Dead Days (Book 3): Cassie Page 4

by Hartill, Tom

  “Get in! C’mon!”

Dr. Singh runs to the rear doors and throws them open, and we jump inside. Larry drops me hard and I cry out in pain. I pull myself further in, scooching on my backside.

I realise my legs have gone dead.

  What’s happening to me?

Mike shuts the doors from inside just as the first infected slams into them. The van shudders, but then Damien is driving.

There are several muffled thuds as we hit some of them, but Damien never slows. I can’t see him yet from inside the back of the van, but the first thing I’m going to do is kiss him.

  If I can.

I look down at my legs.

  “Dr Singh?”

“I think you can call me Kunal now Cassie, don’t you?” He smiles shakily.

I force myself to return his smile. “Kunal then, I think something’s wrong with me. Can you check my legs please?”

He gives me an assessing look. Mike is still looking out the rear windows and Larry is sat upright with his eyes closed. Neither are paying attention to me and that’s good.

“Of course I can.” He leans in close. “What am I looking for Cassie?”

I feel a tear trickle down my cheek. “I- I’m not sure.”

He puts a hand on my shoulder. “Alright. Well let’s just see shall we?”

  I nod gratefully.

He moves carefully, moving his hands up and down my legs. When he reaches my left ankle, I feel a sharp pulse of pain. He hears me gasp. He gently pushes up the bottom of my leggings and tugs down my sock.

  Oh no.

  Oh please God no.

  The Nurse….

Just above my ankle is an angry red wound.

  Oh fuck.
