I was about to open my mouth and ask her to explain me that killing part, but Christopher knocked on the door and entered inside. He looked dashing; he was wearing a costume, giving him a businessman appearance.
“We can go,” he said, avoiding settling his eyes on me. He acted coldly with me these days. He was extremely arctic when Avery was around. But still, he wasn't friendly with me and that only made me feel lonely and sad. I tried to fight with that sadness, but I didn't find enough strength in me.
“Are you ready, Vanessa?” Avery asked. I glanced for the last time at the mirror, seeing a girl, who should be in grave, and then nodded, knowing that I was lying to her, to him and to myself. I wasn't ready and I didn't know if I could ever be.

The car stopped and I lifted my eyes from my arms, which were peacefully resting in my lap. Christopher stopped the vehicle not far from the huge building, where not far away from it, many young people were moving from one side to other. They all seemed excited and ready to open a new chapter in their lives.
“Tobias will be there,” Avery said. That fact had to give me more courageous to open the car door and get myself into that sea of young people, but it only killed my determination. I didn't know why, but the fact that I will meet my soulmate, didn't influence me to leave the car, either.
I stole a glance at Avery and then at Christopher. My tutor seemed calm, while Christopher was visibly fighting with some kind emotion of his in his mind. Was he jealous of me going into that building? If so, I could easily switch places with him. I didn't want to go there.
“Go,” Christopher said, gripping the wheel tighter. That one word from his mouth made a bigger effect on me that Avery's all sentence.
I nodded and left the car, which soon shot into the labyrinth of street, leaving me alone to face new demons of my new life.
I took some hesitating steps forward, letting my eyes scan the area and detect Tobias. When I was finally alone, the idea of meeting him didn't seem so bad. And when I noticed him standing, making some friends, a bolt of betrayal hit me.
I took one step back and looked around alarmed. Betrayal? Why was this emotion in my mind, in my heart? I wasn't betraying anyone by meeting a person, who should be my soulmate, a person, who would love and respect me.
This strange emotion was short lived in my mind, because Tobias noticed me standing alone and totally lost in this fuss. He smiled widely and said something to the people he was talking with, before his feet found their way to me.
“Hi,” he said unsure a little if he had the right to speak with me.
I nodded and put a tiny smile on my face. I wasn't sure if I should speak. Suddenly I felt so many emotions in me; I was happy, nervous, scared, curious, sad... From where were all those emotions coming from?
“So, Agnes didn't lie. You will be studying the same thing,” his smile grew quickly on his face. His eyes became like two stars which seemed to be taken from the sky and put into his face. Also, I noticed that he seemed nervous around me.
“Yea,” I managed to say. ”I will.”
It was so awkward, that I didn't know how even to act in front of him. Everything what came into my mind seemed so pointless.
“Why didn't you call me?” he asked, shifting uncomfortably from one foot to another.
I licked my lips, trying to win some time to create a proper answer, which wouldn't hurt his feelings. But while I was trying to find the right words, a thought crossed my mind; why Christopher dropped his note on the table if he had knew, who Tobias was to me? Or maybe he didn't know?
“Sorry. I just lost that paper,” I said, avoiding to meet his eyes, although my mind really wanted to see his face right now.
“Lucky for me that we met again,” he said, throwing out his mobile phone. After a few seconds, he showed the screen for me, where many numbers were waiting to be memorized by me.
I nodded and quickly took my phone. Soon he had mine and I his phone number. He even called me to make sure that I didn't give him a wrong number.
“Here, now you couldn't avoid me,” he said, smiling from ear to ear. For some reason I smiled too. His presence to me let my soul sing, and I liked that strange feeling. I didn't want it could ever end.
“Tobias!” someone yelled his name and we both turned our attention to a girl, who was beckoning him to come.
His smile started shattering on his face, giving me a sign that soon he will leave me alone, here, where I didn't know anyone.
“I think we should go,” he said and without telling me a word, he took my hand, squeezing it a bit. I bit my bottom lip in order not to let my smile grew bigger on my face. Feeling his warm skin against mine, I thrilled with joy. Yea, now that all soul-mate was working on me. I forgot everything, the only thing, which was important to me right now, was him.
I walked after him. I didn't care where while I could be near him. Yea, that soulmates' thing was real.
“How are you feeling now?” his question brought me back from my thoughts. I looked at him and let his warm and inviting eyes meet mine.
I nodded.
“A little nervous.”
He nodded. He was nervous, too. But I doubted that he knew why I was tensed, jumpy and feeling like my body was made from an ice-cream.
“Vanessa, this is Julia. Julia, this is Vanessa,” the girl had long strawberry blond hair which was hiding her delicate shoulders. The girl herself was slim and without huge protuberance. In my time boys called girls like her a plank. “Julia lives not far away from me. She will study law,” he gave me a hint, how he knew her.
Jealousy struck me. That girl was living not far away from him. I didn't like that favt. Also, I was not delight seeing her hungry eyes when she looked at him.
“Nice to meet you,” I said, but I didn't intend to give her my hand to shake it. I just put my free hand on Tobias' hand, which still was gripping mine. He wasn't hurrying to let me go, and that spread vibes in my body.
Julia noticed his hand on me, and her face expression instantly changed; she seemed irritated. But I pretended that I didn't notice anything in her face. The same thing Tobias did too. At least I thought he had noticed that.
“Me too,” she said and took a deep breath before she quickly glanced around. She tried to create a reason for her to leave us or at least that I could leave him.
“So, what are you studying?” she asked, looking straight at my face. She was studying me, reminding me my characters which also tried to understand with what kind of person they will have to deal, what kind of person they will have to defeat, beat and steal a hope.
I didn't turn away, although all my cells in my body wanted to do that, to run away somewhere from those two eyes, which could bring me back to the coffin.
I shivered. Tobias noticed that, but he didn't understand what kind of thoughts were in my little head, and I doubted that even a soulmate could know that.
“The English language and literature,” I answered, stepping one little step closer to Tobias.
“Really?” she seemed genuine astonished. She really didn't expect me to say that I will be studying the same thing as him. “So you will be studying together,” that fact really didn't please her. I could see how her eyes darkened one tone.
“Yes,” Tobias said with a smile in his voice. He was happy that I will be not far away from his eyes. Yea, he definitely felt something toward me.
“How did you meet?” she asked.
I frowned a bit. She was snooping, and that only meant that she had some kind of intentions. Yea, I was cautious person. Because I liked writing, I analyzed peoples' behavior, dressing habits and other things which could let me peek at their mind. Right now she was giving me a right hint about her motives; she was a hunter and Tobias was her prey. And what was I? A problem, with which she will have to deal.
“ Accidentally,” he started when I kept my mouth shut. Julia's attention turned to him. I felt safer when her eyes finally left my body. “I thought she
was one of my friends, but I was wrong. And later I found out that she lives in the house where my friend's family lives. Then we met again.”
She listened to him without undisguised admiration, letting me feel waves of jealousy. I wanted to take him away from her eyes, her voice...
I opened my eyes widely and glanced at our hands. Now he wasn't gripping me. No. Our fingers were tangled with each others.
No, I shook my head a little. I didn't know Tobias and I had felt like I owned him, like he was mine to want, to touch, to listen. Even if he was my soulmate, I shouldn't feel like this now, when I had seen him only three times. No, it wasn't right.
I let go his hand and took two, small away from him. He noticed that and his smiled started to die and his eyes, which were like stars some minutes ago, started fading, like someone turned the switch off.
I felt sadness, because I was a causer of that heart breaking face. But what could I do? It wasn't right. Avery did one huge mistake by telling me, who Tobias supposed to be to me; she stole my decision.
“Sorry, but I have just remembered that I have to make a call. Could you excuse me?” I said as I took out my phone. I was lying in order to get away from them. I didn't like to lie, but at that moment it seemed the best thing for me to do. I wanted to be away from Tobias right now.
Julia nodded without hesitation, while Tobias delayed to give me a sign that he let me leave them that they could be alone for some time. But I didn't need his approval in order to walk away. So, I just turned around on my heels and walked from them away, coming back into the sea of people which soon hid me from Tobias eyes.
I didn't want to call or to talk with anyone. I just needed to get away from this fuss and be alone where I could collect my thoughts and create some kind of plan what I should do next. Although I liked that soulmates' thing, I wasn't sure if it was what I needed right now. I always fought that no one could ever control my life. The knowledge that I didn't have any kind of decision, that everything was done by someone's else mind... that made me furious.
I glanced over my shoulder, only to check if Tobias was still following me with his eyes. But there were so many people walking around, creating a live wall that for him was impossible to see me.
I grinned and strode to the street where I saw some buses. Without any hesitation I got in one of them. One part of me was screaming in my head that I was doing a bad thing, that I was running from my happiness, which was brought to me on a golden plate, but the other one was tapping on my shoulder, encouraging me not to stop, but fight. I should be my own life's owner.
The bus moved forward and I closed me eyes, greeting darkness which surrounded me all those eighteen years. It was strange how darkness scared me when I woke up in the coffin. Right now it seemed so friendly, so calm that I found myself wanting to become it. Death was heaven, while the life was hell.
The bus stopped and the doors opened. I came back from the darkness to the colorful world. Many various age people took their seats, ignoring me, the person, who knew more about this world.
I looked through the window. The buildings started vanishing from the view, giving some place for the trees. And soon I noticed a river, which the buss will cross soon. I decided to get out in the next stop and walk along the river.
The bus stopped and I did what I had planned. Soon I took a seat on one of many benched, which were placed for people to admire the nature, to hear water's created sounds. I hugged myself and watched some ducks in the river. I knew that their lives were easier than mine. Why? Because maybe they could just spread their wings and fly away, while I was stuck here, where I was tied to banks, humans' society and their expectations, to rules and so many things, which had to give me independence, but it only made me a bigger prisoner of this world.
“Good day, Trinity,” someone said behind me. I jumped on my feet and found with my eyes who had said those words. I saw a young man standing behind the bench. He was wearing simple clothes, but from according to how stood, I could say that he wasn't a simple worker, who had bent his back every single day in order to have nothing in the end. He was confident and good looking. His hair was dark brown and short, his face angled. His body... yea, he could really advertise something and people would by it, or he could walk down the podium.
“Who are you?” I asked, narrowing my eyes into two small splits, while my arms crossed against my chest, ready for a fight, but I hoped that I won't need to use my strength against him. I doubted that I would be strong enough to do a really huge damage to him.. He seemed strong..
“Let me introduce myself, Trinity,” he put his hand on his chest and lowered his head a bit, proving me that he really was highly descended,” I am Eduard Fuchs. I am really pleased to finally meet you.”
I took one step back, not letting my eyes to leave his face.
“You know my name,” that wasn't a question, but he still decided to answer to it.
He nodded and smirked.
“Yes, I know your name, Trinity. It's a honor to be in front of you,” he stepped one small step to me, his stare changed, reminding me of people, who saw something, what they wanted really badly and finally they could take it. I didn't like his eyes, or those slow movements. He was like a cat, calculating his movements carefully before he could jump and grab his prey.
“How do you know my name?” I asked in low tone, giving him a clear sign that I had some powder in me which could burst at every second.
“That's one really important question. How do I know your name?” he said slowly, like enjoying every single letter in the word. It gave me the shudders. In my head I could hear alarm bell ringing, telling me to scurry away from that guy, who definitely knew something about me.
For my own surprise, I shook my head, silencing that alarm in my head. I shouldn't be afraid of him, while I knew who I was and what I wanted.
“I am waiting, you know,” I snapped.
He rolled his eyes playfully.
“I am one of the bodiless, Trinity. Do you know what the bodiless are?” he asked, taking some steps to circle around me.
I nodded. Christopher and Avery had mentioned them.
“No, you don't,” he shook his head. “No one truly knows what the bodiless are, but I will tell you, Trinity, because...” he stopped, trying to find the right word in his mind to describe me them. I waited patiently for him to start talking, but he really didn't hurry to do that. He wanted to test my patience, which I had never really had. Patience required time, and that was the only thing which no one of us really had. We could make money, food, produce many children and so on, but we couldn't give us some extra time to live.
“You are wasting my time,” I informed him annoyed by this entire situation.
“Yes, you are,” he nodded. “I could see that you want to take the bull by the horns. That's quite understandable. But I doubt that we will have enough time to start this conversation,” he said as he pulled a white card from his trousers' pocket. “Meet me when you will be able. And make sure, that you don't have anything what could track you. After all, Christopher doesn't like for his lambs to wander away without his knowledge,” he gave me a wink.
I took that note from his hand without any hesitation. After all, that white paper couldn't do me any kind of damage. I hoped.
“See you later, Trinity,” he lowered his head and quickly walked away from me.
I looked at the card. There wasn't any name written on it, only an address which I was intending to visit, but before that, I needed to give some questions to my tutor and protector. Something in all this situation finally decided to wake me up from that deep sleep, which I was having. Now it was time to find out, what really was happening.
Chapter twelve
I hadn't even stepped five steps to the bus stop when I heard my fake name echoing behind me. I stopped and turned around only to see Christopher running toward me without even slowing his step. Soon his hands locked around my wrists and shook me a little.
“Wh
at are you doing here? Alone?” he asked, panic in his voice. “Didn't you learn from your previous time? It's dangerous for you to wander in these streets alone.”
I took a careful look at him. Not only his voice was out of unusual, but also and his face; worried and relief seeing me in front of him. Really, I didn't understand, why he thought that it was so dangerous for me to walk in the city alone?
“Nothing bad had happened the last time. Oh, stop exaggerating things. How the last time I checked, not much had changed from the last time I was a life; there aren't any dragons, mutants and so on.”
“But there are still some living beings, which would like to have you,” he said as he pulled me to walk with him away from the river, from the trees. Soon I could see the street. But even seeing it, Christopher's grip didn't loose even a bit. Plus, all the way he was glancing around, searching for enemies.
“What could happen to me if I wonder alone?” I asked him as five huge steps separated us from the street.
He didn't answer, and that only made me feel anger. They both kept me in the darkness, letting me feel small and vulnerable. I didn't like to feel like that.
Soon the black car stopped next to us. I noticed Avery in front of the wheel, looking only forward.
“Get in,” Christopher said in sternly voice.
I met his eyes with a frown and did what he had said, but really not because I wanted to get inside that car, but because I didn't want to start a quarrel. It wasn't time and place for it.
“Drive,” Christopher said to Avery as he sat next to me, like making sure that during the travel I won't jump from the car. Idiot, I said in my mind. I crossed my arms next to my chest and looked through the window.
The awkward silence spread around us in the car, creating some tension. I started wondering, who will be the one, who will decided to open his mouth first. Surprisingly, no one dare to say a word until we were in the flat. Only then the heavens opened.
“Now, please tell us, why did you do like this?” Avery said, shooting angry stares at me.
