“Fine,” she says with a huff. “You ruin all the fun.”
Behind her back she pulls another small box. This one looks like it’s a ring, but I don’t wear jewelry. When I open the box my mouth drops. The words on the key ring give it away. “No freaking way.”
She laughs and squeals. “Way. I totally bought you a Harley.”
I get up and lift her into my arms, spinning her around while trying to simultaneously make it to the front door. Sure enough, parked on the other side of my pickup sits a shining brand new motorcycle.
I spend the next hour checking it out. We take it for a quick spin and I check it out some more. It’s awesome. I wouldn’t have picked a better style. “I am in love.”
“With me or the bike?” She asks.
I take her back into my arms. “Please don’t make me choose right now.”
She taps me on the back. “Fine. I’ll let the bike have you for the day.”
She’s halfway up the porch steps before I stop her. “Hey, wait. What the heck was the bunny and ball for?”
“Oh yeah, that’s for the twins we’ll have one day, well maybe hopefully if that’s what you want. I mean it might not be twins.”
I chase her in the house and catch her before she can get away. I’m out of breath and I know it’s not from running. “You want to have my babies? Did you say twins?”
She nods like it’s no big deal. “Uh huh.”
“Two?”
“Yep.”
“Shit. I mean, yay, oh shit! Do I have to get rid of the Harley?”
Kimber laughs. “No. You get to have it all.”
I’m holding her, kissing her, and then it hits me. “We should probably get hitched.”
“We don’t have to.”
“I kinda want to.”
“Okay. No rush. I don’t need a ring to know you’re mine.”
“Why the watch?”
“It wasn’t from me, West. I found it in Brice’s desk drawer. She had it inscribed on the back.”
I take off the watch and look at the inscription. A quirky gift for quirky guy – Love B
I burst into laughter. It’s the funniest thing, especially coming from Brice. My brothers will laugh their asses off. “This is awesome.”
“I know. I couldn’t resist.” She leads me into the bedroom and has something behind her back. “There’s one more thing I want you to have.”
“Okay.”
Kimber hands me a leather bound book. At first I don’t get it until I open the first page. “Is this your journal?”
“It also contains every single story I ever wrote about you and Brice. I want you to have it, since you burned the letters. I thought maybe you’d want to read them.”
“Are you sure? I’m happy with this life, Kimber. I don’t need to go backwards anymore.”
“I love you, West. I also love my sister. You keep them.”
I can’t stop smiling as I look at everything I have now. Two years I was ready to give up. I couldn’t stand the thought of coming back to the island. Now I’m in love. I’m going to have a family, and I get to be with someone who really understands me.
“Am I dreaming?” I question.
“Am I?” She counters.
“If I am, don’t wake me up.”
“Okay, babe. I won’t.”
