Tim was playing with the two little puppies they had brought home to train. “Boomer and Chopsticks should be in that book,” Tim added. “Did Tom tell you what his plans for the future might be?”

Tom sat up and beamed. “I know you’ll approve. I’ve decided that I want to study child psychology and child therapy. I want to work with children like Marshall and David.”

Irene and Herb swelled with pride and thankfulness that Tom was, at last, becoming a mature adult.

The next evening Anna came dancing into the room. “Attention. I heard some great news today at the school. Alex has been assigned a companion dog of his own. He will be down there in training.” Everyone was enthused.

They smiled watching Chuckles patiently allowing the two guide puppies in training to crawl over him and chew on his ears. He looked over his shoulder and made funny noises as if he were trying to talk.

“Whad he say?” David asked innocently.

“I bet he said he’s happy he has a good boy of his own named David, and he’s sure glad Tom and Tim found him.” Herb picked David up and started out of the room.

“I bet he said it’s time we were in bed and maybe those two ornery little pups will go to sleep and leave him alone.” Anna stood and stretched.

Doors were locked; windows were checked and everyone went to their rooms. The lights were off, except a night light in the upstairs hall. A black dog made soft chuckling sounds as he padded round making sure everything was all right for his family.

  The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It’s called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a meadow filled with sweet grass and wild flowers and a stream of fresh, sweet, clear water. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food, water, spring weather and companions. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who were maimed are made whole. They play all day and get along. There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person they loved on Earth and who loved them. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one of them suddenly stops and looks up expectantly. The nose twitches, the ears are up and the eyes are sparkling. This one runs from the group with joyful noises. You have been seen and when you and your pet meet, there is a loving embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet. Then you cross the bridge together into Heaven never to be separated again.

  A Very Special Welcome

This is about some of the animals who were waiting when the terrorist flew into the New York Towers, the Pentagon and attempted to crash into the White House.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, there was an unexpected amount of activity at the Rainbow Bridge. Decisions had to be made quickly. There were issues not often addressed here in the fact that many animal residents had no loving person to wait on.

Think of the puppies who lived and died in hideous puppy mills. No person on Earth had ever had the chance to love and protect them. What about those who spent many unhappy hours tied in hot, dusty yards with no water or shelter and those who were abused and neglected? There was no one for them. We don’t talk about that up here because we share loved ones arriving. We all know there is nothing like your very own person who thinks you are the most wonderful animal in the universe.

On that Tuesday morning, a request rang out for pups, who had no special person, to volunteer for an extra special assignment. An eager, curious crowd surged forward. Each one wondering what the assignment would be.

A solemn voice told them that unexpectedly, and all at once, over 5,000 loving people had been forced from Earth. The pups, as all pups do, felt the humans’ pain deep in their own hearts. Without hearing more, there was a clamoring among them as they shouted out.

MAY I HAVE ONE TO COMFORT?

I’LL TAKE TWO. I HAVE A BIG HEART AND I’VE BEEN SAVING KISSES.

One after another they came forward for an assignment. One cozy-looking, fluffy puppy hesitantly asked, “Are there any children coming? I would be very comforting for a child and I’ve always wanted a child to cuddle.”

A group of Dalmatians surged forward. “We’ll take the firemen and comfort them.” Large working breeds called out, “We’ll take the police officers and love them.”

Father Mike got a special Yorkie all his own. It was difficult to determine for whom the joy was complete. Dogs, who on Earth had never had a kind word or a pet on the head, ran forward and said, “I will love any humans.”

Then all dogs wherever on Earth they had originally come from, rushed to the Rainbow Bridge and stood waiting eagerly to share their love.

Horses, cats, birds and all kinds of animals ran to meet the humans to make them feel welcome and loved.

Of course, these Rainbow stories are just sweet stories. I do urge you to love and take care of any animal you have or meet. Spaying and neutering all pets will prevent little ones that are not wanted and will not be cared for.

Over 10,000 adoptable dogs were euthanized in this country during 2008-2009 because no one offered to give them a home. Spaying and neutering will keep this from happening. Be a responsible owner.
