"What are you doing here?" she asked him.
He looked up at her, his eyes narrowed, as if to say, "That man in our house broke your heart. You think I'm staying there with him?"
"Ha!" she laughed, hugging the cat. "Thanks, Smudge. You always know just what to say."
She felt a gentle pressure on her shoulder, but when she looked, no one was there. Millie, she realized. Haunting her old bookstore like always.
Reaching up, she put her hand over where she imagined Millie's to be. Her skin prickled there with the cold sensation of long, thin fingers twining into hers.
"Thank you, too, Millie," she said to her aunt. "It's good to know I'll always have you and Smudge."
There was no answer, of course. There didn't need to be.
