it!”

“I don’t know how…” Cassie’s desk became the office joke.

Tossing the hand-held tape recorder into her shoulder bag, along with a notebook and tickets, she snapped the purse and case shut. “There I’m ready.”

“Well, I’m not.” John stepped forward, “You think this is some snap assignment. It’s dangerous over there, may
be Tim has the right idea. Chemicals and bombs are nothing to laugh at, little lady.”

The darkening in her sharp gaze came from the hurt inflicted by his unfair words. She wasn’t a fool. “Who’s laughing John? Hey, I’ll be careful, I promise.”

The girl gave him a reassuring kiss on his reddened cheek. “I’ll be sure to stay low, no chances, alright?”

  “Make sure you remember that.”

  ~*~

…A deafening noise blocked out everything; all Cassie heard was the rapid fire of the terrorist’s gun and then a monstrous ripping sound like nothing she ever experienced. A sudden flash…burning…Oh God, it was so hot! A fire seemed to be racing through her body. Another roll of the plane sent her falling back into something hard that connected with her head…

…Dark dreams filled with strange, heart-stopping screams and explosions came, one after another, surrounding her, yet she felt above it all…so unreal. She could have been floating on a cloud, watching as everything in the jet started to pull away in a thousand different directions. Spinning out of control, she felt jettisoned away from the horrible scenes taking place…then it stopped.

The silence brought a soothing peacefulness over her, leaving her in a cool, weightless world. Nothing seemed to matter as she floated, adrift in a peaceful existence. Closing her eyes, it became too hard to keep them open as the dream took over, “I must be dead…heaven must be a pool.” The cool lapping took away the burning sensation until it stole the last of her touch with reality.

  CHAPTER 1

  The Gift

“Looks to be a beautiful morning, Mr. Brunson.”

  “Aye, that it does Captain.”

Grabbing the rail with both hands, Blaine leaned into the brisk wind. The sea was the only one of nature’s powers that a man could pit his strength against and still see the beauty in the beast. Crystal blue, the rolling expanse vibrated over the hidden life within its secret depths. The sea held his fascination as nothing else could; he’d not like leaving its majestic boundaries. Even now his nostrils flared over the scent of approaching land. Two, maybe three days were all that remained of his life at sea.
