“Hello,” Lily said, taking the lead half a second before Ben added his own greeting.
The other woman stood up and gingerly stepped along the rocks to get back to the shore. “So you’re the other backpackers?”
Ben nodded. Lily said: “Yes.”
“I’m Kara. Nice to meet you.”
“I’m Lily. And this is Ben.”
“I didn’t think you’d be arriving yet. But welcome to Lake Ellen. My camp is over here,” she pointed behind her. “There’s another one fifty feet from my site. But I imagine you’ll be more interested in being all the way across the water from me.”
That was exactly what they would be doing. They wanted privacy. Not that fifty feet might not be enough to hide the evidence of their sex. But they wanted as much privacy as they could get.
“We’ll get set up, but maybe we can hang out over dinner,” Lily said. “If you don’t mind. We’ll see a fair amount of each other, so we might as well get to know each other.”
Kara nodded. “I’m all set up, but I can help you set up your site, if you don’t mind.”
“Of course not.”
“You know, I hadn’t expected you to be here so early.”
“What? Why not?”
“I heard you were honeymooners.” Kara winked at them.
Ben grew a shade of red, but Lily didn’t. Actually, Ben had been growing red ever since Lily mentioned that they would be seeing a fair amount of Kara—interesting choice of words—he’d just kept his embarrassment in check until Kara revealed that she was thinking about their sex life.
“Yeah. Your husband knows what I’m saying,” Kara paused to smile. It was the kind of smile that couldn’t help making you comfortable—if it didn’t make you feel dirty. “But if it makes you feel better, if you’d arrived much earlier I might have accidentally given you a show.”
They let Kara lead them around the lake, since she seemed to know the area. She’d backpacked in these mountains before, and seemed to enjoy playing the expert. They chatted about the hikes in front of them, and generally chewed the fat while getting everything set up, the excess food hidden away in a bear bucket.
It wasn’t until they were on the way back to Kara’s campsite—she insisted on them joining her, since she already had gathered wood for a fire, that they asked about her.
“Don’t you have a partner? Who should be joining us.”
“Hmm. Oh.”
Lily waited a minute for Kara to answer—she was caught up trying to find a good place to cross a stream—before prodding her. “The ranger said there would be two people.”
“Yeah. That was the plan. But Vanessa, well we…No, she broke up with me.”
Lily nodded.
But she was thinking about Kara and Vanessa. Kara’s partner, her ex, had been a woman. It had been the easiest thing to assume that Kara was dating a man. The ranger had only talked about another couple, never mentioning genders. And Ben and Lily had never asked for details. They hadn’t been the least bit interested in interacting with the other couple before. They figured if they did, they could introduce themselves. They didn’t need to hear anything second hand, through a ranger.
It was a classic mistake. Lily had made it, even though she had dated women.
Lily had to withhold a smirk. She couldn’t let on that she was imagining another woman with Kara, filling in how the scene they had witnessed might have gone, but for that breakup.
“It was a stupid break up too. We’d just fucked,” she half smiled, as if the memory was bitter but still pleasant. “She’d finished dressing when she told me she wouldn’t be coming on this trip. It took ten minutes before it was clear that she was breaking up with me completely. That was just yesterday. And I decided to go on this trip anyway. I’d appreciate some company, but I won’t take up too much of your time.”
“It’s okay.”
“Not completely. I don’t want to ruin your wedding night, or the rest of your honeymoon.”
“It’s not our wedding night. I suppose it could be, if we’d just gone to the justice of the peace. But we were married on yesterday. We had the traditional big wedding, and had a nice hotel room for our wedding night.”
“With a soft bed.”
Lily laughed. Ben wished she wouldn’t.
“Yeah. So you’re not interrupting our wedding night.”
“But you’re going to be doing things in your tent that you won’t want me around for. You are newlyweds. I understand.” Kara seemed to enjoy the idea, she wanted to think about the pair of them having their marital fun. “Look. I’ll appreciate some time with you. But anytime you want to wander away, just go ahead. I won’t take it personally.”
Kara was still ahead of them, and Lily looked at Ben, exchanging a glance as if she was considering walking back to the tent then and there, even though they’d said they were going to wait until after dinner. Even though she still felt tired.
But half the reason they were getting horny again was Kara. She was the aphrodisiac they didn’t need. They’d take more advantage of that aphrodisiac in subsequent days. For now, they wanted to know Kara, since they’d spend time with her whether they wanted to or not. They could leave for their tent after dinner.
They’d just have to steer the conversation away from sex when Kara raised it.
