On the heels of that, Andrew Leigh called and offered to pay for Jennifer’s medical expenses. “I’ve decided to drop the custody suit,” he said.
Tracy felt stunned by this news. “What made you decide that?”
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and then Andrew’s voice sounded full of emotion. “Jennifer herself. She didn’t like the idea of being without you.”
Tracy felt renewed tears in her throat. “I see,” she finally said when she got control of herself.
“I understand the wish to be with someone you care about,” he said. Then he cleared his throat. “I’ll expect to see her for holidays.”
“Yes, of course. She’d like that.”
She slowly lowered the phone. So much was happening so fast.
She reread Amanda’s letter as she went out to the back porch and down to the yard, breathing in the scent of the Russian olive trees along the back fence. Evidently, Amanda had resolved some situations of her own for the tone of the letter was much softer than when they had last spoken.
The letter took Tracy back to the morning of the attempted bank holdup the previous Wednesday. That seemed a lifetime ago. And Andrew Leigh was still looking for his daughter, Jennifer’s Aunt Carrie.
“Where are you, Carrie?” Tracy whispered to the wind.
Deep down, Tracy believed that Carrie would turn up soon and be all right. Deep down, she had faith in her friend.
She turned around when she heard the screen door open. Matt stood on the redwood deck, barefoot, in jeans. The sun glinted off highlights in his dark blond hair. He gave her a very satisfied grin and lifted one eyebrow as he came down the steps to the backyard.
“Come here, woman,” he said as the grass tickled his feet. “We’ve got wedding plans to make.”
