Against my better judgment, I tried once more to coax the key from Cameron. “So where did you meet Nadine?”
He peered up from the cocktail he poured and gave me a nauseating smile. “Is that what I said her name was? I usually don’t remember them for long.”
Well, subject number one, big mistake. I struggled to think of a neutral topic. “How many more shows are scheduled on this tour?”
Cameron sauntered toward me, my requested beverage in his hand. “Six. Why?”
Determination held me in place when the compulsion to retreat screamed in my head. “No particular reason. It’s just last time the band was in town, they took a two week break.”
“Not happening this time, sugar. We have three sold out shows this weekend, and then we move on to LA.”
I took the highball he offered and sipped the pungent alcohol with a straight face. I might not enjoy the taste, but it bought me some time. “Sounds like you have a full schedule.” I calmly walked over to the bar and set down my glass, then picked up the card he’d set on the edge. “I guess I will have to make the most out of the time I have with Auro.”
I turned and strode to the door. His failure to intercede with my departure had me both relieved and confused. I grasped the knob and glanced over my shoulder at Cameron. Goosebumps rose on my arms. His face held a mixture of hate and lust. “Thanks, Cam,” I muttered as I stepped across the threshold and quickly shut the door behind me.
I gulped much needed oxygen into my lungs. The sight of Big Lou headed down the hall in my direction filled me with relief. “Where can I find a taxi to get me to the hotel?” I asked, impatient to leave before Cameron exited of the office.
He stopped and took in my flustered appearance. “You okay, Angel?”
“Of course.”
“You look a little worse for wear. Did that sniveling bastard give you a hard time?”
What an understatement. The jerk had some serious issues. I drew in a deep breath and nodded. “Yep, but nothing I couldn’t handle. Thanks for your concern, though. You’re really sweet.”
Big Lou eyed the entrance to Cameron’s workplace and then studied me. “I don’t think it is a good idea for you to be alone with him again. I have a gut feeling something ain’t right with that one.”
“I agree. I plan on steering clear of him in the future. In the meantime, where can a girl catch a cab?”
He shook his head, the disapproval clear on his face. He yanked the walkie from his belt then requested a limo be brought to the South exit. “Auro would skin me alive if I let you leave without proper escort. The car will take you anywhere you like.”
“Okay, thanks.”
Big Lou hesitated, focused on something over my shoulder and said in a softer tone, “Auro sent me, you know. He does that sometimes, gets a sense about someone. He had an uneasy feeling about where you had gone. He cares for you, Angel. You get that, right?”
I leaned forward and gave him a quick hug causing him to tense. I smiled at his sudden discomfort and kissed his cheek. “Thanks for your help, Big Lou. I appreciate it, and between me and you, I’m pretty crazy about him, too.”
He pointed to the illuminated sign at the end of the hall. “Out you go then. The chauffeur should be there waiting by now.”
I hurried outside with the card clasped tightly in my hand. I glanced at the key suspended on the beautiful chain around my neck and reaffirmed my desire to make this a night Auro would never forget.
