Cam pulled her into his lap and pressed his mouth to hers. They were both breathless and half undressed when the sound of fireworks filled the room.

Veronica pulled away and brushed a hand along his jaw. “I think I could love you, Cameron Rhodes.”

Pressing into her palm, he replied, “I sure as hell hope so.”

  Epilogue

By the time Veronica and Cam returned to the party, hand in hand and looking slightly disheveled, the band was in full swing, and the dance floor was packed.

“I’d say this wedding is a success.” She pointed to the newlyweds, swaying slowly in the middle of the floor, surrounded by their friends and family. “This wouldn’t be happening if it weren’t for you.”

“This would be happening regardless. You just made sure it happened here.”

Heaven forbid the man take credit for his good deed. She had her work cut out for her, but Veronica looked forward to the challenge.

“About time you two showed back up,” Janie said from the same bar stool where Veronica had left her. “Are you good or what?”

Cam placed a kiss on his sister’s temple. “Thank you.”

Janie’s expression softened, making her look younger and less jaded, but she recovered quickly. “No need to get all sappy and shit. And you’re welcome.” Hopping off the stool, she held up a fist to Veronica, who bumped it with her own. “Keep him in line. I need to get back to the pretty drummer boy downstairs.”

As she sauntered toward the exit, Veronica realized that Cam hadn’t introduced them, nor had Janie been surprised to see them together.

  “She knew,” Veronica mumbled.

“Yes,” Cam replied, the smile appearing more easily now. “Shall we?” He gestured toward the dance floor. The man was full of surprises.

  “You dance?”

  “Not usually, no.”

Veronica’s heart melted. He didn’t usually dance, but he’d dance with her. Leading him to the floor, she turned into his arms, and they fell into the rhythm of the song. Laying her head on his shoulder, she caught sight of another couple not far away—Samantha Walters and Clay Benedict. Veronica didn’t know either of them well, but even a stranger would recognize the connection between them. Samantha caught Veronica’s eye, and an unspoken message was received.

  Make him happy.

Acknowledging the sentiment, Veronica lifted her brows and glanced at Clay. Samantha dropped her gaze, the song ended, and the two parted with a casual nod. A shame. The manager and the music mogul made a beautiful couple.

Cam stopped dancing, and in her distraction, Veronica failed to notice. The world tilted, and he caught her against him. The same way he had the night they met.

“Are you okay?” he asked with a concerned expression.

Veronica nodded, amazed that she could be this contented. “Thank you for saving me last week.”

“Thank you for stumbling into my bar.”

“Thank you for agreeing to be my fake boyfriend.”

His thumb slid over her lips. “I was never faking it.”

Cam lowered his mouth to hers, and Veronica put her heart into the kiss. There, in the room where they’d met just a week before, the rest of her life began.
