Falling for Centerfield Page 19

“Come on, for posterity’s sake.”

Skeeter’s smile stretched unnaturally across his face. “Let’s get this over with.”

  “Cheese!” Harlow loved these guys.

Cole clapped Skeeter on the back. “Meet us back at my house. We’re celebrating.”

“Can’t we just hitch a ride?” Ryker looked from Harlow to Cole, back to the guys, and then he said, “Oh, right. Okay, after you guys go make out somewhere, can we hitch a ride?”

“You just want to ride in the J50.” Harlow pointed at his chest.

Skeeter pointed his thumb at Harlow. “She knows what a J50 is?”

“Oh yeah, it’s her favorite car. In fact, guys, I thought I saw another one out in the parking lot.”

Axe Man shook his head. “No way, yours is always the only one.”

“No, I’m serious,” insisted Cole. “I saw one. Let’s go take a look.”

Thirty seconds later and Skeeter joined them, without the costume.

  “That was fast.”

He grunted. Then they laughed and walked down the hallways together and out to the secured player-only parking.

Harlow gasped. “It’s white with back trim!” She ran toward a J50 parked next to Cole’s. “Do you think it has an alarm?”

Cole shook his head. “Why don’t you try the door?”

“What? I couldn’t. What if they come back?”

  “Just take a look.”

Her eyes widened. She lifted the handle, looked inside and then slammed the door. She swallowed, hands shaking. “Cole, does that say, To Harlow?”

He stepped closer. “It does, Butterscotch. It also says, Congratulations and thanks for saying yes. If you’d look at it long enough, you’d see the other stuff.” His eyes sparkled at her, happier than she’d ever seen him. “It’s yours, Harlow. You deserve it.” He pulled her into his arms and turned around, his back to the guys. All she could see was him, and she felt almost like they were alone. He stared for many seconds, just smiling into her face. “Did you really say yes?”

“Yes, I’ll say it again. Ask me.”

“Okay. Harlow. I want you in my life every day, all day.”

“Night.” Someone coughed out the word behind them.

“And night.” He smirked. “I love you. You’re my everything, Bonfire. Will you marry me?”

  “Yes! Oh, Cole. Yes.”

He tipped his head and found her lips, to much catcalling behind them, but soon she was aware of nothing but Cole. He picked her up and held her close, her world spinning in a great swirl of happiness. He pulled at her lips, pressing and nibbling them until he deepened their kiss and she thought she’d die of joy before she ever stopped. In a pause, he mumbled over her mouth, “Really. Thank you, Sweetness. For saying yes.”

She smiled, then suddenly remembered the others. “Are they watching us?”

  “Nah, they’re on their phones.”

He was totally bold-faced lying, but she didn’t care. “Okay. Then kiss me again, I’m dying over here.”

He hadn’t let go, his lips rested on hers. “I could kiss you all night.”

A voice cleared. Axe Man’s, maybe. “We’ll just get in the car now, I guess.”

“So, if Harlow’s got the new wheels, maybe we can drive yours, Big Dawg?” Definitely Skeeter.

Cole whipped his head around mid-kiss. “Sorry, babe. Um, just a minute.” Then he walked over to the guys, and they started a big conversation about how no one borrows the car.

“Just trying to do you a favor. You seemed a bit pre-occupied.”

“Yeah, and probably want to head over in the same car with your woman . . .”

Harlow slipped quietly into the front seat. New car, leather, and a hint of Cole’s cologne all swirled around in a happy kaleidoscope of perfect smells. Of course she couldn’t keep the car, or maybe she could. What did she know about having this kind of money? But no matter what, she was going to enjoy the first drive. The key fob was in the console. She pushed the start button. And revved the engine. “Ready, boys?”

They dove out of the way as if she were going to run them over. Then she lowered the windows and shouted, “Away we heave, away we hoe.”

They joined in, “We see and saw and down they go, proud and mighty, strong and true, the Lumberjacks are coming through! TIMBERRRRRRRRR!”

Everyone shouted together as she drove up to their small group. “I don’t care how your car gets home, Cole, but you’re coming with me.”

“Ooh! She told you!” Ryker held his hands out for the keys, but Cole put them in Axel’s hands.

“This man appreciates a good vehicle.”

Sawyer coughed. “He drives a motorcycle.”

As soon as Cole got in the car, she called out to the rest of the guys, “See you at Cole’s . . . in about an hour!”
