  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I’ve written and spoken about how I used to have a naive view of law enforcement. I thought of it as a romantic profession, the thin blue line between order and chaos. But that misperception was probably good, because that is what originally attracted me to the business of writing stories about this world.

Since then, I’ve learned that law enforcement is not a career that most law enforcement officers would describe as romantic!

Nevertheless, I’m still intrigued with their universe. And my law enforcement friends and acquaintances continue to impress me with their dedication and focus.

I also benefit from their interest and support of my books.

Last spring, I was asked to participate in another character name auction, this one a benefit for the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County.

The person who placed the winning bid is Retired Long Beach Police Officer Steve Ditmars. Steve has worked with dogs and currently has two of them. As you read the character I've named Steve, you can know that only the good qualities of that character share anything with the real Steve!

As with many of my previous books, I owe huge thanks to my editors. Liz Johnston, Eric Berglund, Christel Hall, and my wife Kit. Without them, I'd have to get a job at Burger King.

Huge thanks also to the map and cover designer Keith Carlson. I asked for something that communicated Noir and Pulp and Intrigue. Wow, did he deliver. I have to hold my breath every time I look at this book cover.

Thanks again to Kit. She makes the hard parts of being a writer go down easy and the easy parts fun to celebrate. She's always been my key to success with this writing stuff.
