Chameleons, a Novel Based Upon Actual Events Page 30

by Marcus Nannini

It is only now that Sun realizes Reardon is holding a sword at his side, an old sword at that. She opens the door and gestures for him to enter.

“Please come in, Admiral; my husband’s in his study.”

Reardon follows her through the French doors, both of which are open and finds Ken is sitting behind his massive desk, causing him to appear even more diminutive than he is.

“Ken, this is Rear Admiral Roman Reardon.” Ken begins to rise from his chair.

“No need to get up Sir, I only need a minute of your time.”

“Thank you Admiral. At my age if I appreciate every opportunity to conserve my energy.”

Reardon laughs. “That’s a good philosophy, Captain.”

He walks to Ken’s desk and places the sword across the center, directly in front of Ken.

“Sir, I understand this belongs to you. I really couldn’t live with myself if I failed to retrieve it for you.” Reardon takes a step back from the desk.

Ken immediately recognizes the sword and his mouth drops open. Tears begin to fall down his cheeks.

“I really must be off now, Mrs. Kida so if you don’t mind I’ll show myself out.” Reardon motions in the direction of Ken. “I think the Captain might prefer you remain here.”

Neither Ken nor Sun find themselves capable of forming an answer as Reardon turns and leaves. Sun quickly moves to place her hands on the shoulders of her husband. Ken picks up the sword, but is unable to speak as he discovers he cannot repress the desire to cry.

  CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE

  NO LOOSE ENDS

The following morning Ken and Sun are enjoying a light breakfast on the rear lanai. The early morning calm is interrupted by the sound of Gary’s car pulling into the driveway at what sounds to them to be an unusually great rate of speed. They both look towards the walkway in anticipation of Gary’s appearance and in a few moments he comes running around the corner at break-neck speed, the morning newspaper in his left hand.

“Grandpa! Kapuna!” He’s slightly out of breath, more from excitement than from the run.

“Gary, are you alright my boy?” Ken’s voice, as is his custom, is low and calm.

“Haven’t you seen this morning’s paper yet?” Just then he notices the front page is spread out across the table. “MIDGET SUB LOGBOOK A HOAX! HONOLULU POLICE OPEN INVESTIGATION OVER MYSTERY BODY. $100,000 REWARD OFFERED TO FIND PERPETRATORS!”

  CHAPTER THIRTY SIX

  DR. JOHANSSON’S OFFICE

Gale enters Johansson’s office and casually walks to the sofa. She kicks off her sandals, fluffs two pillows and assumes her usual position.

Yokoyama is fourth, clockwise, from lower left corner.

Yokoyama is far left, top row.

An “I” class Japanese submarine carrying a midget submarine.

Captured I-24-tou, sister to the I-16-tou, on display at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, TX.

The U.S.S. Oklahoma after rolling over.

Note the 3 “rooster” tails and two torpedo wakes; one directed at the West Virginia and one at the Oklahoma.

Captured I-24-tou. Note the stacked torpedoes and the jagged anti-submarine net cutter.

Interior view of sister ship to I-16-tou.

Yokoyama’s likely fatal torpedo strike against the U.S.S. Oklahoma. Note the significantly taller fountain rising from the port side of the West Virginia, anchored to the left of Oklahoma which is typical of the five hundred pound aerial torpedo strikes. The torpedo hit on the Oklahoma is much denser as the one thousand pound “Long Lance” torpedo throws significantly more water into the air, but at a lesser height due to the sheer weight of the water.

Rescue efforts to save crew trapped within the overturned U.S.S. Oklahoma.

Dual propeller assembly of a Japanese midget submarine.

I-24-tou lies beached and abandoned on Oahu, December 8, 1941.

Captain of IJN Chiyoda, Kaku Harada

  Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto
