Going Solo

Megan blushed. “Maybe,” she said modestly. “We’ll have to see about that.”
“Well, what do you say we head back to the dorm?” Allegra suggested. “I know my parents plan to be there. You have to meet my brother. He’s great. And he’s heard so much about all of you that he’s dying to meet you.”
“I can just imagine what he’s heard,” Tiffany said, rolling her eyes upward.
“I’d like my mother to meet your parents, too,” Megan said to Allegra. “And to get to know you a little, too. After all, she’s heard a lot about you.”
“I just hope your mother and my father don’t embarrass us, hanging all over each other and acting like a pair of kids,’’ Tiffany said.
“Hey, what’s wrong with that?’’ Mark protested. “They’re in love, right?”
Tiffany looked at Megan, then broke out into a huge grin.
“Yes, I guess they are in love. And you’re right, there is nothing wrong with that.”
“So what are we waiting for?” said Paul, taking Megan by the hand. “Let’s go over to Ellis Hall and party. We all had quite a night tonight, and we deserve to celebrate.”
Megan nodded in agreement. “In fact, we’ve all had quite a summer.”
Allegra overheard her comment and glanced in her direction. Tiffany, too, looked over, having understood exactly what her roommate meant. For a few seconds, the three of them just looked at one another, smiling.
And then Allegra spoke, her voice hoarse with emotion. “And the best part is,” she said, reaching over and taking hold of both Tiffany’s hand and Megan’s hand, “the summer’s not over yet.”
