Languish for you (My soulmate) Page 7

by Daniel, Serafina

“Do you have a boyfriend?” I asked, taking a cookie in my hand, too.

  She shook her head.

“No, but I am trying to. There is one guy which is from family with whom my family is friends. We know each other since the birth, but I my family had to move when I was twelve. But lucky for me, he came here to study... strange, but he will study the same thing you ...”

“I will start studying it this year,” I narrowed my eyes a bit.

“Yea, he too. Strange, right. I have two friends now who will study the same thing. Maybe you will meet him. After all, there isn't many universities which offer the same studies.”

  I shrugged.

“Maybe. What's his name?” I asked only to be polite and show that I really listening to her.

“Tobias,” only one word but it was told with so much love. But not the way how it was told forced my eyes to double, but the name itself. Tobias? For some reason this name liked to echo around me.

I didn't know what to say. No, it couldn't be that Tobias, who had stalked me. Maybe it was another guy with the same name. After all, Tobias was a quite nice name for a boy.

“Actually, he is planning to come tonight for dinner. My mother is coming back from France. So, he will come to greet her. Maybe you would like to come with your friends and meet my parents,” she offered.

  “I don't know.”

“Please. Come. My parents would be trilled to meet the new neighbors,” puppy's eyes appeared on her face.

“I need to..” and the front door opened. Christopher and Avery came inside. I stood up and took some steps forward. Agnes did the same thing. I noticed that her mouth opened a bit when her eyes looked at Christopher.

“Vanessa,” he said, noticing our guest.

“Hi. This is Agnes. Our neighbor. She came to introduce herself,” I explained and move one step closet to him. “Agnes, this is Christopher and Avery. Avery and Christopher, this is Agnes.”

“Nice to meet you,” Christopher said quickly and looked at me. “You are in your pyjamas,” he declared, like I didn't know what I was wearing.

“Thank you, detective. I didn't know that,” I said in a mocking tone.

“Vanessa,” Avery said not my real name in cold tone. “Your manners.”

I stole a glance at Agnes. She seemed confused.

“Avery is not only my friend. She is my governess.”

Avery frowned, hearing my declaration. But really, she was it.

“It was nice to meet and talk with you, Agnes,” I said and moved to my room, leaving them alone. I heard when the front door was closed. Also, I heard steps to my room. Then I saw Christopher and Avery. From their faces I could only guess that I did something bad and this time.

“What?” I asked. I had already changed my clothes. So, they couldn't tell me that I was wearing not the right clothes right now.

“You know, those eighteen years didn't change the courtesy. Why were you wearing your pajamas when the guest was in the flat?” Avery asked in steady voice. Her face was wearing a porker face.

Yea, a volcano which is waiting for that right moment when it could erupt, I said mentally.

“Sorry, but I didn't have time to change my clothes. I thought that someone was in the flat, so, I didn't hurry to change my clothes, because I like to be in my pyjamas in my bed when I write. Then I hear the door bell. I wanted to be rude, even then when I remembered you warning me about mysterious bad guys...well, I decided to risk,” I said casually.

“She said she is a neighbor,” Christopher said, crossing his arms against his chest. His intensive stare was burning holes in my body.

  “And?” I didn't understand.

“She seems to be your age,” he continued.

“And?” I repeated my question. What did he want to tell me by mentioning all those things?

“You need friends,” Avery said. She also didn't seem eager to play games. “She said she had asked us to the dinner tonight.”

I looked at Avery, then at Christopher. I tried to read their faces and stance. But nothing. They were professionals at hiding their emotions and thoughts. I didn't like that. I wanted to know what was going on in other person's head.

“And you would like to go?” I asked uncertainly.

“You need friends, Vanessa,” Christopher said frostily.

“Trinity to you,” I corrected him, scowling. I didn't like that name and his tone.

“You are Vanessa. Trinity is dead,” and that was Avery's turn to disgorge into this battle. “Get use to that. Agnes seems to be a sweet girl. So, I think her parents will be the same. It would be only for the best for you to have friends. We are invited at six o'clock. You have four hours to learn some manners.”

They are strange, a thought crossed my mind. All my new life seemed to be like a forest. The deeper you went, the more trees you saw. Right now, the more days passed, the more questions I had in my head. Why were they acting like this? What did they want from me? What should I do?

“Make up your minds. One minute you want me to sit at home and write, another you want me to make a bunch of friends?” I sat on my bed. My arms were crossed against my chest. I didn't hide my irritation on my face.

“Christopher, please, leave us alone. I need to teach my student some things,” Avery asked politely. Christopher stole a glance at me and reluctantly nodded. After a minute he was out from the room.

I shot an intent look at her. She smirked, seeing my face. She took a seat on the chair.

“Please, don't start this conversation like this; I know it is difficult for you. You were dead and now you are alive. But you need to understand that not everyone gets a change to live again and so on,” I said, striking an attitude.

“Okay, I won't say those words. Instead of telling them to you, I order you to forget them. We don't have time or mood to play games with you. You will go to that dinner, make some new friends and so on.”

She stood up and walked to the door, but here she stopped and looked at me.

“Please, put that green dress which is in your wardrobe. You will look adorable in that thing,” and she walked out. I was confused. Really, who could act like this?

Their behavior was confusing me. I was so lost and wishing only for answers, which no one was intending to give me.

I put my head on the pillow and stared through the window to the cloudy sky. A few birds flew by the window and I suddenly found myself wanting to go with them. The birds didn't have to think what to do, how to act...they just lived.

I glanced at the wardrobe. I didn't remember having a green dress or even seeing it. So, I decided to lay my eyes on it. I stood up and approached the wardrobe. I opened the door and the green dress met me immediately. It was a really gorgeous thing. I wanted to put it on my body right now.

“Nice,” I said, touching the fabric.

And then the thought about Tobias sprang in my mind. How many chances were there to meet that Tobias? I hoped that there was none.

  Chapter nine

Avery came into my room. She was wearing a simple black dress, creating a illusion that her hair was on fire. I had to say, I liked that view.

“Are you ready?” she asked me, smiling.

I nodded and look to the mirror again. That green dress really fit me. My long, dark brown hair lazily fall on my shoulders.

“You look nice,” Avery said, putting her hands on my shoulders like my mother used to do. With this gesture she liked to encourage me. My tutor was doing the same thing; giving me a sign that I won't be alone, that there will be people, who would be with me.

  I sighed.

  “You too.”

“Come. Christopher is waiting. And believe me, he doesn't like to wait.”

We found Christopher standing next to the door. He was wearing a white shirt and a pair of black pants. He seemed bored.

“Here we are,” Avery said, stepping closer to him.

Christopher turned his eyes to look at his friend and
then to me. Something in his face change when he saw me. I tried to find out what had changed and what that could mean, but he soon gripped himself and that bored man's face was back again on the display.

“It's high time,” he opened the door and let me and Avery get out from the flat. He followed us. I stole a glanced at him. I noticed that he was observing me. I felt how my cheeks started burning and I didn't know why.

Avery suddenly stopped and pressed the door bell. I hugged myself and lowered my face to see the ground and my black shoes.

The door was soon opened by Agnes. I lifted my eyes reluctantly up. She was wearing a simple pair of jeans and a sweater.

“Hi,” she said in plateful tone. “I am glad you came.”

“It is really nice for you to invite us,” Avery said and lifted up a bit a box of a cake. I didn't even register her taking it from our home.

Agnes took the box and made some way for us to get in. Without any hesitation, we stepped inside. Soon two adults appeared in front of us. They were Agnes's parents. The woman was quite short, with short yellow hair, a bit big nose. Her eyes were warm and grey. Her husband was tall and with extra weight. His hair was grey and he seemed proud of that.

“Nice to finally meet our new neighbors,” the man said, extending his hand to Christopher. “I am Niklas Stern and this is my wife Eleine. Our daughter you already know.”

“It's nice to meet you,” Christopher said politely, shaking the man's hand. “I am Christopher Gray. This is,” he pointed to me,” Vanessa Stanton and that is Avery Siebenkind.”

“It's really nice to meet you all,” the woman said. “Please, come inside. Our last guest said he will be late.”

We entered into a huge living room. But it wasn't as big as at our home, but still, it was huge. I took a seat next to Christopher, who pretended not to see me or feel me next to him. On my other side was sitting Avery, who wore a sincere smile.

“So, how did you end here, Christopher? I can bet, that your accent is British,” Niklas said.

I started to wonder, how many times Christopher had heard that statement. Yea, he really had that accent.

“I was born and raised in England. Only a few years ago I moved here,” he explained. “Avery is my aunt and accepted to help me to settle here, in Germany. So, I am living with her and Miss Vanessa.”

“Yes,” Avery said. “I am Vanessa's legal guardian. Her parents died two years ago.”

“Oh, poor little thing,” the woman said.

I smiled sadly. I really will hear a lot of that in the future.

“But everything is fine now. We moved to live here, where she will soon start her studies at university,” she continued.

“ Could I tell me where the toilet is?” I suddenly asked. I wanted to escape this pointless talk and the toilet seemed the best excuse for me to escape.

“Of course. You will find the toilet in the corridor on your left,” Niklas explained. I thanked for directions and moved to find that toilet. It wasn't difficult. On the door I noticed CW sign.

I got into the small room and sat on the toilet bowl and took some time before I will leave this room. During my stay in this room, I heard how the door bell rang and a new voice joined to the others.

Tobias. That should be Tobias, I said in my mind.

I stood up and walked from the room, back to the living room, where the answer was waiting for me: was it the same Tobias which had stalked me.

I took a deep breath and walked into the room. My eyes instantly found him, sitting in front of Christopher and shooting dirty looks at his direction. Surprisingly, he stop doing that and looked at me astonished.

Dammit, I said in my mind. Yea, how many chances were to meet him again? I could tell you, one of million. No, make it one of milliard.

“And this is Vanessa, Tobias,” I heard Agnes saying.

“Yea...I know,” he said shocked. “I have met you before.”

“You know each other?” that was Avery's surprised voice echoing in the room.

“Yea,” he nodded. His eyes were glued to me, giving me chills. “Yesterday. It's strange that we meet again...like this.”

Yea, really strange, I said in my mind bitterly.

“Vanessa,” Christopher sweet voice woken me up from my trance. “Are you feeling fine? You seem paler than usually.”

I forced myself to look away from Tobias. I met Christopher's eyes and nod. There wasn't any point to say that I was feeling good when I was not. Plus, this could let me leave this flat and that Tobias which, for some reason, scared me.

  “Headache,” I whispered.

I noticed Avery. She scowled. She wasn't pleased by my behavior. But what could I do? I really wasn't feeling good seeing that stalker.

“Can we help you?” Agnes's mother asked.

“Chocolate if you have. It helps her,” Avery said as she took my hand and lead me on the sofa. I sat down, forcing myself not to lift my head up.

  “Agnes?”

“Wait minute,” she walked from the room and when she came back, in her hands everyone could see a bar of black chocolate. “Here you go,” she said. Avery thanked her and gave me some chocolate. I took it into my mouth reluctantly. Why couldn't she just let me go home? Why did we need to stay here?

“Will she be alright?” Tobias asked concerned.

“Don't worry. She will be fine,” Christopher stated and touched my back with his hand. For some reason his touch wasn't even close to that touch which should give you confidence and courage. It almost reminded me of...

No, it can't be, I said in my mind. Why should Christopher be alarmed? Maybe Tobias was dangerous person? If so, I should keep my distance from him. I really didn't need any kind of trouble.

“Does it happen a lot?” Niklas asked.

  “Not really,” I said.

“If it does, you should go to see a doctor. One of my friends could help you.”

“I forgot to mention that my husband is a doctor,” Eleine said casually. “He knows what he is talking.”

Christopher changed a glance with Avery. She frowned a bit, giving him a sign that she didn't want to agree with his plan. But what kind of choice did she have?

“Don't worry. Vanessa is supervised by many good doctors. We will ask for their help. But right now I think that the best thing would be for her to take a nap. So, if ...”

“Of course. Maybe other time we could talk longer,” Eleine said, but I didn't hear much enthusiasm in her voice.

Avery nodded as she stood up. I followed her example. Christopher didn't hurry to stand up. His eyes lingered on Tobias, who was eating me with his eyes.

“Christopher?” Avery said. He turned his eyes slowly at her, rewarding her with a frowned face. He didn't say anything.. He just took my hands and helped me to go to the door. He was afraid that I could just drop on the ground. Maybe I could. Seeing the same Tobias in front of me, wasn't really pleasing experience.

I hoped that Tobias won't decide to open his mouth and say something. For my luck, he didn't He was standing, staring at me like he was seeing a really interesting movie in front of him, or maybe really beautiful painting.

And why does he make me feel so unpleasantly? I asked myself in my mind, gripping Christopher's hands tighter for some reason. Deep inside me I had a clue that Tobias wouldn't ever hurt me or do something, what could provoke my tears on my cheeks, but for some reason I still feared him and wanted to be closer to Christopher, who would protect me.

“Everything is fine,” I heard Christopher whispering. He definitely had noticed my actions around his hands.

  I nodded.

Soon we were out from Agnes' home and leading to our one. Avery and Christopher remained in silence. I decided to keep my mouth closed, too. I didn't know what I could say and suddenly I felt so tired, like I had worked all day some kind of hard work. I almost let Christopher carry me to my room, to my bed.

“Sleep,” he said as he kissed my forehead, giving me pleasant v
ibes.

I nodded and soon I found myself taking a seat in the train, which was leading to the dreamland.

“She had already met him and you didn't tell me?” Avery was walking from one side to the other, controlling her emotions, which were ticking like a bomb, just ready to blow everything around her.

Christopher was sitting on the sofa, trying to avoid his partner's scowled face. Yea, he didn't tell her about Tobias meeting her. Also, he wasn't planning to tell her how he acted; took the note from her hands and dropped it on the table. Why? Because he didn't want to let her go so quickly. Why? Because she really reminded him of his Vanessa, who will never come back to this world. Because of that he was damned to live alone, knowing his destiny.

  “I forgot,” he said simply.

“Forgot?” she didn't believe him and did the right thing, because he was lying to her.

He didn't say anything more. Christopher just sat on the soda, his eyes glassy, seeing nothing around him. He knew that Avery wasn't stupid. She will soon understand what was happening with him and she won't be very happy about that.

“ Christopher, you know better than anyone else that we are here not to play games. If she meets met him, we need to hitch her forward to kiss him, to flirt with him and then say 'I do' in the church,” she was telling what he needed to remember. Christopher knew his duty and he had heard it not for the first time. But this time these words were like daggers to his body.

Don't get too attached, he was telling himself over and over in his mind, but with every time these word, instead of giving him more effect to be serious and aloof, he wanted to spend more time with her, find out, how much she was similar to his wife.

“I know,” he said only because he knew that Avery waited some kind of words from his mouth.

“So, tell, what happened yesterday? Why did she suddenly become like a ghost seeing him?” she sad down, studying him.

“He stalked her and she got scared,” he said casually. Christopher decided not to mention that part about the note.

“Scared? She got scared?” that didn't make any sense to her. After all, they were soulmates and they could never be afraid of each other even if one of them was stalking another.
