When the door swung open the reaction was immediate.
“Daddy!” Kelly cried, jumping straight into her father’s arms. At two years old, Kelly was already a stunner, with Ellie’s piercing blue eyes and coffee-colored, creamy skin. Gordon looked much more like his father, with his emerald green eyes and sharp, high cheekbones. The only hint of his mother’s genetics in him was the creamy tan that colored his skin. Gordon was four and an absolute hell-raiser. Ellie and Archer had to replace all the glassware in the house as soon as he’d learned to crawl.
Ellie walked over to the main door of their house and pulled it open. She was greeted by a very loud cheer.
“Ellie! Archer!” Arjun and Connie stood closest to the door, their baby Harold cradled in Arjun’s arms. Behind them, Katharina had arrived with Niles by her side, nearly jumping with excitement to see her grandkids.
“Happy Thanksgiving, you guys,” Ellie said, unable to decide whom to hug first. Gordon solved that problem for her, racing around Ellie’s legs to beeline straight towards his grandma.
“Gammy!” Gordon shrieked as Katharina lifted him in the air as easily as though he weighed nothing.
“How is my baby?” Katharina cooed. “How’s my neffy poo?”
Connie moved forward to grab Ellie in a vice-like hug. “Oh, I missed you so damn much! Happy Thanksgiving, El.”
“I missed you too,” Ellie said into her thick red hair. “How was your vacation? Tell me everything, how the hell is Germany?”
Connie laughed, wiping a stray tear off her face. “I’ll tell you everything. Let’s go in first, it’s freezing outside.”
It took over an hour for them to get settled around the table. Archer first sat down with Gordon and Kelly to help resolve the helicopter-truck-noodle-booger fiasco. Niles ran back and forth between the house and the car, bringing back one amazing item of food after another. He’d insisted on making Thanksgiving dinner, even though Ellie was hosting at her place.
She and Archer agreed to it easily. Who wants to cook for fourteen hours straight?
By the time they got around to sitting down with dinner on the table, Kelly had already passed out in her grandmother’s arms from sheer exhaustion. Gordon was slowly following in her steps—he’d already crawled into his father’s embrace and his head kept falling down onto Archer’s shoulders, his vividly green eyes drooping shut. The sight of them together made Ellie’s heart melt. Arjun and Connie put little Harold to sleep in the nursery room. Katharina sat at the head of the table, with Niles on one side, Archer on the other, and her granddaughter held tightly in her arms.
Katharina clinked a fork against a wine glass, drawing their attention. She raised her glass high in the air, joy and peace evident in her aging, kind eyes. “To the first of many Thanksgivings in this house,” she began, “and to all of us growing older and happier, together.”
“Cheers,” everyone chimed in around the table, raising their glasses in appreciation of her words. Ellie took a deep breath and took another look at Archer before clearing her throat. Everyone turned to glance at her.
“I think now’s as good a time as any to make an announcement,” Ellie said. “I’m pregnant.”
Her eyes flew to Archer. His face was blank with shock. The others around the table gasped, standing up in sudden excitement. Arjun let out a loud whoop that woke up both the children sitting at the table. Gordon looked up groggily before opening his eyes, while Kelly woke up and promptly burst into tears.
“Congratulations, my baby!” Katharina cried, pulling Ellie into a one-armed hug. “Oh, you’ve made me the happiest woman alive, you really have.”
Ellie gave her a smile and opened her mouth to respond but Kelly cried louder, drawing her grandmother's attention. The sound of her crying had woken up Harold and he too had begun to bawl in the other room, causing Arjun and Connie to hurry out of their chairs.
“Congratulations, honey!” Connie exclaimed as she hugged Ellie. Behind her, Arjun had already raced off to check on Harold. Connie gave her an apologetic grin. “I totally want to freak out with you about this, but I just gotta go check if Harold is fed.”
“It’s okay, hon, go ahead,” Ellie said with a wave of her hand. “I’ll be right here.”
Connie gave her a kiss on the cheek before hurrying into Harold’s room. Ellie turned around to see Katharina swinging Kelly around on her feet—the only thing that made that child laugh once she really got going. Gordon had left Archer’s arms and was chasing Niles around with a butter knife. Niles was greatly enjoying pretending to be afraid of the little boy, letting him chase him through the house’s furniture.
“Be careful,” Ellie yelled at them before turning back towards Archer. He looked stunned.
“Well?” Ellie asked him softly. “One more of those,” she said, jerking her chin at Gordon pretending to stab Niles in the knee. “What do you think?”
Archer gave her the softest of smiles, his heartbreakingly green eyes crinkling at the corner. “I think it’s fucking amazing.”
Ellie gave him a tight hug and glanced over at the beautiful, chaotic and love-filled life that she’d managed to create for herself. She looked down at the man that made it possible and held him tighter.
All was well.
