Finding Fisher

“I had a little help. Some of the guys from Pete’s Repair shop stopped by to give me a hand.”
I admire the flooring. “You did a fantastic job. Now the only thing we have left to do is the window coverings.” We’ve been saving up for plantation shutters to replace the ugly, old curtains the previous owners left in the house.
“Another month, six weeks tops.”
I raise an eyebrow. “That fast?”
“I’ve been doing so much business I might have to start turning clients away. Or I’ve been thinking about the possibility of getting an assistant.” He laughs. “Can you imagine me as someone’s boss?”
“I think you’d make a great boss. You’re an amazing business person. Anyone would be lucky work with you.”
“I’m glad you think so,” he says. “Now are you ready for your next surprise?”
I take in a breath. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Good. I was waiting to get the flooring done so I could do this properly.”
I nearly faint when he gets down on one knee and removes a small velvet box from his pocket. When he flips open the box I gasp. It’s a spectacular yellow sapphire surrounded by shimmering diamonds on a lovely gold band.
“I wanted something unique. So I picked the yellow sapphire. And because you’re Buttercup, so it made sense. At least in my mind. Do you like it?”
“It’s beautiful,” I manage to get out as my throat tightens.
“I realize I’m not the ideal. I’ll probably never be a college graduate. And I’ll never be a lawyer. But I will always love you and I’ll do everything in my power to make you happy.”
“I know.” I swipe at the tears that are flowing down my cheeks.
“Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” I manage to squeak out.
He removes the ring from the box and carefully places it on my finger. “Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted you to have my ring on your finger?”
“I have an inkling.”
When he rises from the floor he takes me into his strong arms and holds me tight. And for just a moment I think about Franklin. Even though it’s been a little over a year since he died it seems like a lifetime ago that I lost him.
When I made the trip to New Jersey to find out what happened to Franklin, I never expected to find his brother, Fisher, and fall in love with him.
